See the humpback whales in Kona on their annual migration to Hawaii's waters every winter. From the months of December through April, humpback whales travel to the warmer waters of the tropics to mate and raise their young. Take this unique opportunity to see them playing in the waters off of Kona by sailing with Hawaii Nautical on a morning whale watch cruise. The Makai is a 30ft agile speedy powerboat that can carry 15 passengers. This speed boat will whisk you away to the spot where you will get the wild experience seeing whales swimming gratefully and jumping powerfully.

Humpback Whale Facts

  • The species of the whale you can see in Hawaii is Humpback Whale. Adult whales are from 40-52 feet and weight up to 45t.
  • Humpback whales spend 6 - 8 weeks swim to Hawaii from Alaska, which is more than 3,000 miles.
  • According to the estimate by scientists, two-thirds of North Pacific Whales, which is more than 10,000 of them, migrate to Hawaii to seek the tropical water of Hawaii and calve and take care of baby whales annually.
  • Humpback Whales eat 900 pounds of food such as small fish, krill, and crustacean, every day. That is almost 560,000cal in a day! But while they are in Hawaii, they use their stored fat without eating anything.
  • “Kohola” is the word for whales in the Native Hawaiian language. There are many folklore and myth about whales in Hawaii and also their tooth and bones used to be used for many ritual arts.

    • This is a fast and nimble open powerboat, with plenty of sea-spray likely on trips outside the bay. Clothing that you don't mind getting wet is recommended.

What if I don’t see any whales?
  • This tour has a whale guarantee, which means if no whale makes an appearance, you will be able to come back on the tour once more (or choose other Hawaii Nautical’s tour has equal or less price, including on Oahu) for free. However, no refund will be given in the event that a whale is not spotted.
How close will we get to the whales?
  • Due to federal regulations, the boat only can get close as 100 yards. It is against the law to chase or attempt to touch humpback whales. Once in range, the captain may turn off the engine to allow the whales to approach as close as they would like.
Is there a bathroom on board the boat?
  • No, there is no bathroom on the boat. However, there are public restrooms and showers on the beach park. Also the beach is located in front of the Marriott Waikoloa Hotel, where there are bars and restaurants.
