Haleakala National Park (Maui)

What is Haleakala?
Haleakala is a 10,023-foot dormant shield volcano that forms 75% of Maui. The summit and crater are protected as Haleakala National Park. The vast crater landscape, cinder cones, native silversword plants, and above-the-clouds sunrise views draw over 1 million visitors a year. Two main park entrances: the Summit District (sunrise, hiking, biking) and the coastal Kipahulu District (waterfalls, bamboo forest). Most tour operations focus on the Summit District accessed via Highway 378.
Why Visit at Sunrise?
Sunrise at Haleakala summit is one of Maui’s most iconic experiences. Mark Twain called it “the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed.” Above the cloud layer at 10,000 feet, the sun rises through a sea of clouds with the crater’s cinder cones glowing red. Temperatures are 30-40°F at the summit even in summer, so layered clothing is essential. Sunrise viewing requires an advance reservation through Recreation.gov in addition to the park entrance fee.
Reservations Required
Sunrise viewing (3 a.m. to 7 a.m. summit access) requires a $1 advance reservation per vehicle through Recreation.gov, released 60 days in advance and often filling within minutes. Daytime visits do not require reservations. Park entrance fee is $30 per vehicle (3-day pass) or covered by the America the Beautiful pass. Tour operators handle reservations on your behalf when you book a guided sunrise tour.

Top Haleakala Activities

Sunrise Tours
Guided sunrise tours pick you up from Maui hotels around 2-3 a.m., handle the Recreation.gov reservation, drive the winding road to the summit, and provide breakfast and warm gear. Most include a stop at the Visitor Center for the actual sunrise viewing, then a stop at the Haleakala Crater overlook for the post-sunrise red glow on cinder cones. Total tour length is typically 7-8 hours including hotel pickup and drop-off.
Bike Down Haleakala
Downhill bike tours from Haleakala are a Maui classic. Tours begin at sunrise, then follow the road from 6,500 feet down to the coast, descending 26 miles through eucalyptus forest, ranchland, and protea farms. Two formats: guided (van follows you, structured speed) and self-guided (start at the same elevation, go at your own pace). Riders must be 12+ and wear all required gear. Closed-toe shoes and long sleeves recommended.
Hiking the Crater
The Sliding Sands Trail descends from the Visitor Center into the crater’s otherworldly volcanic landscape. A 2-mile out-and-back gives a great taste; the full 11-mile loop combining Sliding Sands and Halemauu Trails is one of Maui’s top day hikes. Native silversword plants bloom in summer near the trail. The descent is easy; the climb back up at 10,000 feet is strenuous due to altitude. Carry 2+ liters of water.

Booking & Tips

What to Wear
The summit of Haleakala is 30-40°F at sunrise, even in summer. Wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves. Layers help because temperatures climb 30+ degrees as the sun rises and you descend the mountain. Most guided tours provide warm jackets, but pants and closed shoes are your responsibility. The summit has restrooms but no shops, so bring water, snacks, and any medication you may need.
Altitude & Safety
At 10,000 feet, Haleakala has 30% less oxygen than sea level. Visitors with heart, lung, or pregnancy concerns should consult a doctor before going. Avoid scuba diving 24 hours before a summit visit (decompression risk). Children under 16 are restricted from downhill bike tours. The road has hairpin turns and grazing cattle; if self-driving, allow 2 hours from Kahului and never drive tired. Cell service is unreliable above the cloud line.
How to Book
Book Haleakala sunrise tours 2-4 weeks in advance during peak season (December-March, June-August). Most include hotel pickup from Kahului, Wailea, Kihei, Lahaina, and Kaanapali. Self-drive options are available if you secured a Recreation.gov reservation. HawaiiActivities.com offers instant confirmation, English customer support, and free cancellation up to 48 hours before most tours. Combine with downhill biking for a full Haleakala day.
