Makawao / Kula
Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala in central Maui is the town of Makawao, a world-famous art community and Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town. Every weekend, paniolos come to the country and compete in rodeo competitions, with spectators cheering on barrel racing and calf roping. The area is home to fascinating galleries and local artisans. Similarly, the Kula area is a rustic farmland where much of Maui's local produce is grown in the rich volcanic soil of Haleakala's slopes.
Iao Valley
Iao Valley State Park in central Maui is home to the Iao Needle, one of Maui's most recognizable landmarks standing at 1,200 feet. Traditional Hawaiian lore says that the park was the final resting place for some of the island's highest ranking chiefs. Once a sacred alter, this natural section of rock arching upwards surrounded by the vast crater of Pu'u Kukui is a sight to behold, flanked with emerald peaks and overlooking the sparkling Iao Stream.
West Maui
