Upcountry Maui, once the stomping grounds for Hawaiian cowboys or paniolo, is located at the foothills of Haleakala, and home to lavender fields, local distilleries, goat farms, and the towns of Paia, Kula, and Makawao. A drive through this idyllic area is a wonderful way to begin your journey.
As you make your way around Haleakala, look up to see how it towers over the island, and listen to stories about the fascinating history and culture surrounding this mountain that has been aptly named, The House of the Sun. You will even see the remains of Haleakala's final and ancient lava flow.
Located on one of the most southern parts of Maui, your trip to Hana Town continues with a stop at the Manawainui Lookout where you will see the Manawainui Gulch, a natural formation that was created when ocean waters carved out a deep cavernous canyon, and an area rarely seen by visitors to Maui.
Once you arrive at Wailua Falls, you will quickly see why it has been called Maui's most photographed waterfall. Tumbling over 80 feet down the side of a lush jungle wall into a crystal clear freshwater pool, this is one of the most easily accessible waterfalls on Maui for you to enjoy!
After a few hours on the road, you will have worked up quite an appetite, and what better way to have a delicious hot picnic lunch, than at a beautiful local flower farm. Once you have eaten, take the opportunity to check out some of the many handmade local crafts and gifts that are available.
You have arrived! The remote town of Hana is a great place to stretch your legs and to see how old and modern Hawaii combine into a lovely area known for its small stores, boutique hotels, and of course the calm waters of Hana Bay which make a great photo taking opportunity, and amazing views!
One of the most popular areas on Maui, advanced reservations are required to enter the park, and can be hard to come by, but you won't have to worry since they will be arranged for you! You can swim at the beach, go into freshwater caves, and even see spouting blowholes on a quick nature walk.
While most tours start from the northern most part of the Hana Highway, you'll be starting from the south, so not only will you have views of the ocean and valleys, but since you will be going against traffic, there won't be as many people or crowds too. It is the best way to drive the Road to Hana!
Not only are these waterfalls beautiful, but they are great for swimming too! The large freshwater pool and cascading waterfalls make for amazing photo opportunities, and a refreshing dip during your long day. There are restrooms also available if you need to change into and out of your wet clothes.
It is often said that there is a waterfall around almost every turn on the Road to Hana, and you will get to see most of them! Makapipi Falls, Hanawi Falls, Upper Waikani Falls, and Waikamoi Falls, they are all on the waterfall viewing menu, and each one is more beautiful and amazing than the last.
Walk amongst the colorful trunks of rainbow eucalyptus trees, and the calm serenity of Maui's bamboo forests. These beautiful plants and trees grow perfectly in Maui's temperate climate, and make for a great stop before you make your way back to your hotel and resort for the end of your tour.
