Lahaina Today

Recovery & Reopening
Lahaina is rebuilding after the August 2023 fire that affected historic downtown Front Street and surrounding areas. Some sites have reopened; others remain under restoration. Check current status before visiting. Respect ongoing recovery; many residents continue to rebuild homes and businesses.
Lahaina Harbor
Lahaina Harbor remains the departure point for many Maui boat tours: snorkel cruises to Molokini and Lanai, sunset sails, whale watching (December to April), and Lanai ferry. Harbor and surrounding marine activity continued operations through restoration. Most tours include pickup at Kaanapali too.
Banyan Tree Park
The 150-year-old Indian Banyan Tree (planted 1873) survived the 2023 fire and has been receiving conservation care. The tree was a centerpiece of historic downtown. Visitor access has been restricted during recovery; check current status. The trees recovery has become a symbol of community resilience.

Snorkel Cruises
Half-day snorkel boats depart Lahaina Harbor for Molokini Crater, Lanais Hulopoe Bay, or Honolua Bay. Tours include gear, instruction, and lunch. 4 to 5 hours. Most popular tours fill 1 to 2 weeks ahead in peak season. Whale watching combo available December through April.
Sunset Cruises

Best Time to Visit
Year-round mild weather. April to May and September to October offer fewer crowds and better airfare. Whale season December to April brings humpbacks visible from beaches and harbor. Trade winds in afternoon May to September with afternoon chop on water. Lahaina is on the dry sunny side of Maui.
Where to Stay
Kaanapali (5 minutes north) has family resorts with beach access. Kapalua (15 min north) is upscale with golf. Wailea (30 min south) is luxury resorts. Lahaina town has limited overnight options post-2023 recovery. Vacation rentals (Airbnb/VRBO) are widely available throughout West Maui.
Getting Around
Rental car recommended for exploring beyond the resort area. Lahaina is 30 miles from Kahului Airport (40 minute drive). Kaanapali shuttle and Maui Bus connect coastal hotels. Avoid Honoapiilani Highway during rush hour (8-10am, 4-6pm). Check current road conditions due to recovery work.
