  • Drive to Mauna Kea
    You can use this time to catch a bit of extra sleep. The transportation van is comfortable and should have enough space for everyone. You can also speak with your guide about what makes Mauna Kea such a unique geological feature.
  • Stop at Ellison Onizuka Visitor Information Station & Star Viewing (30 mins)
    Due to the dramatic change in elevation, your body will need a few minutes to get acclimated. At the visitor's center you can enjoy a hot drink while browsing the gift shop.
  • Travel to Summit (30 mins)
    You will need to traverse an additional 4,000 feet from the visitor's center to the summit. The ride might get a bit bumpy here, but that can also add to the excitement of the incredible sight you are about to witness.
  • Sunrise viewing at Summit (30 mins)
    Hawaii Forest & Trail 19 Some have used the word "surreal" to describe the experience of standing at the summit of Mauna Kea, but that's not quite right. The world around you there exists in a state of breathtaking clarity that is only intensified by the sun breaching the clouds around the peak in an eruption of color.
  • Breakfast Stop (45 mins)
    Before departing the mountain you will have the chance to stop for a tasty continental breakfast that includes authentic Kona coffee, a spread of fresh fruit and baked goods.

    • Guests with heart and cardiovascular issues are not permitted to participate in this activity.

    • Guests who have gone scuba diving within the last 24 hours are not permitted on this tour. The altitude at the summit of Mauna Kea is over 13,000 feet, greatly increasing the risk of decompression sickness.

How is the ride to the summit?
  • The access road leading to the summit of Mauna Kea can be bumpy, but the transportation vehicle used has four-wheel drive drive and is built for these types of excursions.
Will we be able to see any stars?
  • Weather permitting, you should be able to see the night sky from the visitor's center before the sun starts to rise. Your guide can help you identify certain stars and constellations. Please note, however, that telescopes are not provided on this tour. The highlight of this tour is the sunrise. Is there much walking or hiking on this tour?
  • No. This tour does not involve hiking and requires very little walking.
Is it cold at the summit of Mauna Kea?
  • Yes, the average temperature at the summit is around 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius), and snow is not uncommon in the winter. Please dress warmly.
Can we access any of the observatories?
  • No.The public operation hours for the observatories do not overlap with the time of the tour.
