Molokini Crater (Maui)

What is Molokini?
Molokini Crater is a partially-submerged volcanic caldera 2.5 miles off Maui’s south coast, forming a crescent-shaped islet. The crescent shelters its inner waters from waves and currents, creating one of the world’s premier snorkel sites with 100+ tropical fish species, sea turtles, and visibility often exceeding 100 feet. Designated as a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, it’s protected from fishing. Only commercial tours are permitted to enter the snorkel area.
Why Snorkel Molokini?
Molokini’s combination of clear water, abundant marine life, and protection from open ocean swells make it Maui’s top snorkel experience. The inner crescent has shallow reef areas (5-30 ft) ideal for beginners, plus a deeper outer wall for advanced divers. Common sightings: yellow tang, parrotfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish, and the rare boxfish. Sea turtles are present year round but more reliably seen at the second snorkel stop along the Maui coast.
How Tours Work
Most Molokini snorkel tours depart from Maalaea Harbor at 7-8 a.m. for a 4.5-5 hour tour: 30-min sail to Molokini, 60-90 min snorkeling inside the crescent, then a stop at a Maui coast turtle area, with lunch served on the way back. Catamarans with shaded covered seating, restrooms, and continental breakfast are standard. Some operators offer afternoon trips with smaller crowds; conditions are typically choppier in afternoon trade winds.

Molokini Tour Options

Catamaran Snorkel
Catamaran snorkel tours are the most popular Molokini format: stable rides, shaded covered seating, restrooms, breakfast, and lunch buffet. 70-100 passenger capacity allows competitive pricing. Trip duration 4.5-5 hours from Maalaea Harbor. Two main snorkel stops: Molokini inner crescent (60 min) and a Maui coast turtle area (45 min). Family-rated; minimum age usually 4-5. Ideal for first-time snorkelers and groups wanting a relaxed pace.
Small Boat & Raft
Smaller boats (12-30 passengers) and rigid-hull inflatables (rafts) offer a more intimate Molokini experience with quicker boarding, less crowded snorkel stops, and access to the back wall (advanced site, deep water). Trip duration 3-4 hours. Less amenity-heavy: BYO water and snacks on some tours. Better for adventurous snorkelers and SCUBA divers. Not recommended for pregnant women, those with back/neck issues, or kids under 8 due to bouncier ride.
SCUBA at Molokini
For certified divers, Molokini’s back wall is one of Maui’s top dive sites: vertical drops 200+ ft with abundant pelagic life including manta rays, eagle rays, and reef sharks. Inner crescent dives are easier and beginner-friendly. Most dive tours depart Maalaea or Lahaina Harbor with 2-tank dive setups. PADI Discover SCUBA Dive options exist for non-certified divers wanting to try SCUBA in protected conditions. All gear typically included.

Booking & Tips

Best Time
Morning tours (7-8 a.m. departures) almost always have the calmest water and best snorkel visibility. Afternoon trade winds frequently cancel the tour or move to a backup site (Coral Gardens, Turtle Town). Summer (May-September) gives the most reliable conditions. Winter (December-March) is whale season; many Molokini boats add humpback sightings to the itinerary at no extra cost. Tour cancellations due to weather are not uncommon; the operator typically reschedules or refunds.
What to Bring
Reef-safe sunscreen (Hawaii law), rash guard, swimsuit (worn under clothes), towel, dry change of clothes for the return, hat, sunglasses with strap, and a small dry bag for phones. Most boats provide masks, snorkels, fins, lifejackets, breakfast pastries, and lunch. Wetsuits are sometimes provided in winter. Underwater cameras (GoPro etc.) are great for capturing the marine life. Sea-sickness medication if you’re prone.
How to Book
Molokini boats sell out 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season (December-March, summer holidays). HawaiiActivities.com offers instant confirmation, free cancellation 48 hours before most tours, and English customer support based in Honolulu. Filter by boat type (large catamaran vs small boat raft), departure point (Maalaea or Kihei beach launch), and meal inclusion. Group rates apply for parties of 4+. Combine with a Maui Ocean Center stop on the same day for a full Maalaea Harbor day.
