Create your own day of adventure on the Pineapple Island! Cruise across the Au’au Channel to the island of Lanai for a day of exploring in your own 4x4 Jeep Wrangler. With only 30 out of 400 miles of road on the island being paved, this is considered by most to be the best way to experience this secluded paradise. Your very own jeep rental allows you to venture off the paved road and go down the off-road trails to discover what makes Lanai such a special place.

The Island of Lanai

One of the most secluded of the Hawaiian Islands, Lanai, is only a 45 minute boat ride from Lahaina Harbor. Home to only about 3,300 residents, the slower, easy going pace of island life is noticeable upon arrival. The island features a unique natural beauty that transitions from dreamy, lush tropical beaches to rugged up country pine forest. With Maui and Molokai to the north, Lanai is protected and typically has a drier climate than the other islands, creating a vastly different landscape.

What places on Lanai can I go to in the 4x4 Jeep Rental?

This is a self-guided tour, visit the places that you want to see. Choose your return time with ferries departing at 8:00am, 10:30am, 2:00pm, 4:30pm and 6:45pm. Be sure to check in at the harbor 30 minutes prior to your ferry departure.

  • Garden of the Gods (Keahiakawelo): 4x4 drive only 45 minutes north from Lanai City. This area of north Lanai features unique and mysterious and almost mars like landscape of rocks and boulders of all sizes. On clear days, you can see Maui, Molokai and Oahu making for some of the most overwhelmingly stunning views .
  • Polihua Beach: 4x4 drive only about an hour north of Lanai City and 15 minutes past Garden of the Gods. One of the most secluded and pristine beaches that you can visit in Hawaii. The 4x4 trail to the beach is very fun to drive and offers many exceptional views along the way. Although it is beautiful, it is highly recommended to stay out of the water here. Strong currents and deep water very close to the shore gives the illusion of tranquility where the danger of the swift currents is hidden beneath the surface.
  • Shipwreck Beach (Kaiolohia) and Petroglyph Trail: 4x4 drive only 30 minutes from Lanai City, this stretch of beach is infamous for the numerous ships that have wrecked along its shallow channel. There is even the hull of an oil tanker that beached here back in the 1940s. Just up from the Shipwreck Beach sign is the beginning of the trail leading to the site of ancient petroglyphs.
Please Note: This is not an inclusive list of 4x4 destinations on Lanai. This list is based off of customer reviews and feedback.

ProTips for Lanai 4x4 Day Trip

Although Lanai is the smallest of the inhabited islands, it is bigger than you think. If you wish to see multiple sites in one day it is recommended to book the earliest ferry to Lanai and the last return ferry of the day.

There are many places in Lanai that are a must see that do not require off-road driving, such as Hulopoe Beach, The Four Seasons Resort, Munro Trail, Lanai City, Dole Park and the Lanai Cat Sanctuary just to name a few.

Hulopoe Bay: Only a 10 minute walk from Manele Harbor! With crystal blue waters and pearl-white sand, it is easy to see why this has been named one of America’s best beaches. The bay is protected for most of the year and is one of the most incredible snorkeling destinations in Hawaii.

Puu Pehe (Sweetheart Rock) and Tidepools: A short 15 minute hike along the coast of Hulopoe Bay revals pristine tide pools before coming to the iconic natural landmark, Puu Pehe, also known as Sweetheart Rock.

We recommend visiting Hulopoe Bay at the end of your day on Lanai. It works out very well to return the jeep first and catch the shuttle to the bay and then spend time here until it is time to walk over to the harbor to check-in for the ferry ride back to Maui.

What to Expect/Know before you go.

Shuttle service from Manele Harbor to Jeep Rental Office in Lanai City is included for the driver only.

Lanai City Shuttle: 808-559-0230 - $10 per person (cash only) one way between Manele Harbor and Lanai City. Shuttles are waiting at the harbor every day at every ferry landing.

The only stores are in Lanai City and at the Harbor. It is recommended to pack food and water before setting off in the Jeep to explore Lanai. Many destinations here make for perfect private tailgate lunch spots!

Please Note: Due to the natural terrain of Lanai, heavy rain storms can cause significant flooding of the off-road trails causing them to be inaccessible. We will contact you in the event of any road closures affecting your reservation.
