Location
Waikoloa is a master-planned resort community on the Big Island Kohala coast, 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 65 miles from Hilo. The area covers 1,350 acres of beachfront, golf courses, hotels, and shopping along Anaehoomalu Bay.
Resorts & Hotels
The Hilton Waikoloa Village, Waikoloa Beach Marriott, and Westin Hapuna Beach (10 minutes north) anchor the resort area. All offer beach access, multiple pools, dining options, and shuttle service to nearby attractions and shopping centers.
Beaches
Anaehoomalu Bay (A-Bay) is the main beach, with calm protected waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Lifeguards, restrooms, and rentals are on site. Hapuna and Spencer Beach are short drives north for additional sand options.

Snorkel & Beach Tours
Anaehoomalu Bay reef offers easy shore snorkeling. Half-day boat tours leave Anaehoomalu and Kawaihae harbors for Pawai Bay and Captain Cook Monument. Tours include gear, snacks, and naturalist guides. Best visibility and calmest water are early morning before trade winds.
Golf
Two championship 18-hole courses overlook the ocean: Waikoloa Beach Course and Waikoloa Kings Course. Tee times run 6:30am to 4pm daily. Resort guests get preferred rates and tee priority. Carts and rentals are included with most stay-and-play packages.
Petroglyphs & History
Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve has over 3,000 ancient Hawaiian rock carvings dating back 800 years. The self-guided 1-mile boardwalk trail starts from the Waikoloa Kings shops parking lot. Free admission; allow 1 hour for the full trail.

Best Time to Visit
Waikoloa enjoys 360 days of sunshine annually, the driest weather pattern in Hawaii. Year-round resort activity is available. Whale watching season runs December through April. Avoid summer afternoons for surface activities due to strong trade winds.
Getting There
Kona International Airport (KOA) is 20 miles south, a 25-minute drive. Most resorts offer paid airport shuttle service. Rental cars are recommended for exploring beyond the resort area. Weekly rental rates start from about $300 during shoulder seasons.
Dining & Shopping
Kings Shops and Queens MarketPlace provide dining, retail, and a Wednesday farmers market. Roys, Tommy Bahama, and the Hilton Lagoon Grill are top dinner spots. Most resort restaurants accept walk-ins for lunch but require reservations for dinner.
