The beautiful Puna district of the Big Island features lush greenery, untouched by development, contrasted with old and new lava flows. Travel one of the most scenic roads in the state on a comfortable and safe hybrid bicycle. After your ride, you'll have time to relax in an air-conditioned van and eat lunch. Later, you'll take a short hike to the Kaimu Black Sand Beach, a unique area formed from volcanic activity. Lastly, you'll take a van ride to the current volcanic eruption, viewing the flowing lava from as close as conditions safely allow. There is nothing quite as exciting as watching the glowing molten lava! Bike through the amazing Puna District, a mix of green rainforest and black lava, to witness the fiery red glow of Madame Pele’s magnificent creation!

    Bike approximately 8.5 miles on the Red Road in Puna.

    This stunning beach is one of very few in the country whose sand is colored jet black due to volcanic activities.

Restriction(s)
    • Guests with asthma or other respiratory problems are not permitted to participate in this activity.
    • This activity is not wheelchair accessible.
    • If less than 8 participants are booked, the activity may not operate.
    • Children 12 years old and above can participate in this activity.
    • Cyclists with heart or respiratory problems are not permitted.
    • Pregnant women are not permitted to bike, however expecting mothers can come along as a van riders.
    • Children under the height of 4 ft 10 in (147 cm) will ride a tag along bicycle which attaches to the parent's bicycle.
    • Children (5 -11) must weight at least 85 lbs (39 kg) to ride their own bicycle.
    • Individual Cyclist height requirement: 4 ft 10 in (147 cm) and above (the smallest bike frame has 26 in (66 cm) wheels).
    • Children's Tag Along Bicycles (typically fit children 5 to 8 years old, maximum weight of 85 lbs (39 kg) that attaches to the parent’s Medium bike frame for persons 5 ft 7 in. (140 cm) or above. Parent’s must have the ability to ride with a tag along at the group’s pace. Children above the maximum tag along weight must have the ability to ride a 26 in (66 cm) wheel bike.

    • You are allowed to bring your own snacks, but will be required to carry everything you bring on the tour.
Requirement(s) - Others
    • Participants are required to sign a liability waiver at the time of check-in.
    • All cyclists need to have the ability to balance, steer and stop a bike (i.e. experienced cyclists only or for safety reasons inexperienced riders may be asked to ride along in the van.
    • Van Riders (Observer) require at least one cyclist in your party. All van riders must have the ability to access the historic sites at the group’s pace and enter/exit the van independently.
    • You will be required to provide a credit card at the time of check-in and you are liable for any damages to the bicycle.

Are you required to wear a helmet during this activity?
  • Yes, all riders are required to wear a helmet for their safety.
How far in advance should I book this activity?
  • We recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last minute availability is often possible, but limited.
What is the difficulty level of this activity?
  • This is a moderate bike ride, it is mostly down hill and level with two small hills.
What kind of bicycles will we be riding?
  • Bike Volcano uses Giant Sedona comfort hybrid bikes.
Will I see molten lava?
  • The active flow status is constantly changing, therefore lava viewing is unpredictable and is not guaranteed. On the Bike and Hike to Lava Tour you will be visiting the lava fields and the tour guide will search for the most recent lava flows. On the Full-Day & Half-Day Tours you will bike around the rim of the erupting crater and there is a chance of seeing active lava in the crater’s lava lake.
