All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) off-road tours are available across the Big island of Hawaii, and there are a number of different options for all ages and experience levels. Depending on your choice of tour, you can go on a traditional solo ATV rental or on a multi-passenger Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) for up to five people. Some tours will even take you to a Big Island waterfall where you can swim in the cool and refreshing Hawaiian mountain water.

• Guests are required to wear secure close-toed shoes like sneakers or hiking boots, and be sure to wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty since the trails can be quite dusty, and during the rainy season, muddy as well.
• You will want to bring a change of clothes with you since your clothing may get dusty or muddy depending on the season. Guests who are using a rental vehicle will definitely want to change since the dust and dirt could stain the vehicle's upholstery.
• ATV tours are one of the most popular activities on the Big Island, and are often sold out weeks ahead. Be sure to book in advance to secure your reservation.
• Bring a bottle of water with you since you will be out on open trails for the duration of the tour, and water is not guaranteed while out on an ATV trail.

Big Island ATV rentals and tours are mainly located in North and North East areas of the island. These areas include Hawi, Honokaa, and Hakalau. Public transportation is almost non-existent to these locations, so you will need to have a car rental or arrange for a taxi or rideshare ahead of time. Please keep in mind that if you do use a taxi or a rideshare, be sure to secure and confirm your return transportation at the same time since ATV tour areas are in locations not readily accessed by these services.

Guests staying in both the Kona and Waikoloa area will have anywhere from a 45 minute to a one hour and 30 minute car drive to their check-in location. For those of you staying in Hilo, the ATV tour locations will be 30 minutes to an hour away.

A: Depending on the tour, multi-passenger tours often allow drivers and passengers to switch during the tour.

Q: Do you need to know how to drive a car to go on an ATV tour?
A: If you want to drive an ATV, you have to be at least 16 years old, however there are UTV vehicles where you can be a passenger while your friend, family member, or a guide drives.

A: Yes, most of the ATV tours are sold out weeks in advance, and reservations are highly recommended.

A: Although there are no ATV rental or tours available in the Kona or Waikoloa area, there are a variety of Big Island ATV tours and rentals along the North and North East side of the island in Hawi, Honokaa, and Hakalau.

A: There are no ATV or off-road tours in Waipio Valley, but there are sightseeing tours that will take you down into the valley, and many that stop at the Waipio Valley Lookout .

A: All of the ATV tours are approximately equal distant to Kona, but depending on the traffic, it can take anywhere from one hour to two hours to reach your check-in location.

Q: How old do you have to be to ride an ATV in Hawaii?
A: Depending on the tour, children four years old and above can ride as passengers, and guests between 16 years and 21 years old and above can drive an ATV depending on the tour.
