Waipio Valley Tours

4.71
Waipio Valley, located in north Hamakua, is Big Island's "Valley of the Kings" and remains one Hawaii's most unique and sacred native preservation sites. As the rain falls, see its' beautiful waterfalls pouring into a network of wet-land taro farms, over roads and black sandy shores. Horses run wild here and age-old Hawaiian traditions are passed on to new generations that inhabit the valley. An experienced guide and special 4WD vehicle is necessary to make it down the very steep valley road.
Please note: Due to repairs, Waipio Valley Road will be closed indefinitely. All traffic into Waipio Valley will be restricted to residents only, and visitors will not be allowed down into the valley for any reason until further notice. You will still be able to view the valley from the Waipio Valley Lookout during this time. The best way to still see the beauty of Waipio Valley is by air or by taking a sightseeing tour to the lookout area.

Tips for visiting Waipio Valley:

• The valley lookout is accessible at anytime and parking is limited.
• All permitted tours of Waipio Valley do not operate on Sundays to give the valley a rest.
• We do not recommend driving down into the valley on your own as the access road is extremely steep and dangerous. Water that feeds the valley’s wetland farms make its way over roads and after heavy rains can be difficult to cross.
• Hiking back up from the valley is considered strenuous and should only be attempted if you are physically capable of making the trip and know where to go.
• Most of the land at Waipio valley is privately owned and public access is limited to the beach and Mulawai Trail.
• Tours at Waipio Valley are either down on the valley floor or skirting the rim. Wagon tours visit the back part of the valley which is not accessible to visitors driving on their own.

Waipio Valley (Big Island)

What is Waipio Valley?
Waipio Valley is the Big Island’s legendary “Valley of the Kings,” a 1-mile-wide, 6-mile-deep tropical valley on the Hamakua Coast. It’s steeped in Hawaiian history as the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I and was once home to thousands of Native Hawaiians. The valley floor remains largely undeveloped, with taro fields, waterfalls, and a black sand beach. The famous lookout above offers one of Hawaii’s most photographed views: emerald cliffs framing the valley’s ocean entrance.
Lookout vs Floor Access
Waipio Valley Lookout is free and open to all (drive to the end of Hwy 240 from Honokaa, large parking lot, restrooms). The descent to the valley floor is via the steepest paved road in the United States (25% grade) and is currently CLOSED to non-residents due to safety concerns. Local cultural tours running guided horseback, ATV, or van descents have been the traditional way to visit the floor; check current operator status before booking.
Cultural Significance
Waipio is considered sacred to Native Hawaiians. It was the political and spiritual heart of the Big Island in pre-contact times. Visitors are asked to be respectful: do not enter private taro fields, do not swim in the river or beach without local guidance, and do not block driveways or trespass on residential land in the valley. The lookout-only visit is the most respectful option for most travelers.

How to Visit Waipio Valley

Self-Drive to the Lookout
From Kona, drive 90 minutes north on Highway 19 to Honokaa, then take Highway 240 west to its end at the lookout (large gravel parking lot). From Hilo, the drive is 75 minutes north on Highway 19. Cell service is limited; download offline maps. The lookout itself is free, open year round, and has restrooms but no food. Plan 30-45 minutes for photos. Combine with Akaka Falls State Park or Hamakua Coast scenic drive for a half-day route.
Guided Tours from Hilo/Kona
Big Island sightseeing tours from Hilo or Kona include Waipio Valley Lookout as one stop on multi-stop itineraries (Akaka Falls, Hamakua Coast, Mauna Kea slopes, etc.). Total tour time is typically 8-10 hours; lookout time is 30-45 minutes. Some operators offer rim drives along Highway 240 for additional valley views. Check that your operator includes the actual lookout, since some tours stop earlier on the rim.
Helicopter Views
Hilo-departing helicopter tours fly over Waipio Valley as part of the “Circle Island” or “Waterfalls of the Hamakua Coast” routes. Aerial views show the full valley floor, the black sand beach, taro patches, and Hiilawe Falls (one of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii). 45-60 minute flights typically. Doors-off configurations are available on some operators for photographers. Helicopter tours are the only way most visitors will see the valley floor since road access is closed.

Booking & Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit
The Hamakua Coast is wet year round, but afternoons are typically rainier than mornings. Plan a morning lookout visit (8-11 a.m.) for the best chance at clear views and good photo light. Winter (December-February) brings the heaviest rain. Whales are visible offshore in winter (rare but possible from the lookout). Summer is greenest. Bring a light rain jacket year round. The valley’s mood-changing weather is part of the experience.
What to Bring
Comfortable walking shoes (not flip-flops, the lookout area is uneven), light rain jacket, sunscreen, water, and a wide-angle lens or smartphone for the dramatic vistas. The lookout has restrooms but no food or drink concessions. Pack a snack or plan lunch in Honokaa town (15 minutes back). Bug spray is useful in summer. If joining a guided tour, the operator typically provides snacks and water; check details at booking.
How to Book
Helicopter tours and Hamakua Coast sightseeing tours that include Waipio book up 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season. HawaiiActivities.com offers instant confirmation, free cancellation 48 hours before most tours, and English customer support. Filter by departure point (Hilo or Kona) and tour duration. Self-driving to the lookout is free, but check Highway 240 conditions before going since road work occasionally narrows the route.
