Hanalei Bay (Kauai North Shore)

What is Hanalei Bay?
Hanalei Bay is a 2-mile crescent of white sand on Kauai’s North Shore, frequently named one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Backed by 4,000-ft green mountain ridges and the Hanalei Pier (a 19th-century historic landmark), the bay offers calm summer water for swimming, kayaking, and SUP, and powerful winter surf for spectator viewing. Hanalei town has restaurants, shave ice (Wishing Well Shave Ice), and small boutiques. The bay was the setting for the 1958 musical South Pacific.
Top Activities
Summer (May-September): swim, snorkel near the pier, SUP across the calm bay, kayak to nearby beaches, surf lessons at the gentle inside breaks. Winter (December-March): surf spectating only (massive winter swells). Hanalei Pier offers fishing access, sunset photo spots, and a popular swimming jump platform (summer only). Sunset Beach Park is the prime sunset viewing area. The Hanalei Valley Lookout (1 mi south of town) gives the iconic mountain-and-taro-fields panorama from Princeville Road.
Why Visit?
Hanalei Bay is Kauai’s most photographed beach. The mountain backdrop creates dramatic photos at any time of day; sunrise and sunset are particularly stunning. The town’s small-town feel is preserved despite tourism; respect local culture and parking limits. Hanalei is the gateway for Na Pali Coast access (Kalalau Trail starts at Kee Beach, 5 mi west), making it a strategic base for North Shore exploration. Allow a half day minimum for swimming, lunch, and pier exploration.

Top Hanalei Experiences

Beach & Water Activities
Summer-only watersports at Hanalei: SUP across the bay (1.5 mi crossing), kayak rentals from Hanalei Pier, snorkel near the pier (winter conditions can be unsafe), and beginner surf lessons at the gentle inside reef. Tunnels Beach (3 mi west) offers excellent reef snorkeling May through September. The shorebreak waves at Hanalei Pier are popular for boogie boarding. Avoid all winter water activity (Nov-March); 30-40 ft surf creates deadly conditions.
Hanalei Pier
The Hanalei Pier is a 320-ft historic landmark dating to 1892. Originally a sugar plantation cargo pier, it now serves recreational fishing, sunset viewing, and a popular swim platform on the side (summer only, winter unsafe). The pier railing is a classic Hanalei photo spot. Ample free parking. Walk the pier at sunrise or sunset for the best photos. Just past the pier, the lookout above Black Pot Beach offers panoramic mountain-and-bay views.
Hanalei Town
Hanalei town’s charming small-town feel is preserved with restored 1880s storefronts. Eat at Hanalei Bread Co (breakfast), Bar Acuda (Mediterranean tapas, dinner), the Tahiti Nui Restaurant (live Hawaiian music nightly), and Wishing Well Shave Ice (rainbow shave ice). Several boutique shops sell Kauai-made goods, surf wear, and local art. Limited parking; arrive 9-11 a.m. before crowds peak. Allow 2-3 hours to explore town and the bay.

Booking & Tips

Getting There
From Lihue Airport (LIH), drive 75 min north on Highway 56 (becomes Highway 560 past Princeville) to Hanalei. From Poipu, allow 90 min via the same route. The road narrows considerably after Princeville with one-lane bridges and wildlife crossings; drive 25-30 mph. Free parking available at Hanalei Beach Park, the pier, and Hanalei town. Cell service is limited beyond Princeville; download offline maps. Last gas stations are in Princeville before the descent.
Best Time
Summer (May-September) is the calmest, sunniest season for swimming and watersports. Spring and fall are also pleasant with shoulder-season crowds. Winter (December-March) brings rain and massive North Shore surf; the bay becomes unswimmable but the spectator experience of giant waves is dramatic. Mornings are typically clearest; afternoons can bring passing showers. Whale watching from the pier is possible December through early April on clear days.
How to Book
HawaiiActivities.com offers Hanalei-area tours including SUP rentals, kayak day trips, surf lessons, and Na Pali boat departures from Hanalei Pier (summer only). Also nearby: Princeville Ranch ATV/zipline, Tunnels Beach snorkel, and Kee Beach access for the Kalalau Trail. Filter by activity type, season, and difficulty. Group rates apply for parties of 4+. Reserve 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season; same-day rentals usually possible at the pier.
