Na Pali Coast

4.74
A visit to the Na Pali Coast along the northern shore of Kauai is like a trip through time, back to an ancient era when things were incomparably larger and somehow brighter. From mist-shrouded peaks down rippling, carved cliff faces to the waves that splash through arches and sea caves along the base, the Na Pali Coast is a sight to behold. While it is possible to hike a majority of the Na Pali Coast, boat and helicopter are the most popular ways to experience this incredible natural wonder.

Na Pali Coast Adventures

What is the Na Pali Coast?
The Na Pali Coast is Kauai’s legendary 17-mile stretch of dramatic green sea cliffs rising up to 4,000 feet from the Pacific. Inaccessible by road, the coast is reachable only by boat, helicopter, or the Kalalau Trail (an 11-mile permit-required hike). Sea caves, cascading waterfalls, hidden beaches, and ancient Hawaiian valleys make it one of the most photographed coastlines in the world. The coast appears in films like Jurassic Park, King Kong, and the Descendants.
Why Adventure Tours?
Na Pali adventure tours combine sightseeing with snorkel, kayak, or zodiac raft elements. The cliffs and sea caves are best appreciated up close, where waterfalls cascade directly into the ocean. Most tours include a stop at Nualolo Reef for snorkeling among monk seals and tropical fish. Spinner dolphins and humpback whales (winter) are commonly spotted. The active adventure format suits travelers wanting more than a sit-and-watch boat cruise.
Tour Departure Points
Most adventure tours depart from Port Allen Marina or Kikiaola Harbor on the south side of Kauai (closer to Poipu hotels). North Shore departures from Hanalei Pier offer shorter sea time but are weather-dependent and only run summer (May-September). Tour duration: 4-6 hours from Port Allen, 3-4 hours from Hanalei. Hotel pickup is available from most Kauai resort areas including Poipu, Lihue, Kapaa, and Princeville.

Adventure Tour Types

Zodiac Raft Tours
Zodiac raft tours use rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) seating 16-30 passengers. The smaller size lets them enter sea caves where larger catamarans cannot go, including the famous Open Ceiling Cave and Honopu Sea Arch. Tours run 4-6 hours and include snorkel stops at Nualolo Reef. The ride is bouncy and adventurous; not recommended for pregnant women, those with back/neck issues, or kids under 8. Wear secure swimwear and prepare to get wet from spray.
Catamaran Snorkel
Catamaran tours are the family-rated alternative: more stable, larger decks with shaded covered seating, restrooms, and full breakfast and lunch service. They cannot enter sea caves but provide excellent coastline views, snorkel stops, and dolphin watching. Tour length 5-6 hours from Port Allen. Some operators offer sunset cruises along the southern part of the coast (no snorkel). Best for families, multi-generational groups, and travelers who want a more relaxed pace.
Kayak the Na Pali
Summer-only (May-September) kayak tours from Hanalei or Polihale launch at sunrise and paddle the entire 17-mile Na Pali Coast in one day. This is one of the most epic full-day adventures in Hawaii but requires excellent fitness, kayak experience, and tolerance for 8-10 hours of continuous paddling. Permits are limited; book months in advance through licensed operators. Not recommended for first-time kayakers or those with shoulder/back issues. Includes lunch on a remote beach.

Booking & Tips

Best Time to Tour
Summer (May-September) is the calmest sea state and best for adventure tours; the entire coastline is accessible. Winter (December-March) brings larger swells; sea caves may be inaccessible and snorkel conditions can be cloudier. Whale watching is best December through early April. Most tours run year round but some operators reduce winter schedules. Morning departures (7-8 a.m.) typically have the calmest water and best photo light. Late starts risk afternoon trade winds.
What to Bring
Reef-safe sunscreen (Hawaii law), rash guard, secure swimsuit, towel, dry clothes for the return, and a small dry bag for phones. Closed-toe water shoes help on rough boat surfaces. Most tours provide masks, snorkels, fins, lifejackets, breakfast pastries, and lunch. For zodiac tours, prepare for spray; bring a wind/water-resistant jacket. Sunglasses with strap. Sea sickness medication if you’re prone; the open ocean can be choppy.
How to Book
Na Pali tours sell out 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season (December-March, summer holidays). Zodiac and helicopter tours have the highest demand. HawaiiActivities.com offers instant confirmation, free cancellation 48 hours before most tours, and English customer support based in Honolulu. Filter by tour type (zodiac, catamaran, kayak), departure point, and snorkel inclusion. Tour cancellations due to weather are common in winter; the operator typically reschedules or refunds in full.
