About Byodo-In Temple

Temple Overview
Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational Buddhist temple in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, Kaneohe, Oahu. Built in 1968 as a smaller-scale replica of the 950-year-old Byodo-In in Uji, Japan. The temple commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
Architecture
The vermilion temple features traditional Japanese architecture with curved roofs, intricate carvings, and a 9-foot Lotus Buddha statue (the largest wooden Buddha outside Japan). The 3-acre grounds include koi ponds, meditation garden, and the iconic 5-ton brass bell. No nails were used in construction.
Visitor Experience
Allow 1 to 2 hours to explore. Walk past lily-filled koi ponds, ring the giant brass bell (a Hawaiian tradition for good luck), and meditate in the temples prayer hall. Free admission for kids under 2. Open daily 8:30am to 5pm; entry $5 adults, $3 children/seniors.

Visiting Byodo-In

Location & Access
47-200 Kahekili Highway, Kaneohe, HI 96744. 30-minute drive from Waikiki via Pali Highway and Kahekili Highway. Parking is free at Valley of the Temples cemetery. Closest TheBus stop: route 65 (Pali). Most tour buses include Byodo-In as part of east Oahu sightseeing tours.
Photography Tips
Best lighting is 9 to 11am or 3 to 5pm; the temples vermilion red contrasts beautifully with surrounding mountain greenery. Wide-angle lenses capture the full temple-pond reflection. The Sacred Bell (5-ton) is photogenic. Drone photography prohibited. Respect signs near sacred areas.
Cultural Significance
Byodo-In serves as both a tourist attraction and active spiritual site. Buddhist services held weekly. Visitors are welcome to meditate respectfully or attend public events. The bell-ringing tradition is said to bring good luck and remove negative energy. Maintain quiet voice in temple grounds.

Tour Options & Visit Tips

Day Tour Inclusions
Most east Oahu sightseeing tours include Byodo-In: Pearl Harbor plus East Coast (8 hours, $80 to $150 per person), Pali Lookout plus Kaneohe Sandbar combo, Polynesian Cultural Center plus Byodo-In day. Independent visit also feasible by rental car for those wanting to set their own pace.
What to Bring
Comfortable walking shoes (paved paths), camera with strap, water bottle, hat, sunscreen. Dress respectfully (covered shoulders/knees in temple). Light rain jacket (Kaneohe wetter than south Oahu). Photo ID for resort discounts. Cash for bell-ringing donation ($1 to $5 typical).
Combine With Other Sites
Pair with Kualoa Ranch (15 min north), Kaneohe Sandbar (15 min boat ride), Heeia Pier (10 min south), or Polynesian Cultural Center (45 min north). Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours at Byodo-In; combine for full east coast day. Plan around weather; Pali Highway often misty.
