Turtle Bay Resort (North Shore Oahu

About Turtle Bay Resort
Turtle Bay Resort is the only major resort on Oahu’s North Shore, located on Kuilima Point in Kahuku, about 60 miles from Honolulu Airport. The 1,300-acre property has 5 miles of beachfront, including Kuilima Cove (calm-water swimming beach) and Kawela Bay (occasional turtle sightings). On-site amenities include two championship golf courses (Palmer and Fazio), a stables for horseback riding, surf school, fitness center, and several restaurants ranging from beachfront grill to fine dining.
Why Stay at Turtle Bay?
Turtle Bay is the antidote to Waikiki: quiet, low-density, and surrounded by Oahu’s most dramatic coastline. North Shore surf breaks (Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Banzai) are 15-20 min away. Waimea Bay, Waimea Valley, and Haleiwa town are 25-30 min south. The resort’s remote location is its main appeal: dark skies, unobstructed sunsets, and direct access to a rugged stretch of coast that you simply cannot get from Waikiki.
Day Visits & Tours
Even if you’re not staying at Turtle Bay, day visits are welcome at Kuilima Cove (free public access), Lei Lei’s Bar & Grill (golf course views), and Roy’s Beach House for ocean-view dining. Horseback rides through the resort’s 1,300 acres are bookable for non-guests. Full-day North Shore tours from Waikiki often stop at Turtle Bay or pass through Kahuku for a beach photo or lunch.

Top Activities at Turtle Bay

Horseback Rides
Turtle Bay’s stables sit at the entrance to the resort and offer guided rides through the resort’s 1,300 acres. Routes pass through ironwood forests, hidden coves, and along beach trails. Walk-pace rides are open to ages 7+; private rides are available for younger kids on lead lines. Sunset rides are the most popular booking. Allow 90 min for a typical group ride. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required.
Surf Lessons & Beach
The Hans Hedemann Surf School at Turtle Bay teaches first-time surfers in the calmer water at Kuilima Cove and at small wave breaks near the resort. Group lessons run 90 min for ages 5+. Stand-up paddleboarding and kayak rentals are also available from the resort beach kiosk. The cove’s reef-protected setup makes it the most beginner-friendly surf spot on the entire North Shore. Winter brings bigger surf to the outer reef but the cove stays calm.
Golf at Turtle Bay
Turtle Bay has two championship courses: the Arnold Palmer Course (links-style ocean views, hosted Champions Tour events) and the George Fazio Course (more inland, traditional layout). Both are open to non-resort guests by reservation. Tee times include cart, range balls, and access to the clubhouse. Sunset golf packages from 3 p.m. offer reduced rates. The Palmer Course’s 17th hole, with the ocean as backdrop, is one of Hawaii’s most photographed golf shots.

Booking & Tips

Getting to Turtle Bay
From Honolulu Airport (HNL), the drive to Turtle Bay is 60-90 min depending on traffic. Rental car is by far the easiest. From Waikiki, plan 75-90 min via H-1 west, H-2 north, then Kamehameha Highway. Most North Shore tour buses pass through Turtle Bay or stop nearby. There is no Uber/Lyft service to count on for the return; book a rental car or hire a private transfer if staying overnight without a vehicle.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are the calmest seasons. Summer (May-September) is great for swimming and snorkeling at Kuilima Cove. Winter (December-March) brings massive North Shore surf to outer reefs (great for spectator viewing at Pipeline and Sunset Beach) but Kuilima Cove stays calm year round. Whale watching from the resort’s beach is possible December to early April. Sunsets are typically clear November-April.
How to Book Activities
Horseback rides, surf lessons, and golf tee times can be booked through the resort directly or via HawaiiActivities.com (instant confirmation, free cancellation 48 hours before most activities, English customer support). Reserve sunset rides and weekend golf 1-2 weeks ahead, especially in peak season (December-March, summer). Day visits to the cove and dining venues do not require reservations except for the formal restaurants.
