Pearl Harbor Tour Essentials

What do Pearl Harbor tours include?
Pearl Harbor tours from Waikiki typically combine the USS Arizona Memorial (free admission, advance reservation required) and one or more paid sites: Battleship USS Missouri (around $35), USS Bowfin Submarine (around $25), and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (around $26). Most guided tours run 5 to 7 hours including round-trip transportation. Audio narration, museum entry passes, and security-cleared bag handling are usually included. Lunch, gratuities, and souvenirs are extra.
How long is a Pearl Harbor tour?
Allow 5 to 7 hours total when departing from Waikiki. Hotel pickup runs 6:30 to 7:30 AM and the drive to Pearl Harbor takes about 30 minutes. Time at the Arizona Memorial including the introductory documentary film is 75 minutes. Add 60 to 90 minutes for each additional site (Missouri, Bowfin, or Aviation Museum). Self-drive visitors can shorten the visit to 3 to 4 hours by visiting only the free Arizona Memorial portion.
Are Pearl Harbor tickets free?
USS Arizona Memorial admission is free, but a reservation is required and books out 60 or more days ahead in summer. The other sites charge admission: Battleship USS Missouri around $35, USS Bowfin Submarine around $25, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum around $26. Combo passes covering multiple sites are sold by the National Park concessioner and by guided-tour operators from Waikiki. Active military, students, and seniors receive discounts at the paid sites.

Booking & Best Times to Visit

Should I book Pearl Harbor early?
Yes. Free Arizona Memorial reservations open 60 days ahead through Recreation.gov and the most-requested time slots (8:00 to 10:30 AM) sell out within minutes. Same-day walk-up tickets are limited and not guaranteed. Guided tours from Waikiki sell out 1 to 2 weeks ahead in summer. Book at least 30 days in advance for peak periods such as June through August and December.
Best time of day to visit
Arrive at the visitor center between 7:00 and 8:30 AM for the lightest crowds, the coolest weather, and the best chance at standby Arizona Memorial tickets. Afternoon tours run hotter and the boat ride to the memorial can be choppier. Evening visits are not possible (the visitor center closes at 5:00 PM). Avoid Sundays and federal holidays for shorter wait times overall.

Pearl Harbor Memorials & Sites

USS Arizona Memorial
The USS Arizona Memorial sits above the sunken battleship that lost 1,177 sailors and Marines on December 7, 1941. Visitors begin with a 23-minute documentary at the visitor center, then take a Navy-operated boat to the memorial platform for a 15-minute viewing. Reservations are required and free; an early-morning slot is recommended. The names of all who died are inscribed on the marble Shrine Room wall.
Battleship USS Missouri (Mighty Mo)
USS Missouri is the 887-foot battleship where Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945, ending World War II. Self-guided audio tours cover the surrender deck, mess decks, captain's quarters, and the 16-inch gun turrets. Allow 90 minutes minimum. Located on Ford Island and included in many combo tickets with the Aviation Museum. Veterans and active-duty military receive discounted admission.
USS Bowfin Submarine
USS Bowfin (the Pearl Harbor Avenger) is a Balao-class submarine launched exactly one year after the December 7 attack. Self-guided tours go through the cramped torpedo rooms, control room, sleeping quarters, and engine room. The adjacent Pacific Submarine Museum displays Japanese kaiten suicide subs and Pacific theater artifacts. Allow 60 minutes. Located near the visitor center.

Museums & Visitor Information

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum
The Aviation Museum sits on Ford Island in two restored World War II hangars that still show bullet damage from the December 7 attack. Exhibits include a Japanese Zero recovered from Niihau, a B-25 Mitchell, an F-14 Tomcat, and a flight simulator open to visitors. Hangar 79 bullet-pocked windows are a popular photo subject. Allow 90 minutes; combo passes with USS Missouri are common.
Visitor Center & Park Overview
The Pearl Harbor National Memorial visitor center is the free entry point and gathering place for all sites. It includes two museums (Road to War, Attack), a bookstore, a film theater, and the Remembrance Circle memorial. Bag policy: no purses, backpacks, or camera bags allowed inside the parks. A bag storage facility on site charges around $8 per item. The visitor center opens at 7:00 AM daily.

Logistics & Visitor Tips

Transport from Waikiki
Pearl Harbor is about 30 minutes (8 miles) from Waikiki in normal traffic. Options: TheBus route 20 ($3 one-way, 90-minute trip), guided tour shuttle (included with most booking packages), private car, or rental car (paid lot, around $7). Shuttle pickup from major Waikiki hotels runs 6:30 to 7:30 AM. Returning to Waikiki by 1:00 to 2:00 PM is typical for full-day tours.
Security & what to bring
No bags, purses, backpacks, camera bags, or fanny packs are allowed inside the visitor center or memorials due to active military base security. Acceptable items: wallet, phone, water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen. A bag storage building near the entrance accepts bags for around $8 each. Wear closed-toe shoes; the Missouri and Bowfin involve narrow stairs and metal ladders.
Accessibility
The visitor center, theaters, and the Arizona Memorial platform are wheelchair accessible, with ramps and an accessible boat. The Battleship Missouri offers an elevator to the surrender deck and lower mess decks. The Bowfin Submarine interior is not wheelchair accessible due to narrow ladders and bulkheads, though the exterior dock and the museum are. Service animals are welcome at all sites.
