History
The area known today as Kualoa Ranch consists of Kaʻaʻawa Valley and Hakipuʻu Valley, and was one of the most sacred areas on Oahu to ancient Hawaiians between the 13th and 18th century. This area was reserved for royalty to teach their children about tradition and how to govern the land.

Kualoa Ranch was established in 1850 when an American doctor, Gerrit Parmele Judd, bought part of the land from King Kamehameha III. Judd's family had purchased additional land later and total area is brought up roughly 4,000 acres today. They built a sugar mill and started a sugar plantation business in 1863 at the ranch, but faced the occurrence of drought for several years and decided to close the sugar farming business in 1870. You can still see the ruins of the old sugar mill, few walls and a coral brick stacking, along Kamehameha Highway.

While ranching business began in Kualoa in 1900s, during World War Ⅱ the land was occupied by the U.S. military and became Kualoa Airfield in 1941. After the war, the Judd family got the ranch back and in 1974, the entire area was registered in Oahu’s Historic Places listing.
