Hanauma Bay Snorkel Essentials

What to expect at Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area on the southeast tip of Oahu, about 10 miles east of Waikiki. The volcanic crescent bay is one of Hawaii most popular snorkeling sites, with a calm shallow inner reef teeming with reef fish, sea turtles, and occasionally Hawaiian monk seals. The bay is closed Monday and Tuesday for ecosystem rest. Reservations are required and limited daily; sites sell out 2 to 3 days in advance.
How long is a Hanauma Bay visit?
Plan 4 to 5 hours total from Waikiki. The drive is 30 to 45 minutes each way. The required orientation video is 9 minutes. Snorkeling time is typically 2 to 3 hours, depending on energy and water comfort. Add 30 minutes for descending and ascending the steep walkway from the parking lot to the beach. Most guided tours from Waikiki run 4 to 5 hours total including pickup, transit, snorkeling, and return.
Hanauma Bay snorkel pricing
Park entry fee is $25 per non-resident adult (children under 13 free; Hawaii residents free with ID). Snorkel gear rental on-site runs $20 for mask, snorkel, and fins. Locker rental is $10. Round-trip Waikiki shuttle is $30 to $40. Guided snorkel tours with gear and transport included run $90 to $130 per person. Self-drive plus on-site rentals saves money but requires reserving entry slots online via pros1.honolulu.gov.

Reservations & Park Access

Hanauma Bay reservation system
Reservations are required for non-residents. Online booking opens 48 hours in advance at pros1.honolulu.gov/hanaumabaystateparkmonument. Daily slots sell out within minutes once released. Walk-up entry is limited to whatever residue capacity exists on the day; not guaranteed. Guided tours from Waikiki typically include the entry reservation as part of the package. Hawaii residents enter free with state ID and do not need a reservation.
Hours and closed days
Hanauma Bay is open Wednesday through Sunday, 6:45 AM to 4:00 PM. The park is CLOSED every Monday and Tuesday for ecosystem rest. Last entry is 1:30 PM. The orientation theater closes at 2:30 PM. Restoration days (typically 2 per quarter) close the park entirely; check the official site before travel. Federal holidays generally do not affect operating hours, except Christmas Day and New Year Day when the park is closed.
Required orientation video
All first-time visitors and visitors who have not been within 365 days must watch a 9-minute orientation video before entering the bay. The video covers reef-safe practices, marine life protection, and water safety. The theater seats around 100; expect a 10 to 20-minute wait during peak hours. Returning visitors with proof of viewing within the last year (digital pass) skip the video and proceed directly to the bay.

Marine Life & Snorkeling

Marine life you will see
Hanauma Bay hosts over 400 species of fish. Common sightings include yellow tang, parrotfish, butterflyfish, Moorish idol, raccoon butterflyfish, and the Hawaii state fish (humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa). Green sea turtles are frequent visitors in the morning. Hawaiian monk seals occasionally rest on the beach (do not approach). Octopus and reef sharks (small, harmless) are spotted by patient snorkelers. Coral coverage is largely live cauliflower and lobe coral.
Snorkel skill levels
Beginners stay in the inner reef (waist-deep, calm, sandy bottom near the beach). Intermediates explore the back reef (4 to 8 feet deep) where larger fish congregate. Advanced snorkelers and free-divers head to the keyhole near the outer reef for the most marine life, but currents can be strong; flotation devices are recommended for non-confident swimmers. Lifeguards are stationed throughout the bay during open hours.
Best time of day
Arrive at the 6:45 AM opening for the calmest water, the most marine life activity, and the smallest crowds. Mornings show the best visibility (60+ feet); afternoons can become cloudy from sand stirred up by swimmers. Sea turtles are most active at sunrise and 30 minutes before close. Fewer crowds occur Wednesday and Thursday; Friday through Sunday are the busiest.

Logistics, Rules & Tips

Transport from Waikiki
Waikiki to Hanauma Bay is 30 to 45 minutes by car. Options: round-trip shuttle ($30-40, included with most tours), TheBus route 22 ($3 one-way, 60-minute trip but limited weekday service), rideshare ($30-40 each way), or rental car (paid lot at the park, $3 per vehicle, fills by 8 AM). Tour shuttle pickup runs 6:30 to 7:00 AM from Waikiki for the morning slot. Self-drive arrival before 7:30 AM gives the best parking and the calmest water.
What to bring
Reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory; non-mineral sunscreens are banned in Hawaii). Mask, snorkel, and fins (or rent on-site for $20). Towel, swimsuit, change of clothes for return. Water and light snacks (a snack bar operates near the beach). Underwater camera or GoPro (no drones). Cash for the $25 entry, $20 gear rental, $10 locker, and shuttle tip. Closed-toe water shoes help on the rocky paths and reef edges.
Park rules & conservation
Hanauma Bay is a Marine Life Conservation District. Strict rules: do not touch fish, turtles, or coral. Stand only on sandy bottom, never on coral. Reef-safe sunscreen only (mineral-based zinc oxide / titanium dioxide). No food, drinks, or smoking on the beach (snack bar area only). No flotation devices that block lifeguard views. Pets prohibited. Drone use prohibited. Violators face fines up to $1,000. Conservation revenue funds the bay restoration program.
