No. Whales

Saw no whales this day but all not lost. We encountered a pod of dolphins on the way back to the dock. They played with us for awhile circling the boat and darting away. That made up for the lack of whales!

Aulani Disney Resort & Ko Olina

About Aulani Resort
Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, sits on Oahu’s sunny west coast in Ko Olina (Kapolei). Opened in 2011, it’s Disney’s only standalone resort in Hawaii. The 21-acre property features a private lagoon (Aulani Lagoon), a multi-level pool complex with a lazy river and waterslides, Aunty’s Beach House (kids club), the Painted Sky Cantina by the pool, and themed restaurants like Ama Ama oceanfront dining. Cultural programming led by Native Hawaiian advisers shapes the entire resort experience.
Why Choose Aulani?
Aulani delivers a Disney-quality family resort experience without leaving Hawaii. Children meet Mickey and Minnie in aloha attire, character breakfasts run daily, and Aunty’s Beach House provides full-day supervised programming for ages 3-12. The Ko Olina lagoon system gives 4 calm-water swim spots that are perfect for toddlers. The west side has 320+ sunny days per year, more than Waikiki. Aulani guests get priority booking on excursions like the Aulani-Pearl Harbor tour.
Day Visits & Tours
Aulani is technically open to day visitors with a reservation, but the lagoon and pools are limited to overnight guests. Day visitors can dine at Ama Ama or Makahiki, browse the Paʻūahi gift shop, and walk the public lagoon paths in Ko Olina. Many Oahu west-side tours include lunch at Aulani as a highlight. Disney character meet-and-greet appearances follow Aulani’s schedule and are not bookable for outside visitors.

Aulani Tours & Activities

Aulani-Pearl Harbor Tour
The Aulani-Pearl Harbor tour is a Disney-curated half-day or full-day excursion to Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The tour bus picks up at Aulani, transports guests to the USS Arizona Memorial, and includes the audio tour and the Pacific Aviation Museum. Total time 6-7 hours. Open to Aulani guests only; book through the resort concierge or the in-room hotel system. Combine with Battleship Missouri or USS Bowfin Submarine Museum for a longer day.
Ko Olina Lagoons & Snorkel
Aulani fronts Ko Olina Lagoon 1 (Kohola Lagoon), one of four man-made lagoons in the Ko Olina resort area. Calm water inside the breakwater is excellent for kids and beginner snorkelers. Tropical fish congregate near the lagoon’s outer rocks. The other three lagoons (open to public) are within walking distance and offer the same calm conditions. Bring a snorkel mask or rent at Aulani’s beach kiosk. Sunset on Lagoon 1 is the resort’s signature evening view.
West Side Tours from Aulani
From Aulani, west Oahu tours include dolphin and turtle catamaran cruises (departing from Waianae and Kewalo Basin), the Wet n Wild waterpark in Kapolei (5 min by car), Polynesian Cultural Center day trip (90+ min drive each way, long day), and Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Aulani’s concierge can arrange most through resort partners. Hawaii’s Plantation Village and the Hawaii Plantation Village provide cultural context to west side history.

Booking & Tips

Getting to Aulani
Aulani is on Oahu’s west side in Ko Olina, about 17 miles west of Honolulu Airport (HNL). Drive time is 30-45 min depending on traffic; avoid 3-6 p.m. westbound when commute traffic peaks. Aulani offers airport shuttle service for an additional fee. From Waikiki, plan 45-60 min by car. Aulani is not bus-accessible from Waikiki without significant transfers. Most guests rent a car for trips outside the resort.
Best Time & Season
Aulani is busy year round but peak demand is December 23-January 5, spring break weeks, and summer (June-August). The west side has the best weather year round (sunniest, driest), so off-peak shoulder seasons (April-May, September-November) are ideal. Whale watching from the lagoon is possible December-March. Cancellation policies for Disney resorts vary; Aulani requires 5+ days for full refund.
How to Book Activities
Aulani-direct activities (kids club, character meet-and-greets, Aulani-Pearl Harbor) are bookable through the Disney Aulani concierge or app. External tours, dolphin cruises, and snorkel boats can be booked through HawaiiActivities.com with instant confirmation, free cancellation 48 hours before most tours, and English customer support. Reserve Pearl Harbor visits 1-2 weeks ahead since timed-entry slots fill quickly.
