Big Island
Best meal we had on the island, & the entertainment was really well done. This was our first trip to the Big Island for our 20th anniversary, so we were trying to pack in a wide variety of activities. A Luau was almost a must on the list of things to do. We were not sure what to expect, but the experience was one we wouldn't have wanted to miss. Very well done by everyone involved. Mahalo!
About 15 minutes by boat, two staff members held lights and illuminated from below, attracting a manta ray that approached us. Before the tour, we were warned not to touch the manta rays, but even though I didn't reach out, the manta came close and spun around, brushing against my body. Eventually, four manta rays gathered, and it was truly moving. I felt like I was able to see them up close more than when diving.
At first, I was watching from the surface, but when I got the signal that it was okay to dive, I was able to see them from below as well. Other travelers from Spain and Australia participated, and everyone was shouting "Wow! Wow!" continuously. I would love to visit the Big Island again just to participate in this tour.
It was a trip from January 19 to 26, 2009, for a couple aged 119. This was our fourth time in Hawaii, but it was our first time on the Big Island. I wanted to go to Kota Kinabalu, but this time we completely followed my wife's wishes to go via the Big Island to Oahu, which included her desire to participate in stargazing at Mauna Kea and whale watching off the coast of Honolulu. I wasn't particularly interested in stargazing, but I went along with my wife's plans this time. Since we were going from a tropical climate to the summit of Mauna Kea at 4,200 meters with sub-zero temperatures, we needed to prepare as if we were going on a winter trip to Hokkaido. However, seeing the sunset at the summit and then the starry sky after it got completely dark was truly amazing! It felt like someone had opened countless pinholes in the sky and was shining lights from outside. I saw the Milky Way clearly for the first time in my life. Using a large telescope for pinpoint observations and the staff's easy-to-understand explanations made me feel like a temporary astronomy expert. You really realize that Earth is part of the universe. While warm clothing is provided, some preparation on your part is also necessary, so I had more luggage than on previous trips to Hawaii, but it was definitely worth it. Next time, I plan to go around June to immerse myself in a different summer night sky.
excellent tour for first time travellers to big island.our pilot bob was excellent.
Great experience, the staff was awesome and very informative. The spots we stopped by were awesome and the view of the marine life was beautiful.
Awesome experience, you really feel like you are at the top of the world. Beautiful view and spectacular sunset.
So if I'd explain this experience to someone, I'd say that it was like meeting with E.T. underwater. It's just very unique and almost spiritual experience to see them underwater at NIGHT. If you are comfortable in the water, do this tour. You won't regret it.
We had a super time and saw plenty of whales. Excellent crew, very informative and friendly!
There was quite a bit of wind since we arrived on the Big Island. On the day of the tour, there were strong winds as well. The weather was wonderful, with clear skies and we could see the full view of Mauna Loa, but we couldn't reach the summit due to the strong winds! While watching the sunset and feeling a bit envious of the snowy summit visible in front of us, I resolved to come back for the amazing sunset! The starry sky is the second best after the Himalayas. The reason it's second is because the car lights interrupted the view. But thanks to the car, it’s easy to come back, so maybe it’s the best after all! They provided us with warm clothing, which was more comprehensive than other tours. At the Onizuka Center, it was about 10°C, but it felt quite cold due to the wind, so having a hat, gloves, and scarf is essential for warmth. To enjoy the starry sky for a long time, warm clothing is a must!
Although we couldn't reach the summit, I was very satisfied! I was also a bit happy to receive a refund of 15 for not being able to go to the summit! I will definitely go again!
I love the sky.
Whether it's a clear day with not a single cloud or a sky filled with fluffy clouds,
when the sunset shines through, an indescribable moment begins.
Who would have imagined on the tropical island of Hawaii that we could see snow? (There were even people snowboarding.)
It wasn't a perfectly clear day, but that's why we were able to see the sea of clouds, together with you.
I think there's something here that makes me want to visit again and again. I want to encounter a different scenery.
But I would prefer to see it again with you.

This is my second time coming to the Big Island. Last September, I was completely captivated by Hawaii, and now I'm back just three months later. This time, I’m determined to challenge Mauna Kea, which I couldn't visit on a day trip before! So, I arranged it for the second day of my arrival on December 15.
Since we left at noon, I was glad to have a leisurely morning. I was worried because there were many clouds, but mountain weather can change quickly, so I prayed for good conditions at the summit as we set off.
Our guide, who spoke in Kansai dialect, instantly transported me back to Japan with his lively chatter. The road was bumpy, especially on Saddle Road, which you can't reach by rental car.
We took a couple of breaks along the way, and as the temperature gradually dropped, I layered my clothes to acclimate to the increasing altitude. At the Onizuka Center, the traditional Japanese bento was quite delicious, and the miso soup warmed me up nicely. I also got to see the silversword plant.
We climbed through the clouds we could see from the ground and finally arrived at the summit, where various observatories from different countries are located. I borrowed some warm clothing. The temperature that day was around 1 degree Celsius. There was no wind, so it felt relatively warm for this time of year. However, if you go in with a Hawaiian mindset, it’s still quite cold. Surprisingly, I managed better than I expected, but I didn’t know about the gloves and missed the chance to borrow them, so my hands were freezing!
Just before sunset, I was able to witness a beautiful sunset as the sea of clouds below gradually turned orange. After the sunset, it changed to a rosy hue, and as it got darker, we descended a bit to the stargazing point. The starry sky was pitch black, and the temperature felt even colder. Perhaps due to the high altitude, my footing felt a bit unsteady, and my thinking was slowing down. There were a few clouds, but from the spots where the clouds cleared, we were carefully shown the constellations. I couldn’t remember half of what I saw with the laser pointer and telescope, but I was moved by the Andromeda Galaxy. The clouds gradually cleared, and at one point, I even saw the Milky Way.
After that, we just headed back. As we got closer to the ground, it started to warm up, and by the time we reached Kailua-Kona, it was hot. I really felt how amazing the Big Island is. I conquered the highest elevation of 4,205 meters (and did it easily by van), and in Japan...
We participated as a family.
Since it was held at the hotel where we stayed, it was very convenient to gather and return to our rooms afterward.
Before the meal, there were various interactive events (like making fish out of leaves and watching coconut cracking), which were fun.
We also enjoyed a variety of dances, including hula, Tahitian dance, and fire dance, which was great.
The meal was a buffet, but at first, each table went to get food, so it proceeded smoothly even with a large number of people.
I’m glad everyone in the family was satisfied. Thank you very much.
It was an English tour, so I was a bit nervous, but it was really fun. Of course, everyone else was a foreigner except for the three of us. There were times when we couldn't communicate at all in Japanese, but maybe because I said, "I'm not good at English!" at the beginning, the people around us seemed to be considerate. Unlike a tour with only Japanese people, it was full of excitement!! I really enjoyed it. My grandparents, who have weak hearts, opted out and were switched to a tour on a large cruise ship. The speed of the boat was incredible, and my speed-loving daughter seemed very satisfied. Next time, I will study a bit more English before participating.
Food was very good and it was helpful that they explained all the items on the buffet for those not familiar with Luau fare. The show was very well done and we had fun doing the activities at the beginning. Only downside is they do all the activities at the same time (hula lesson, palm weaving, etc.) so you can only do one. Also, if you're expecting a flower lei be prepared to pay extra for it or bring your own. We got ours at Costco, they sell a 2 pack of fresh orchid leis for only $6.50. Overall, a very fun evening right on the beach.
Food and show was good. But, we would like to have some more interaction with audiences to perform Luau dance. We were expecting atleast that during the course of performances. Though it was done as brief introductory on Luau dance before the show began but it would be nice if we could participate as family then it would be very very more vibrant live show where family, friends, kids everybody can enjoy and have fun. This is a small request if they can spend some time during their main course of performance on this.
Other than that food, drinks are delicious. Here is a small request if they can put name tag in front of the each of the dish / item so people who are verigiterian / non-vegiterian can pickup their food selection very easily and can avoid un-necessary waist on the food. Though the organizer anounced the all the food items but by putting a name tag for food items that are served on that day would not cost any more.
Thanks
Ten years ago, I was moved by the starry sky I saw from the top of Mount Fuji and shed tears at the sunrise. This time, when I finally had the chance to go to the Big Island of Hawaii, I wanted to see the stars from Mauna Kea. I searched online and decided on Masashi Nature School. The testimonials were the deciding factor.
"Yamachan" is the best!!
I happened to be with someone who was on their fourth tour with this group, and they are a huge fan of "Yamachan." The guidance during the car ride was excellent, and the explanations during the stargazing were very easy to understand. The weather was perfectly clear and windless... (self-proclaimed: sunny woman).
The contrast until it became pitch black was worth seeing. I felt the universe and returned home with renewed energy.
On the day of the tour, it was unfortunately cloudy, and I was really worried about whether we would be able to see the sunset and stars. However, at the mountaintop above the clouds, I witnessed a breathtaking sunset like nothing I had ever seen before. The view of the sun sinking into the clouds was beyond words in terms of emotion. The stars were not very visible due to the clouds and moonlight, which were less than 10% clear, but I was thrilled to see Venus, Jupiter, and even an artificial satellite. When viewed through a telescope, I could clearly see Jupiter's moons.
The journey was enjoyable thanks to our guide, Minosan's, skillful talk. Additionally, the bento I had at the Omiduka Visitor Center was surprisingly delicious. If you visit the Big Island, I highly recommend this experience.
We just came back from our honeymoon in the Big Island. We took this whale watch trip, and I must say this was by far the most enjoyable sailing trip we did in Hawaii. Being Discovery Channel lovers, we were so excited to see the real whales in front of us! We can't wait to go back there someday. Five stars!
This is a must do! The staff makes this a very easy and enjoyable trip. You never feel lost or worried you will miss anything. They are first class and the feelings and memories will last a life time after seeing the begining of WWII and the end.
I am so amazed each time I have gone on this tour! It was my sixth time and I will go again next year. This is not something you will want to miss!
This was my second time to go to the Island Breeze Luau. We really enjoyed the staff, food, and the show! This is really a special show. The cast really seems to enjoy the songs and dance. A smile says a lot and they smile a lot! Don't miss it. If you have not seen a Island show make this one the one you go to see!
The staff who accompanied us provided detailed and interesting explanations about the scenery visible from the bus on the way to the summit of Mauna Kea, as well as information about the observatories from various countries and the origins of the constellations in the sky, which kept us entertained throughout the journey.
Regarding the service, they made stops at great photo spots and prepared telescopes for stargazing, ensuring everything was set up for easy viewing, which was very satisfying. We were provided with winter clothing, but it was still quite cold, so I recommend dressing warmly to fully enjoy the experience.
I participated on September 24, 2008.
Since my father is elderly (76), I was worried and did some research, but I heard that there are surprisingly many elderly people who also participate, so I decided to join.
The guide, Shinya, was a really nice person who provided fun explanations while making us laugh.
Thanks to the knowledge I gained about avoiding altitude sickness, I, who am prone to it, was completely fine.
The colors of the sky during sunset are completely different from what you see on the ground! It was truly beautiful and moving.
Then we went on a star tour. I was amazed at how many stars and satellites you can see! They explained the constellations using a laser. I thought I might have enjoyed it even more if I had studied a bit about the constellations beforehand.
It gets very cold, so they lend you warm clothing. That’s usually enough, but since I get cold easily, I wore Heattech, socks, and gloves, and made some preparations. I also brought a hot pack for extra comfort.
I recommend booking a time when you can see your own constellation! It’s truly moving.
I’m thinking I want to go again!!!
Unfortunately, we couldn't see the sunset due to the weather, but we were able to see the Subaru Telescope through the gaps in the clouds. The starry sky was incredibly beautiful! Above us was a world like a planetarium. I was moved to be able to see the Milky Way!!!
Thought I booked a cruise snorkel excursion because we were new to snorkeling. What a GREAT mistake - we now know we CAN kayak AND snorkel!!!! Great Experience...
The reef wasn't as colorful or with the variety of fish that I expected, but the tour was awesome and did a great job making the guests comfortable.
Since it was November, the temperature was low and the water was cold, but the sea was beautiful and I enjoyed seeing many fish. Both breakfast and lunch were moderately delicious and satisfying. However, since almost no one speaks Japanese, it might be more enjoyable if you can speak English. I didn't encounter any dolphins, and there was no explanation provided, so I was just sitting on the boat without much to do. Next time, I want to go during a warmer season.
This was my 4th return to see a part of our nation's history that truly changed the world. Each time I go back I learn many new facts and find it difficult to hold back my emotions of the lives lost and still remain there forever.
If you are going to be in Hawaii take a day and forever take a part of December 7, 1941 with you.
This tour is my favorite. The staff is first class and they know how to avoid the long waiting in lines.
Thanks to all of those brave men and woman that will forever be remembered!
What a fun time for everyone! The ability to learn more of the Island Traditions as well as birthday's, anniversaries, just married, or a salute to those in the armed forces it is something the whole family will enjoy.
If you leave hungry it will be your own fault!
The tour to the summit of Mauna Kea was a battle against the cold, sleepiness, and feeling unwell. However, the views above the clouds, the sunset over the clouds, and the Subaru Telescope, which Japan takes pride in, are all worth seeing. My son, who is 12 years old, participated, but it seems that children have weaker vestibular systems, and he struggled quite a bit at the summit. I hope he can join again when he's a bit older. The starry sky was incredibly beautiful, and every time I go to the Big Island, I'm reminded of how much light there is in the sky back in Japan.
I was looking for a snorkeling cruise with transportation and signed up for this tour (the transportation was provided by Jacks Hawaii). The afternoon cruise I participated in had few participants, so we were able to relax on the boat, and the crew was very kind in taking care of the mothers who were scared while swimming. The crew spotted dolphins on our way back to the bay and stopped the boat for us, but we couldn't see them very well. However, the sea was beautiful, and we were able to see colorful fish, which made everyone happy. The boat's facilities were also clean and comfortable to use, which was great!
