I was picked up at my hotel around 2:00 PM and was able to see the sunset and the starry sky. I was worried about the weather since it was raining in Kona in the morning, but the summit was clear with no clouds, and the view was very beautiful. We stopped at several observatories along the way, and I was able to take a lot of photos. I appreciated that our Japanese guide, SHOYO, came along and provided support in Japanese at times. I highly recommend this tour!

Kona Manta Ray Night Snorkel Tour - Small-Group Adventure from Keauhou Bay

If you'e going to Kona, you HAVE to night snorkel with the manta rays! It was such a magical experience that felt once in a lifetime. Initially, I was scared to get into the ocean at night, but once you're in the water, the wonder and amazement settled my fears.

This tour is a particularly good one to choose because the boat ride to "Manta Village" is only about 5 minutes from the dock. There are other tours where you leave from a different dock and the boat ride is 45 minutes. For someone that gets seasick, choosing this tour over others is a no brainer.

Be aware that they may change your tour time. During my visit, they were offering tours at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm. We booked the 7pm tour. On the day of tour, they called us at about 1pm and told us the 7pm tour was being cancelled because there weren't enough people signed up. They asked us to join the 6pm tour. They did the same with the 8pm group. Luckily, it worked with our schedule and wasn't a big deal, but it's something to be aware of.

This tour was one of my favorite things we did while on the Big Island! Initially, the plan was to just go to the Waipi'o Valley lookout. I am so glad we ended up deciding to take the tour. You're taken down into the valley (on an extremely steep road) in a 10ish seater van. I get really carsick and had no issues during the tour. Our wonderful guide, Forrest, informed us of the history of the valley and it's people. He was extremely informative and clearly cares so much about the valley and it's history. The views inside the valley were stunning! Do yourself a favor and book this tour.

I traveled to Hawaii using a cruise and participated in this tour. Since I was picked up from a hotel near the port, I didn't have to worry about finding the meeting place. Fortunately, there were many Japanese participants, so I was able to receive guidance in Japanese. We took about 45 minutes to acclimatize to the altitude, allowing us to enjoy our time at the summit without stress. I'm grateful to the two guides.

It was a completely different experience from what I've had on Oahu before. I was moved by the sea of clouds and the sunset from the mountaintop that I saw for the first time. I highly recommend seeing and experiencing it for yourself.

The explanation of the starry sky with a pointer was as clear as a planetarium. Fortunately, our guide had Japanese roots and was able to explain everything in Japanese. The lecture on altitude sickness was especially helpful.

It was a wonderful tour, filled with friendly interactions among the other members. Mahalo!

It was the best experience.
The tour was conducted entirely in English, but our guide James also mixed in some Japanese for casual conversation and explanations.
The tour started with a pickup at the Target parking lot at 1 PM, and from there, we headed to the Mauna Kea Onizuka Visitor Center in about 2 to 3 hours. After a restroom break, we finally made our way to the summit. Along the way, we stopped at the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) for some photo opportunities. We arrived at the summit before 6 PM, took some time to explore, and waited for the sunset around 6:30 PM. The view above the sea of clouds was truly magnificent during this time.
At 6:30 PM, the sunset was unobstructed and absolutely beautiful. The cirrus clouds were artistic, and I was glad to have participated.
We boarded the van before 7 PM to descend and stopped for about an hour to stargaze. We were able to see the Milky Way and the Summer Triangle. The explanation about the stars was helpful, and it was easy to see since there were no lights on the mountain.
After that, we descended in the van, took a restroom break at the Onizuka Visitor Center, returned to Kona, and disbanded at our respective drop-off locations around 10 PM.
As a solo traveler, I honestly debated between the Kilauea Volcano + stargazing tour due to financial and time considerations. However, I thought that the opportunity to see the sunset from the summit is something rare even in Japan, so I chose this tour, and it was definitely the right decision. (By the way, I visited Kilauea Volcano by car the next day.)
As a side note, the BLT sandwich was surprisingly delicious. I would love to have it again.
This tour became a valuable experience. Thank you, James.

ツアー自体は英語オンリーでしたが、ガイドのJamesが、日本語も織り交ぜて雑談や説明をしてくれました。
ツアーとしては、13時にTarget（スーパーマーケット）の駐車場でピックアップがあり、そこから２，３時間ほどで、まずはマウナケア山のオニヅカ・ビジター・センターへ。お手洗休憩などを済ませ、いよいよ山頂へ。途中で、The Very Long Baseline Array （VLBA）などに立ち寄り、各自での写真撮影タイムもありました。山頂には18時前に到着し、しばらく散策し、18時半ごろの日の入りを待ちました。この間も雲海上の景色は本当に素晴らしかったです。
いよいよ18時半、日の入りは遮るものが何もなく、本当に綺麗でした。鱗雲も芸術的で、参加して良かったと思いました。
19時前にバンに乗り込み下山し、途中で１時間ほど星空観測をしました。天の川や夏の大三角も見れました。星空の解説もあり助かりました。山の途中で明かりがなかったのでよく見えました。
その後、バンで下山し、途中でオニヅカオニヅカ・ビジター・センターでお手洗休憩を済ませ、コナに戻り、22時頃に各自の解散場所にて解散という形です。
一人旅であり、正直、金銭面、時間面で、キラウエア火山+星空のツアーと迷いました。ただ、山頂で夕陽を見る機会なんて日本でも滅多に無いことだと思い、こちらを選びましたが、やはり正解でした。（なお、キラウエア火山には翌日車で行きました。）
余談ですが、BLTサンドイッチはビックリするほど美味しかったです。また食べたいと思いましました。
このツアーは貴重な経験になりました。James、ありがとうございました。

We departed from Kailua-Kona, and after a while, we encountered heavy rain. The weather wasn't great even when we entered Saddle Road. I wondered if everything would be okay, but when we arrived at the visitor center, it was cloudy and we couldn't see the summit. Trusting the words of our guide, Shoyo, who said, "The weather at the top is different," we headed towards the summit. At a certain point (around 3000m?), the clouds cleared, and it was a beautiful sunny day. He carefully explained the Palomar Observatory group as we toured around. And then came the much-anticipated sunset. It was a bit cold and windy, but we were able to see the most amazing sunset. After the sun went down, we enjoyed stargazing a little further down. Since all participants were Japanese, it was initially assumed that the communication would be in English, but ultimately everything was conducted in Japanese. The Japanese staff made sure to accommodate only Japanese participants and were considerate right up until the last moment.

The view from the ground was obscured by cloudy skies, but once we ascended above 4,000 meters, we emerged above the clouds and were able to see a beautiful blue sky, a sea of clouds, and a stunning sunset. The explanation regarding altitude sickness prevention was thorough.

We were also able to see an incredibly beautiful Milky Way. The constellations were explained in detail, and the guide took beautiful photos with their camera.

The weather was favorable, and I was able to see wonderful scenery. The sunset over the sea of clouds at the summit of Mauna Kea was truly breathtaking. James, our guide this time, knew all the photo spots and took a lot of pictures for us. It was a great memory.

During the stargazing, we had a guide who spoke Japanese, which made everything very easy to understand and interesting.

They lent us warm clothing and prepared hot cocoa, providing us with excellent hospitality. I also thought it would be nice to see the scenery on a clear day.

This time, I participated in the long-awaited Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing tour on the Big Island. There was a paid shuttle service to the hotel where I was staying, and we started from there. We headed from the Kona area to Waikoloa, picking up other guests along the way, aiming for the summit in a 12-passenger bus. Our guide was James. The main instructions were in English, but he made a great effort to include Japanese for us, and his explanations were very easy to understand as he spoke slowly.

We took a break at the Onizuka Center to acclimatize to the high altitude. At that time, there was fog, and it was uncertain whether we could reach the summit, but thanks to the ranger checking the situation and clearing the way, we were able to proceed safely to the top. Although I didn't feel unwell, I realized the importance of staying hydrated and having light snacks as a precaution against altitude sickness.

The sunset at the summit was one of the most beautiful sights of my life. The view of the sun setting on the horizon and the changing colors of the sky was indescribably moving. James was very kind with photography, using a professional camera to take wonderful pictures. Additionally, there was a Japanese guide on another bus, which was reassuring as we could hear detailed explanations in Japanese.

During the tour, we were served BLT sandwiches and water, which filled us up. There were also jackets and pants available for rent to keep warm, making it comfortable. As night fell, the long-awaited stargazing began. The guide carefully explained the constellations and the universe, and I was able to see the most beautiful Milky Way and a sky full of stars in my life. There were opportunities for photography under the starry sky and hot cocoa service, making it a truly comprehensive experience.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Big Island. It was worth more than the price, and it became an unforgettable experience.

そして迎えた山頂でのサンセットは、これまでの人生で一番といえるほどの美しさでした。水平線に沈む太陽と、空の色合いが刻々と変化していく光景は、言葉では言い尽くせない感動でした。ジェームスさんは写真撮影にもとても親切で、プロ仕様のカメラを使って素晴らしい写真を撮ってくれました。さらに、別のバスには日本人ガイドも同行しており、日本語で詳しい解説を聞くことができたのも安心できるポイントでした。
