I played with horses at the ranch, learned about plants, and took fun photos during the sunset. The lunch was quite delicious, and they provided warm clothing for both the top and bottom, which I thought was better service compared to other tours.

On July 2nd, The historical sunset cruise we took was fabulous right until the end but we were very disappointed that the captain elected to dock five minutes too soon. A fantastic sunset was in the making and if we had slowed down five minutes we would have been treated to a terrific sky. Everyone with a camera was out on deck with cameras ready, and we just pulled right in to dock watching the sun slip behind the island instead of over the water where it would have been had we stayed out five more minutes. I know for certain many others were unhappy with this handling of time. Why we had to dock so quickly is a mystery to me.

I also have to give a big shoutout to our guide who took us to that extraordinary scenery. They paid attention to every detail and showed such dedication throughout the tour, making me feel their professionalism. At the end, we all applauded for the guide!
Seeing the starry sky was much more enjoyable with explanations from someone knowledgeable rather than just looking at it vaguely!

I decided to participate in this luau show because it is conveniently held in the center of Kailua-Kona. Check-in is at 5:00 PM, and there is also an ABC Store in the center of Kona, which is not uncommon in Oahu, so I included some shopping as well. I arrived early and watched what seemed to be a local student canoe team's practice before heading to the venue.
I have participated in luau shows several times in Waikiki, but what I think is great about this luau show is that it takes place in nature. It features Tahitian dance, Hawaiian hula, Fiji dance, Samoan dance, and fire dance—there's a little bit of everything. I believe it offers good cost performance as well.

The tour I wanted to participate in the most on the Big Island was the one to the summit of Mauna Kea. I was really torn between the sunset and sunrise options, but I chose the sunset tour. Although the sunrise option was tempting, I thought that after overcoming jet lag, waking up in the middle of the night might disrupt my health, so I opted for the sunset.
The Mauna Kea Observatory has cutting-edge telescopes, including Japan's Subaru Telescope. It's made by Mitsubishi Electric, and I was impressed by the technological prowess of Japanese electronics manufacturers. And the sunset—followed by a sky full of stars. The starry sky is like a natural planetarium! It’s truly natural, and the stars look incredibly close. They provide detailed explanations using something like a laser pointer.

Last time, I was amazed by the starry sky and multiple satellites, and I definitely wanted to see it again, which is why I chose the Big Island for my honeymoon. This time, the constellations I could see were different, which was interesting. However, when the moon is out, fewer stars are visible, so it's better to choose your participation date wisely.
I plan to participate again.

I participated in April.
The distance from the hotel to Mauna Kea was quite far, but I had a fun journey chatting with a woman I met in the same group as our guide, Mino. (A.T, please contact me as I will be an email error.)
First, we ate our lunch at the Onizuka Visitor Center and observed a plant called silver sword until departure.
It was silver and incredibly beautiful.
Due to strong winds posing a risk of road closure, we departed a bit earlier than planned.
We safely made it to the summit.
At the summit, it was colder than I imagined due to the strong winds, with temperatures below freezing.
I had brought a thermal shirt, T-shirt, sweater, and hand warmers, but it was still cold!
Based on my experience, I recommend bringing the following for those who will go:
- A mask and goggles, as strong winds can blow sand into your mouth and eyes.
- They provide gloves, but they are a bit thin, so bring an extra pair. For those taking photos, thin surgical-like rubber (vinyl) gloves are less cumbersome.
In any case, I recommend layering as much as possible because it’s really cold.
But it’s worth enduring the cold! The sunset was incredibly beautiful.
To avoid the strong winds, we descended to the area near the Onizuka Visitor Center to observe the starry sky, so it wasn’t cold there.
The first thing I said when I got out of the car was, “Wow, amazing!”
I saw a sky full of stars like I’ve never seen before in my life.
There were even shooting stars, but I didn’t have time to make a wish.
I truly had a precious experience!

It was a trip from January 19 to 26, 2009, for a couple aged 119. This was our fourth time in Hawaii, but it was our first time on the Big Island. I wanted to go to Kota Kinabalu, but this time we completely followed my wife's wishes to go via the Big Island to Oahu, which included her desire to participate in stargazing at Mauna Kea and whale watching off the coast of Honolulu. I wasn't particularly interested in stargazing, but I went along with my wife's plans this time. Since we were going from a tropical climate to the summit of Mauna Kea at 4,200 meters with sub-zero temperatures, we needed to prepare as if we were going on a winter trip to Hokkaido. However, seeing the sunset at the summit and then the starry sky after it got completely dark was truly amazing! It felt like someone had opened countless pinholes in the sky and was shining lights from outside. I saw the Milky Way clearly for the first time in my life. Using a large telescope for pinpoint observations and the staff's easy-to-understand explanations made me feel like a temporary astronomy expert. You really realize that Earth is part of the universe. While warm clothing is provided, some preparation on your part is also necessary, so I had more luggage than on previous trips to Hawaii, but it was definitely worth it. Next time, I plan to go around June to immerse myself in a different summer night sky.

The weather was wonderful, with clear skies and we could see the full view of Mauna Loa, but we couldn't reach the summit due to the strong winds! While watching the sunset and feeling a bit envious of the snowy summit visible in front of us, I resolved to come back for the amazing sunset! The starry sky is the second best after the Himalayas. The reason it's second is because the car lights interrupted the view. But thanks to the car, it’s easy to come back, so maybe it’s the best after all! They provided us with warm clothing, which was more comprehensive than other tours. At the Onizuka Center, it was about 10°C, but it felt quite cold due to the wind, so having a hat, gloves, and scarf is essential for warmth. To enjoy the starry sky for a long time, warm clothing is a must!
Although we couldn't reach the summit, I was very satisfied! I was also a bit happy to receive a refund of 15 for not being able to go to the summit! I will definitely go again!

I love the sky.
Whether it's a clear day with not a single cloud or a sky filled with fluffy clouds,
when the sunset shines through, an indescribable moment begins.
Who would have imagined on the tropical island of Hawaii that we could see snow? (There were even people snowboarding.)
It wasn't a perfectly clear day, but that's why we were able to see the sea of clouds, together with you.
I think there's something here that makes me want to visit again and again. I want to encounter a different scenery.
But I would prefer to see it again with you.

This is my second time coming to the Big Island. Last September, I was completely captivated by Hawaii, and now I'm back just three months later. This time, I’m determined to challenge Mauna Kea, which I couldn't visit on a day trip before! So, I arranged it for the second day of my arrival on December 15.
Since we left at noon, I was glad to have a leisurely morning. I was worried because there were many clouds, but mountain weather can change quickly, so I prayed for good conditions at the summit as we set off.
Our guide, who spoke in Kansai dialect, instantly transported me back to Japan with his lively chatter. The road was bumpy, especially on Saddle Road, which you can't reach by rental car.
We took a couple of breaks along the way, and as the temperature gradually dropped, I layered my clothes to acclimate to the increasing altitude. At the Onizuka Center, the traditional Japanese bento was quite delicious, and the miso soup warmed me up nicely. I also got to see the silversword plant.
We climbed through the clouds we could see from the ground and finally arrived at the summit, where various observatories from different countries are located. I borrowed some warm clothing. The temperature that day was around 1 degree Celsius. There was no wind, so it felt relatively warm for this time of year. However, if you go in with a Hawaiian mindset, it’s still quite cold. Surprisingly, I managed better than I expected, but I didn’t know about the gloves and missed the chance to borrow them, so my hands were freezing!
Just before sunset, I was able to witness a beautiful sunset as the sea of clouds below gradually turned orange. After the sunset, it changed to a rosy hue, and as it got darker, we descended a bit to the stargazing point. The starry sky was pitch black, and the temperature felt even colder. Perhaps due to the high altitude, my footing felt a bit unsteady, and my thinking was slowing down. There were a few clouds, but from the spots where the clouds cleared, we were carefully shown the constellations. I couldn’t remember half of what I saw with the laser pointer and telescope, but I was moved by the Andromeda Galaxy. The clouds gradually cleared, and at one point, I even saw the Milky Way.
After that, we just headed back. As we got closer to the ground, it started to warm up, and by the time we reached Kailua-Kona, it was hot. I really felt how amazing the Big Island is. I conquered the highest elevation of 4,205 meters (and did it easily by van), and in Japan...
