Things I wanted to see on the Big Island: Nature Point on the east side, Kilauea Volcano, and sunset & stargazing from Mauna Kea. I considered doing a combined tour of Kilauea and Mauna Kea, but due to travel time and some places being inaccessible, I decided to join separate tours.

In the end, it was a great success and I was very satisfied. We left in the afternoon, took our time acclimating by having a meal at the mid-level, and then headed to the summit. I only brought a lightweight down jacket and an outdoor jacket. They lent me ski wear, a hat, and gloves, so I was able to enjoy the sunset at the summit without shivering from the cold and had a wonderful view of the starry sky! There were so many stars that I didn't even know where to look.

That day was Tanabata. In Japan, it often rains or is cloudy on this day, but we had a clear view of the Milky Way. I was given instructions on how to take photos that looked like composites, and the results turned out great! The tour staff helped set up my camera for beautiful shots, and I ended up with lovely photos. Of course, you can also take wonderful pictures with your smartphone.

In addition to bottled water, they provided warm miso soup and drinks during the meal, which was nice. I was really lucky with the weather. I’m grateful that my number one thing I wanted to do on the Big Island turned out to be such a wonderful day, along with the attentive service and the entertaining guide! I'm glad I made the reservation in advance, as the tour was fully booked.

午後ゆっくり出発して中腹で食事をとったりして時間をかけて体を慣らし、山頂へ。
持参したのは薄手のダウンやアウトドアジャケットだけ。
スキーウエア上下、帽子、手袋を貸してもらえたので山頂でも寒さに震えることなくゆっくりサンセットを楽しみ、素敵な満天の星を眺めることができました！
星がいっぱい過ぎてどこ見ていいかわからないぐらい。
この日は七夕。日本だと雨や曇りの多いこの日ですがくっきりミルキーウエイ。
合成写真かと思うほどの
写真もこんな風にしてみてとご指示？をいただきどんな写真になるのかと思ったらこんな感じです！ツアースタッフがきれいに撮れる設定をちょちょいとしてくれたりしてマイカメラにも素敵な写真が残りました。もちろんスマホでも十分素敵な写真撮れます。
ペットボトルのお水の他、食事の際には温かいお味噌汁やドリンクが用意されていたのも良かったです。
天候に恵まれたのは本当にラッキーでした。ハワイ島でやりたかったことのナンバー１がこんなに素敵な日であったことと、行き届いたサービス、面白ガイドさんに感謝です！
申し込みは前もってしていって良かったです。満席でした。

This time, we had made a reservation for a family of four, but only one reservation was found. Since it wasn't specified whether the meeting place was the lower lobby or the main lobby, I asked the person at the tour desk, and that’s how I found out. I wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t checked in advance. It was a bit surprising. The optional content was good, so it's a shame. However, I do think that people who are proficient in English will enjoy it more.

I participated with my husband after being recommended by a community on Facebook that loves the Big Island of Hawaii. Our guide was "Matsucchan," who looked great in a knit hat. On the day of the tour, I was a bit worried because it started to drizzle under a cloudy sky, but the guide's expertise was evident!

Working in tandem with another guide, Konno, we persevered and moved locations as needed to find the best spots, allowing us to enjoy both the sunset and the starry sky. It was said that the following day would feature a meteor shower (I forgot the name of it), so visibility was a bit challenging, but we had a clear view of the moon through a reflecting telescope (which can be tracked via GPS), and with the careful explanations using a laser pointer, we learned about the constellations and their history.

What impressed me the most was their ability to not miss any photo opportunities! They managed all the positions, so I felt completely at ease.

Additionally, there’s a follow-up story: during the tour, my husband lost his favorite sunglasses and was feeling down the next day. However, when we inquired about it on a whim, they found them on the bus and delivered them during that day's tour. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude once again. Thank you, Matsucchan, for the wonderful memories and the follow-up! (≧▽≦)

FaceBookのハワイ島好きコミュニティで勧められたこともあり、夫と二人で参加しました。
ガイドはニット帽がよく似合う"松っちゃん"。
当日は途中から霧雨の曇り空で大丈夫かなーと思ってたんですが、週5回上っている眼力は確かです！

もう1グループのガイドで相方のkonnoさんと連携して、粘りながら時には場所を移動しながら、ポイントを探し出して、サンセットも星空もしっかり観ることができました。
星空はナントカ流星群（聞いたのに忘れました;）が飛び交った翌日らしいので、ちょっと見えづらい感じでしたが、月は反射望遠鏡（GPSで追えるらしいです）でバッチリ見えたし、レーザーポインターを使っての丁寧な説明で、見えた星から星座の配置図とか歴史とかも知ることができました。

もっとも感心したのはシャッターチャンスとポイントを外さないこと！
立ち位置も全部仕切ってくれるので、任せておけば安心でした。

あと後日談がありまして、ツアー中に夫がお気に入りのサングラスを失くしてしまい、翌日半日ションボリしていたのですが、ダメモトで問い合わせたら、バスの中で見つけてその日のツアーの流れで届けてくれました。
この場を借りて、もう一度お礼が言いたいです。
松っちゃん、楽しい思い出とアフターフォローをありがとうございました(≧▽≦)

Our guide is David and he was very kind and informative. He provided a lot of island guide and knowledge of astronomy and geography. Everything in the tour were just fine. We had all things we needed. I loved the parka very much. Without the parka and the gloves, I would be freezed at the height of 4000m. When I saw the milky way in the sky, I was very very touched. It's incredible!!!!

The hurricane passed, and with clear skies and no moon, the starry night was truly beautiful. It was probably the most amazing sight I've ever seen, and I was moved. It was quite windy and cold, but they prepared warm tea for us, and the "freshly baked" cookies were delicious.

I rode a horse for an hour and a half in the great outdoors of Waipi'o Valley. I truly enjoyed it. However, I believe that a certain level of intermediate English proficiency is absolutely necessary for this tour, as you need to understand natural-speed English and be able to express yourself clearly in English.

I arrived at the meeting place 30 minutes early and wasn't sure where the check-in area was, so I asked in English if check-in was necessary, but the answer was NO. Just before the time, I asked another Japanese tour participant, who told me that the check-in was done at the back, so I hurried to complete the process. Then, I was scolded for being too slow in English.

Up until a certain point after the tour started, everything was going well and I was having fun, but my wife's horse got startled and began to act up after bumping into the horse behind it, causing a rodeo-like situation, and my wife was almost in tears. Even then, she was reprimanded for her riding style.

I think it's a tour that potential participants should consider the risk that even an amateur riding normally could lead to a horse acting up. While I was very satisfied with the content of the tour, my wife felt very scared and uncomfortable. I wish she could have expressed in English that it wasn't her fault when the horse started acting up...

If nothing happens, you can enjoy it by following along, but I want everyone to be aware of the risks mentioned. The only time we received a smile was when they were accepting tips...

30分前に集合場所に到着し、受付場所がよくわからないのでチェックインは必要なのか？頑張って英語で聞いたところ、NO。時間ギリギリで別の日本人ツアー参加者に聞いたところ、奥で手続しましたと言われ慌てて手続き。すると、英語であまりにも遅いとケンカ腰でまくしたてられました。
ツアーが始まってから途中までは何事もなく、楽しく過ごしていたのですが、妻の馬が後ろの馬にぶつかられて驚き暴れだしてロデオ状態になり、妻は半泣き状態になりましたが、ここでも妻の乗り方が悪いと叱責する始末。
素人が普通に乗って馬が暴れるようなリスクが一定の可能性であることも、頭に入れて申込みを検討された方がいいと思うツアーです。
ツアーの内容自体は大満足でしたが、妻はとても怖く、不快な思いをしました。せめて馬が暴れだしたのは自分のせいじゃないとしっかり英語で話せたらとも…
何もなければ、見よう見まねで楽しめますが、記載したリスクがあることは皆さんにお伝えしたいと思います。チップを受け取るときだけでしたよ、我々に笑顔だったのは…

I participated in the Mauna Kea Summit Sunset & Stargazing Tour with Reflecting Telescope by Masashi Nature School. The tour had only Japanese participants, totaling nine people, and we traveled in a box car. Our tour guide was a Japanese man named Jin, who graduated from the University of Hawaii and conducted research on volcanoes locally. He shared interesting stories about Hawaii's volcanoes, flora and fauna, and daily life during the drive, so we were never bored in the car.

First, we stopped at a spot with a 360-degree view of the lava landscape for a commemorative photo. The guide actively took pictures for everyone with their cameras, which was very helpful. Next, we had a bento lunch at a relay point at the observatory. I had imagined it would be something simpler, but it was a substantial bento that even included miso soup. After eating, we were provided with warm clothing (thick coveralls, gloves, and knit hats) and headed to the summit. I hadn’t brought much warm clothing to hot Hawaii, but honestly, the provided gear was sufficient, and I was fine with just long-sleeved underwear. I was also concerned about altitude sickness, but thanks to the guide's advice on breathing techniques and care, I had no issues. The sunset and stargazing afterward were incredibly beautiful, and the guide's explanations were easy to understand. I’m really glad I participated, so I highly recommend it!

マウナケア山頂 サンセット＆星空観測ツアー＜反射望遠鏡＞ by マサシネイチャースクールに参加しました。ツアー参加者は日本人ばかりで全員で9名の参加で、１BOXカーで移動しました。ツアーガイドはハワイ大学を出られて現地で火山の研究をされていたJINさんという日本人の方で移動中もハワイの火山の話から動植物の話、日常のお話など面白おかしく話していただいて移動中の車の中でも全く退屈することはありませんでした。初めに360度溶岩の風景の箇所に下りて記念撮影。ガイドさんが積極的に皆のカメラで写真と取っていただいたのも助かりました。続いて、天体観測所の中継地点にてお弁当で腹ごしらえ。もっと簡素なものかと想像していましたがしっかりとしたお弁当で、お味噌汁もついていました。食後は防寒着（厚手のつなぎ、手袋、ニット帽）を貸していただきいざ山頂へ。暑いハワイであまり防寒着を持ってきていなかったですが、正直用意されているものだけで、後は長袖の下着のみでOKですので、長ズボン、ジャケットなどはなくても私は大丈夫でした。高山病の心配もしていましたがガイドさんからの呼吸法などのアドバイスや気遣いもあり問題ありませんでした。その後の日没、星空もとてもきれいでまたガイドさんの説明もわかりやすくて参加して本当に良かったですので、是非おススメです！！

I participated in a tour on the day of the new moon! After reading reviews of various tour companies, I chose this highly-rated tour. It lived up to the expectations set by the reviews, and I am very satisfied.

Since it was a new moon, the Milky Way was clearly visible without any moonlight, and I was able to see shooting stars, which was a very precious experience. My friends, who only speak English, were well taken care of, and I felt the kindness and hospitality of the guides.

Gordon, our Driver / Guide was very knowledgable of the Island and was a great guide of the cosmos. I will definitely be returning and have already shared some of the pictures i took, and people still dont believe how great the stars you can see with the naked eye. I couldn't believe how great it looked almost fake it was that Great of an experience. Thanks for the Dinner and Hot Drink selection at the end of our star gazing tour.

The sunset at the summit of Mauna Kea was also very wonderful, but it was a bit cold. During the stargazing, I saw the Milky Way for the first time in my life. The guide's explanations were easy to understand and entertaining. It takes about an hour and a half by car from Kailua-Kona to the meeting point, and I arrived without getting lost thanks to the map. We took the shop's van down the steep slopes of Waipi'o Valley to reach the starting point for horseback riding. Along the course, we crossed rivers, saw several waterfalls, and observed wild plants and fruits growing along the side paths. The horses were calm, and I never felt in danger as we enjoyed a fun hour and a half. This is a highly recommended tour that takes you to places that are not easily accessible on foot.

カイルアコナから集合場所まで車で約1時間半、地図を頼りに迷うことなく到着。お店のバンでワイピオ渓谷の急坂を下り乗馬のスタート地点に到着。コースの途中では川を渡ったり、幾つかの滝を見たり、脇道に自生する植物や果物を見たりしながら進みます。馬も大人しく、危険を感じることもなくあっという間に楽しい1時間半ほどが過ぎてします。歩いては簡単に行けないところへ行けるお勧めのツアーです。

Kohala Canopy Zipline Adventure on the Big Island - Aerial Sky Bridges and Optional Waterfall Swim

My entire family had a blast zip lining through the tree canopies! Chris and Cassie were our guides and they were hospitable, informative and patient. It was our first time zip lining in such an environment-hundreds of feet in the air and we felt completely comfortable and confident in their hands. They provided us with water and snacks midway and at the conclusion of our adventure, including freshly picked bananas! They shared knowledge about the vegetation and geographical landmarks, as well as, insight into local eateries! Not only did we enjoy the various zip lines, but there were also suspension bridges and a final rappel to the ground. You also get to ride in a really cool armory jeep of some sort as you travel to and from the excursion. It surpassed our expectations and we were so glad to have chosen that adventure during our travels on The Big Island.

Naalapa Stables Kohala Horseback Riding Tour on Kahua Ranch

Great horses, magnificent ranch

The horses were really well trained, no skill was required to ride them. We had a couple of chances to canter, but due to the different skill levels of the riders, we only cantered for only a couple of minutes total. One lady lost her cellphone during the canter and we all had to stop while the guides looked for it in the tall grass. They weren't able to find it and we lost some time and further opportunities to canter. The views from our trail were amazing, and it was a great way to spend a morning. If we could've split up according to skill level so who wanted to go faster could, as there were 3 guides to about 6-8 riders, then I would've given it 5 stars.

Kohala Waterfalls Hike & Swim Eco Tour + Off-Road Adventure with Picnic Lunch

The nature walk was just perfect. We were transported to the forest by a great big open truck with 6 wheels. It was to full capacity with 11 people on board plus our guide and driver, Noi. She was super experienced driving the truck (which didn't seem easy) and very knowledgeable about all that was around us in the forest. She went out of her way to make sure we all had captured the right pictures. The waterfall was super pretty and refreshing to swim in. The views were fantastic and the time went by super quickly.
I would definitely recommend this adventure to everyone who can easily walk for an hour or so straight.

This was one of the top highlights of our trip. The van ride into and out of the valley is an adventure all of it's own. The guides were just awesome. The family of one had lived in the valley for generations and he was very knowledgeable about the area. The other one was just a riot. The horses also had more spunk than your average trail horse, too. Some of them had been wild horses not too long ago. I don't know if these guys do a longer ride, but I would definitely sign up for it if they did.

Compared to Waikiki, the weather was not very good, and I was a bit worried, but by the time we reached the summit, it was clear skies! We were able to see the shining sunset and the Venus Belt that appeared after sunset.

The stargazing afterward was also wonderful, as we enjoyed a sky full of stars, including the Milky Way, the Southern Cross, and planets. It was truly a fantastic experience, and my friend and I were both deeply moved.

The weather on the day we participated was fortunate, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful sunset from the mountaintop and a stunning starry sky. Our guide, Jin, was friendly and kind, and Yamachan's explanations about the stars were very easy to understand and witty, which made for a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Thank you for the wonderful time. Lastly, the miso soup served during dinner at the Onizuka Center was very delicious. If you're someone who gets cold easily, it might be a good idea to bring a neck warmer.

This was my second time participating in the sunset and stargazing tour at the summit of Mauna Kea! The sea of clouds and the sunset were absolutely amazing, and it was so soothing. I was able to feel the clear air and enjoy a peaceful moment! The stargazing coincided with Tanabata, and I was able to see the Milky Way as well as my zodiac sign, Leo. No matter how many times I visit the Big Island, I always get to see it in different ways, which is so much fun and allows me to create many memories! The tour guides were all full of vitality, and having Japanese guides made me feel at ease. I look forward to more enjoyable tours in the future!

やはり雲海、夕陽が最高で、、、癒されました。

This was my first time participating in horseback riding at the Kohala Coast. Previously, I rode in Waipi'o Valley. Riding in Waipi'o was quite thrilling, as the horse would wade through the river, almost getting our feet wet, and it was a lot of fun. However, this year, due to concerns about Zika and dengue fever, I opted for horseback riding in the mountains.

All the staff were women, and they were all adorable cowgirls. They let us run the horses at times, which gave a very free impression. Helmets, boots, and jackets for riding can be rented on-site. You can hang a pocket on the horse's back to carry water bottles, valuables, and cameras.

At scenic spots, they took photos for us. I highly recommend horseback riding on the Big Island!

今回、コハラ・コーストでの乗馬ははじめての参加です。以前はワイピオ渓谷での乗馬でした。ワイピオも水に足が浸かりそうな程ジャブジャブと川の中を馬の背に揺られたりしてかなりスリリングな体験ができて楽しかったですが、今年はジカ熱やデング熱の心配があるからと、山の上での乗馬にしました。
スタッフは全員女性。かわいいカウガールばかりでした。途中で走らせてくれたり、かなり自由な印象です。乗馬用のヘルメットやブーツ、上着などはその場でレンタルできます。馬の背にポケットを下げて、ペットボルや貴重品、カメラなどを持つことができます。
景色の良いところでは、写真を撮っていただけました。
ハワイ島での乗馬はおススメです！！

For our 25th wedding anniversary, we visited the Big Island of Hawaii for the first time. We heard about a sunset and stargazing tour, and I felt we had to go, so we chose the highly-rated tour from "Masashi Nature School" among many options.

On the day of the tour, we were picked up from our hotel around 3:30 PM. We boarded the last two seats of the 13-person capacity van. There was a bit of tension about climbing to an altitude of 4200 meters, which is higher than Mount Fuji, but our guide, Jin, reassured us that we would be fine since we could drive to the summit and would properly acclimatize.

The shield volcano has a gentle slope, so it didn’t feel like we were climbing much, yet we quickly surpassed 2000 meters in elevation. Along the way, we took commemorative photos and arrived at the Onizuka Visitor Center (at 2800 meters). We had a dinner of bento and miso soup to help with acclimatization. The temperature had dropped, so the warm miso soup was very welcome.

Finally, we attacked the summit! Although we were just sitting in the car, it was quite easy. Upon reaching the summit, we saw the sunset over a sea of clouds. The colors of the sky changed moment by moment, and then came the sunset. It was breathtaking!

After other tours descended the mountain, we followed suit. Jin had options for stargazing spots based on the day's weather and conditions, and he chose the best location for us. Although the moon was somewhat bright at 10 days old, the sky was filled with stars. Jin provided explanations about the stars, and my childhood passion for astronomy was reignited. We were able to observe the craters on the moon and the rings of Saturn through a telescope. It was also great to see the Southern Cross clearly. We took commemorative photos in various poses against the starry backdrop.

Blessed with good weather, we thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful sunset and stargazing. Thanks to Jin's thoughtful care, we had a truly enjoyable time. Thank you!

当日のピックアップはホテルの場所柄15時半過ぎ。定員13人の最後の二席に乗り込む。
これから富士山より高い標高4200Mの山に登るという緊張感もあったが、山頂まで車で行けるし、高度順応のちゃんとやっていくので大丈夫というガイドの仁さんの説明で一安心。
盾状火山で道が緩やかなため、あまり登っている感覚はないが、あっと言う間に標高2000Mを超えていく。
途中、記念撮影などしてオニズカ・ビジターセンター（標高2800M）に到着。高度順応を兼ねたお弁当とお味噌汁の夕食。さすがに気温も下がってきたので、温かいお味噌汁がありがたい。
いよいよ山頂にアタック！とはいってもこっちは車に座っているだけなので楽チン楽チン。
山頂に着くと雲海の上に傾きかけた夕日。空の色が刻一刻と変化していく。そして、サンセット。感動！
他のツアーが山を下りた後、我々も続く。仁さんはその日の天候やコンディションに会わせた星空観測スポット候補を持っているそうで、今回もベストの場所をチョイス。
月齢10日の月がやや明るいものの、空には満天の星空が広がる。仁さんによる星空の説明。小さい頃からの天文ファンの血がたぎる。 望遠鏡で月面のクレーターや土星の輪も観測することが出来た。南十字星が大きくはっきり見えたのも良かった。星空をバックにして思い思いのポーズでの記念撮影も。
天候にも恵まれ、素晴らしいサンセットと星空を堪能。仁さんの細やかなお心遣いのおかげでとても楽しい時間を過ごすことが出来た。ありがとうございます！

I had a wonderful time on the Big Island of Hawaii, riding horses with my daughter and husband. It was the perfect way to relax. During our trip, we enjoyed scuba diving and golf, and when we were tired, we lounged by the hotel pool, sipping on some cold beer and soaking in the happiness. Interacting with the horses was also very soothing. I was moved by the beauty of the coastline.

娘と夫婦３人で行った、大人だけのハワイ島馬に揺られて最高の骨休めのひと時が味わえました。旅行中は、スキューバダイビングとゴルフ、疲れた時はホテルのプールサイドで寝そべり、
