Big Island
Basically, the guide spoke in English, but important points were also explained in Japanese.
Once we reached the summit, the guide actively took photos and provided explanations.
During the stargazing, we didn't just look at the stars; we were divided into Japanese and English groups, and we received very detailed information about star names, constellations, and their origins.
Overall, it was a highly satisfying tour. Thank you very much.
The summit is colder than you might expect, so I think it's a good idea to have not just a jacket, but also gloves and earmuffs.
The guide (Chris) provided incredibly informative explanations!
From the formation of the Big Island, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa, to stories about Japan's pride, baseball player Shohei Ohtani. The drive to the summit was long, but I was never bored at all. I truly appreciated the guide's expertise! Thank you for the memories on the Big Island!
The altitude is cold! The guide will provide warm clothing, but participants should prepare their own gloves and knit hats. If you're worried, it's a good idea to bring a hot pack as well.
The guide, who spoke Japanese, provided detailed explanations in Japanese since there were many Japanese participants. Throughout the journey, I was never bored as they shared information about the Big Island, the flowers we saw along the way, and the wild goats.
As the car climbed the mountain, I was worried that the road to the summit might be closed due to the thick fog, but once we got through it, I was amazed to see the blue sky at the top. The sunset sinking into the sea of clouds was incredibly beautiful.
The starry sky afterward was also stunning, and the guide pointed out the Southern Cross, which is said to be visible only during this time of year. Perhaps because it was the day of the Kilauea volcano eruption, we could see smoke and a faint red light in the night sky, which even showed up in the photos we took.
Thank you for such a precious experience.
If you come to the Big Island of Hawaii, I definitely recommend experiencing this. Also, as a guideline, it's customary to give a tip of 20% of the tour price in cash to the guide at the end. While so
I actually wanted to join the sunrise tour at the summit, but due to scheduling conflicts, I signed up for the sunset tour instead.
As a result, it was an incredibly satisfying tour!
◾️ About the guide
I was a bit anxious about having an English-speaking guide, but the guide made a great effort to explain important points in Japanese using a translation device.
That said, most of the tour was in English, so I was mostly lost during the journey (laughs).
However, the guide's personality was wonderful, and they were always considerate, making it easy to enjoy the tour.
The day before the tour, we drove from Kona to Hilo in a rental car, and while driving on the same route as the tour, we were suddenly hit by a heavy downpour and dense fog that made it impossible to see in front of us, which was quite scary.
However, the guide was experienced in driving, so even in similar weather conditions, they drove smoothly, allowing us to feel safe during the ride. It was reassuring.
◾️ Tour flow
We boarded the shuttle bus at Queens Market, but the meeting point was somewhat hard to find.
It said "shuttle bus stop," but I don't recall seeing any bus signs.
There was a nearby shop mentioned in the directions, but it seemed to be closed, so it wasn't helpful.
There was an area where it seemed like a bus could enter, and since there were people who appeared to be participants (including from other tour companies) waiting there, we waited and felt relieved when the bus arrived.
There were about ten participants in total, from various nationalities.
The elevation increased rapidly, and the guide encouraged us to take deep breaths several times during the journey.
We took a break at the Onizuka Visitor Center, where we had a delicious BLT sandwich and water.
At this point, the temperature had dropped significantly, but it wasn't as cold as mid-winter.
After leaving the visitor center, we suddenly hit the off-road section, and the bumps became quite intense.
If you're prone to motion sickness, it might be a good idea to bring some medication.
Additionally, due to the high altitude, I felt a bit short of breath.
However, the scenery around us was so beautiful that I didn't even have the luxury of feeling unwell.
It was a view that you could never see in Japan, almost as if we had landed on another planet in space.
As we approached the summit, the guide took us to several photo spots.
The views were so magnificent that I couldn't help but exclaim in awe.
The guide also took photos for us and suggested various poses, capturing some creative shots!
At this point, it was extremely cold.
Hats, earmuffs, and gloves are essential.
The jacket provided was thick and warm.
There are portable toilets near the summit, so as long as you can hold out from the visitor center to the summit (which takes a little over an hour), you don't have to worry about restroom breaks.
Before we knew it, the sun set, revealing a breathtaking view that words cannot describe.
The scenery changed so beautifully that I couldn't take my eyes off it for even a second.
After the sun went down, we headed to the stargazing point.
Here, we were served warm cocoa.
We then joined another tour group, and their guide mainly led the stargazing.
This guide was fluent in Japanese and explained all the constellations in Japanese.
While they were explaining, I realized that the sky was filled with countless stars.
We even observed the eruption of Kilauea volcano in the distance between the stars.
I was surprised to learn that what I thought was a star moving strangely was actually a satellite.
Finally, the guide took group photos with a DSLR camera for each group.
The photos, which couldn't be captured with a smartphone, were breathtakingly beautiful and became the perfect proof of my existence in this stunning scenery.
After that, we headed back.
We took a restroom break along the way and returned to Queens Market around 10 PM.
I regret not being able to e
Since it's very cold, I think it's a good idea to prepare items like hats and ear muffs. Since it will be a long tour, it might also be a good idea to bring some snacks to satisfy your hunger.
It was a mountain climbing tour that will remain in my memories for a lifetime. What impressed me the most was the breathtaking starry sky that filled the night. The view was so beautiful that it left me speechless, as if I had been thrown into the universe.
Additionally, near the summit, the thin air made me acutely aware of the dangers of altitude sickness. For the first time, I experienced the sensation of not having enough oxygen, which made me feel a bit of danger. However, the tour guide's response was excellent, and thanks to their accurate advice, I was able to get through it without any issues.
At the summit, the oxygen is thin, so those who have concerns about their cardiopulmonary function may want to refrain from participating.
I had heard that the tour would be conducted in English, but the guide was also fluent in Japanese and explained the important parts of the tour and announcements in Japanese as well. I felt a bit unwell at the summit, but during that time, they provided attentive care and engaged each guest with topics tailored to their personalities during the free time. I was able to enjoy the tour with great peace of mind.
At the summit, temperatures can drop close to 0 degrees, so warm clothing such as down jackets and gloves are essential. Additionally, since the vehicle will be driving off-road and the elevation at t
The sunset and starry sky might not be fresh for those who come here, but let's enjoy the extraordinary view! It was amazing! The BLT sandwich had crispy bacon, and it was delicious. During the starry sky, the temperature was 2-4°C, and the cocoa was comforting! There was an English guide, and everyone in the group was fine with English, but I gave a little extra tip to the guide who made an effort to sprinkle in some Japanese here and there. ^_^
It's really cold! Don't underestimate it; let's borrow the gear included in the tour price!
It was a wonderful moment.
The path to the summit was cloudy, but near the top, the weather was clear.
The sunset viewed from the summit of Mauna Kea was beautiful, and I was able to take many commemorative photos.
The BLT we had was also delicious.
For stargazing, there was only about an hour from sunset to moonrise, and I was worried about whether we would be able to see the stars, but they were visible without any issues. During the observation, we received explanations about the constellations and were able to take more photos.
There is a gift shop at the visitor center on the way to the summit.
Although there were clouds and I couldn't see the scenery below, the view of the sunset sinking into the sea of clouds with the multiple observatories at the summit was quite nice in its own way. I was looking forward to stargazing, but it was a bit disappointing because the moon was too bright. Still, I was glad to see Orion, the Big Dipper, and even some satellites.
It was written at the time of booking that there would be no Japanese guide, but the very kind Matsuo (Chris) guided us in Japanese and took us along. The fog was so thick that we couldn't reach the summit for a while and had to wait at the Onizuka Visitor Center. However, once we got the go-ahead to head to the top, we faced incredible wind and cold ❄️. I borrowed a jacket, ski pants, and gloves 🧤, and somehow managed to enjoy the beautiful sunset! I was also happy that they took many photos for us❣️ After descending to 3,700 meters, we started stargazing 🔭. On that day, the moon was shining so brightly that there were fewer stars to see 💦, but we were able to spot shooting stars and satellites, and enjoyed delicious sweet cocoa, which made me very satisfied. It was truly fun to come with my husband's parents and my mother, a total of five of us 😌.
Waiting for the sunset was a sacred moment. It was a shame that stargazing wasn't great since it was close to a full moon. I want to try again. The cocoa after seeing the moon was delicious!
There are borrowed cold-weather jackets available, but it’s reassuring to prepare your own warm clothing since the summit can be quite cold.
Meixai was very fun & knowledgeable.
Bummed we missed the eruption by just over a day, but that's nature.
Saw many craters & went in a Lava tube.
Again nature thwarted us for the stargazing as the moon was too bright.
Wear good walking shoes.
This tour was great fun. The off-roading was excellent and the views absolutely beautiful. The guides were funny and full of interesting Hawaii facts/information. My kids also had a great time and said this was their favorite tour.
You will get dirty. Obviously bring a camera.
It was an unexpected private event, and the weather was perfect, making it absolutely amazing! The starry sky was stunning, and I was so moved like never before! I would love to participate again if I have the chance! Big Mahalo~ 🤘🤟
You should participate even if the weather is iffy!
I was taken care of by the guide, Shoutarou. He explained everything alternately in English and Japanese, which made it very easy to understand and I felt安心して参加できました😊. The reservation date was canceled due to bad weather, but when I contacted them, they were able to change it to the next day. I wanted to go to Mauna Kea, so I was very grateful for their対応!!
The summit was windier and colder than I expected. They do provide cold weather gear, but you'll need to prepare your own inner layers as well! Having a hot pack would have been helpful too. 😁
Although I was able to reach the summit of Mauna Kea, unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate, and I was unable to see the sunset or the starry sky. I appreciated that they offered a partial refund when both were not visible.
Even though I couldn't see either, the guide was supposed to explain in English but provided explanations in Japanese instead, and the guidance at the summit was consistently polite and enjoyable. During the restroom break on the way back, they mentioned that we might see some stars, and I was delighted to catch a glimpse of a few through the clouds.
It was such a good tour that I would like to choose a day with better weather and participate in the tour again next time.
I was really moved to be able to reach the summit of Mauna Kea, but I felt even more disappointed that I couldn't experience the sunset and stargazing. If possible, I think it's best to make a reserva
This trip was very enjoyable, we got to learn about all the volcanoes and various other attractions. And see some amazing sights, including telescopes and sunsets!
Although it was an English tour, the guide spoke Japanese and provided explanations in both English and Japanese, which made it easy to understand and was great. They also took many beautiful photos for us.
I can say enough good things about this experience! Everything about it!
It was my first horseback riding experience, and it was an incredibly fun time. We started with a thorough lecture on horseback riding, including how to get on and off the horse and how to handle the reins. I was amazed at how quickly I could control my horse after riding!
We lined up and trotted along, crossing fields and hills until we reached the entrance of a waterfall, where we dismounted and went down some stairs to a cottage by the waterfall. Unfortunately, due to a recent storm, the wild waterfall was flowing with cold brown water! We quickly gave up on playing in the water.
We spent about 30 minutes at the riverside cottage eating snacks and our lunch before riding back. On the way back, we felt the roundness of the Earth from a hill that was different from the way there, passing through a cattle ranch. I was surprised to see the horses munching on banana leaves along the way. A little dog named Kizumo accompanied us cutely, which was very soothing.
There were three of us participating (a couple in their 50s and an 8-year-old), and this became the best memory of our trip to the Big Island. It's not accessible without a rental car, but I definitely want to recommend it to my friends. I also want to thank our experienced instructors, Lee and Jamie. Thank you very much! ^_^
Everything is in English, so it was fine even for an 8-year-old girl. All luggage will be transferred to riding containers. You can't ride with a daypack on your back. The road that enters from Route

Seeing the sun set above the cloud line is a once in a lifetime experience. Our guide, Fernando, made the night that much more enjoyable with the knowledge (and parkas) he shared. After the spectacular sun set we went further down the mountain to star gaze. The telescope he had was amazing, and it was super cool to see so many, and different, stars we see at home. This was a 10 out of 10 experience and I would highly recommend it..
The view of the sea of clouds and sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea was breathtaking. On the way there, I was caught in the rain and felt a bit anxious, but once I broke through the clouds, a clear sky opened up, and I was moved by the beautiful mountains and sky! Not only at the summit, but we also stopped by the observatory to take photos, allowing us to capture many great shots. As we got closer to the top, the air became thinner, but I felt reassured as they always checked on my condition! Along the way, they also shared many recommended spots on the Big Island! I definitely want to recommend this experience!
Wonderful ride and day! Patricia and Kaleo guided us through a beautiful ranch!! Great horses! Jack & Liz
My friend and I had a great time. Ronson was great knew all about the ranch and the habitat. I loved the ponds with fish to use for fertilizer. The ocean view was awesome and we did a couple whales. Thanks so much for a great ride.
I loved this zipline experience! I took a friend with me, and we had such an amazing time. The instructors were so funny and down to earth. Amazing views over the waterfall.
I was with James as a tour guide on our tour he was very friendly and responsive.
There was another group with the same company and Their guide was Wes. Both guys made everything easy, enjoyable and pleasant all through the tour. The hot coco we had while stargazing was sooo appreciated and nice touch.
Thanks to all.
If there would be Hand warmers it would be useful
Very professional and entertaining guide.
Interesting commentary on the way to the top.
Don’t miss it.
The forecast was cloudy, but I was very satisfied to see both the sunset and a sky full of stars! The starry sky was especially beautiful, and I could even see the Pleiades! They lent us warm clothing, so we were able to enjoy it while staying warm!
People who are sensitive to the cold must have winter clothing!
The local tour guide was American and provided a thorough explanation. It was very cold at the summit, but I was able to endure the cold thanks to the warm clothing and gloves they lent me. The scene of the sunset, the starry sky, and the moment the moon appeared were truly moving.
Since the altitude is 4,000 meters, be careful of altitude sickness. Let's make sure to take care of our health.
I was really worried whether the bus would actually come since I applied from Japan, but it arrived on time, and the explanation in Japanese was very clear, which was great. I was concerned about being on the bus for a long time, but it didn't shake much, and I had a lot of fun. The sunset was also wonderful, and I was moved by the many stars I saw for the first time. Thank you very much.
It would be nice to have adhesive heat packs since my feet were cold.
