I was picked up at my hotel around 2:00 PM and was able to see the sunset and the starry sky. I was worried about the weather since it was raining in Kona in the morning, but the summit was clear with no clouds, and the view was very beautiful. We stopped at several observatories along the way, and I was able to take a lot of photos. I appreciated that our Japanese guide, SHOYO, came along and provided support in Japanese at times. I highly recommend this tour!

The tour guides, Nato and Henry, were amazing and had so much knowledge about Kohala and Hawaiian history. This tour educated us on other areas that we ended up going to visit during our trip.

It was a completely different experience from what I've had on Oahu before. I was moved by the sea of clouds and the sunset from the mountaintop that I saw for the first time. I highly recommend seeing and experiencing it for yourself.

The explanation of the starry sky with a pointer was as clear as a planetarium. Fortunately, our guide had Japanese roots and was able to explain everything in Japanese. The lecture on altitude sickness was especially helpful.

It was a wonderful tour, filled with friendly interactions among the other members. Mahalo!

It was the best experience.
The tour was conducted entirely in English, but our guide James also mixed in some Japanese for casual conversation and explanations.
The tour started with a pickup at the Target parking lot at 1 PM, and from there, we headed to the Mauna Kea Onizuka Visitor Center in about 2 to 3 hours. After a restroom break, we finally made our way to the summit. Along the way, we stopped at the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) for some photo opportunities. We arrived at the summit before 6 PM, took some time to explore, and waited for the sunset around 6:30 PM. The view above the sea of clouds was truly magnificent during this time.
At 6:30 PM, the sunset was unobstructed and absolutely beautiful. The cirrus clouds were artistic, and I was glad to have participated.
We boarded the van before 7 PM to descend and stopped for about an hour to stargaze. We were able to see the Milky Way and the Summer Triangle. The explanation about the stars was helpful, and it was easy to see since there were no lights on the mountain.
After that, we descended in the van, took a restroom break at the Onizuka Visitor Center, returned to Kona, and disbanded at our respective drop-off locations around 10 PM.
As a solo traveler, I honestly debated between the Kilauea Volcano + stargazing tour due to financial and time considerations. However, I thought that the opportunity to see the sunset from the summit is something rare even in Japan, so I chose this tour, and it was definitely the right decision. (By the way, I visited Kilauea Volcano by car the next day.)
As a side note, the BLT sandwich was surprisingly delicious. I would love to have it again.
This tour became a valuable experience. Thank you, James.

ツアーとしては、13時にTarget（スーパーマーケット）の駐車場でピックアップがあり、そこから２，３時間ほどで、まずはマウナケア山のオニヅカ・ビジター・センターへ。お手洗休憩などを済ませ、いよいよ山頂へ。途中で、The Very Long Baseline Array （VLBA）などに立ち寄り、各自での写真撮影タイムもありました。山頂には18時前に到着し、しばらく散策し、18時半ごろの日の入りを待ちました。この間も雲海上の景色は本当に素晴らしかったです。
いよいよ18時半、日の入りは遮るものが何もなく、本当に綺麗でした。鱗雲も芸術的で、参加して良かったと思いました。
19時前にバンに乗り込み下山し、途中で１時間ほど星空観測をしました。天の川や夏の大三角も見れました。星空の解説もあり助かりました。山の途中で明かりがなかったのでよく見えました。
その後、バンで下山し、途中でオニヅカオニヅカ・ビジター・センターでお手洗休憩を済ませ、コナに戻り、22時頃に各自の解散場所にて解散という形です。
一人旅であり、正直、金銭面、時間面で、キラウエア火山+星空のツアーと迷いました。ただ、山頂で夕陽を見る機会なんて日本でも滅多に無いことだと思い、こちらを選びましたが、やはり正解でした。（なお、キラウエア火山には翌日車で行きました。）
余談ですが、BLTサンドイッチはビックリするほど美味しかったです。また食べたいと思いましました。
このツアーは貴重な経験になりました。James、ありがとうございました。

We departed from Kailua-Kona, and after a while, we encountered heavy rain. The weather wasn't great even when we entered Saddle Road. Since all participants were Japanese, it was initially assumed that the communication would be in English, but ultimately everything was conducted in Japanese. The Japanese staff made sure to accommodate only Japanese participants and were considerate right up until the last moment.

This time, I participated in the long-awaited Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing tour on the Big Island. There was a paid shuttle service to the hotel where I was staying, and we started from there. We headed from the Kona area to Waikoloa, picking up other guests along the way, aiming for the summit in a 12-passenger bus. Our guide was James. I was worried about how it would be to exceed 4000 meters for the first time. After a short break at the Onizuka Center and lunch, we had an exciting trial. We took photos in various poses as a group with the sunset in the background near the observatory. I felt truly alive on this planet.

A little further down, we saw the starry sky. Luckily, the Milky Way was clearly visible, and we were able to see Saturn through a telescope. Of course, we took photos as well.

The explanations were very helpful, mixed with some Japanese. You can also borrow warm clothing and gloves. The sandwiches for lunch were very delicious.

This is a lifelong memory. Thank you!

初の4000m超えでどうなるか心配でした。　オニヅカセンターでの小休止、ランチ後、ドキドキのトライアル。天文台近くでサンセットをバックにグループごとに色々なポーズで写真撮影してもらいました。地球に生きている事を実感しました。
少し下った所で、星空を見ました。ラッキーな事に天の川が鮮明に見え、天体望遠鏡で土星も見せてもらいました。もちろん写真撮影もありました。

This was my second time on the Big Island and my first time at Mauna Kea. My mother, who is 68 years old, was worried about altitude sickness, but thanks to our guide Shoutarou, we were able to enjoy the best sunset and starry sky at Mauna Kea without any issues. Thank you, Shoutarou! I had heard that our guide would be a foreigner, but he spoke Japanese fluently, which made me feel very relieved. However, I was disappointed by the manners of some participants in the same tour. Despite seeking more services, they got off the bus without even giving a tip (even though it was confirmed before the tour that the guide's service fee was separate) and hardly said goodbye. As a fellow Japanese person, I felt a bit uneasy about it. That wonderful tour was thanks to our guide.

ハワイ島2回目で初のマウナケア、母が68歳で高山病を心配していましたが、ガイドのしょうたろうさんのお掛けで高山病にならずに母とマウナケアで最高のサンセット&星空を見ることができました。その節はしょうたろうさんありがとうございました！外国の方のガイドさんと聞いていましたが、日本語ペラペラのガイドさんですごく安心しました。ただ残念だったのが同じツアーに参加していた方のマナーでした。より多くのサービスを求める割に帰りはチップすら渡さず(ガイドさんのサービス料は別途必要とツアー参加前に確認されたのに)に挨拶もろくにせずに下車されていました。同じ日本人としてなんかだかモヤモヤしました。ガイドさんあってのあの素晴らしいツアーだったはずなのに。

Even in summer, it’s cold at the summit, so I recommend putting on your inner layers by the Onizuka Center along the way. They provided rental down jackets and gloves for everyone. Also, headache medicine and motion sickness pills are essential.

The guide's explanations were excellent and interesting, allowing me to absorb a lot of the culture of the Big Island in just half a day. As we gained elevation, the ground turned reddish-brown, resembling Mars. I became quite excited, and when we got out of the car at over 4,000 meters, I felt some signs of altitude sickness, like heaviness in my body and head. However, since I was acclimatizing to the altitude, I had no issues with my condition and enjoyed the sunset for about an hour. The stargazing was also fantastic, as it was a new moon, and the Milky Way was vivid. I am very satisfied with the tour.

However, I noticed that there were too many people with low morals, such as those who did not adhere to the meeting time for altitude acclimatization (which is unacceptable for adults), sleeping in the car above the Onizuka (which is prohibited by law), and touching the Onizuka silver sword grass (even body heat can cause serious damage to alpine plants, and it is an endangered species). I believe the organizers should address these issues, and I hope for better management in the future.

ガイドさんの説明が上手で面白く、半日の間にハワイ島の文化をかなり吸収出来ました。標高が高くなるにつれて地表が赤茶色になり、火星のようでした。かなり興奮気味になり、4000メートルを超えて車を出ると若干高山病の兆候は感じました。身体と頭の重さです。ですが高地順応を経ているので体調は問題なく、小一時間夕日を満喫しました。星空観察も当日が新月にあたり、天の川が鮮明でした。ツアーについて大変満足しています。
しかし、高地順応の集合時間も守らない(大人で論外）、オニヅカよりも上で車中で寝る(法律で禁じられています）、オニヅカの銀剣草を触る(体温ですら高山植物にとっては深刻なダメージ、しかも絶滅危惧種)など、低モラルな人たちが多すぎるのが目に入りました。運営側が伝えるべきだと思うので、今後の運営に期待したいです。

I experienced the sunset and stargazing tour. It was one of those views I've always wanted to see at least once in my life. During the sunset, the view of the sea of clouds below, the setting sun, and the scenery that unfolded as time flowed slowly was amazing. The stargazing afterward, where I was able to enjoy the view before the moon rose, seemed to be a stroke of luck. It became another unforgettable sight.

Throughout the tour, the guide was kind and shared stories about Hawaii, making it a fun time. This time, it was lucky that all the participants were Japanese, so we had a completely Japanese-speaking guide.

サンセット&星空鑑賞ツアーを体験。人生で一度は見てみたいと思った景色の1つでした。サンセットでは、眼下に流れる雲海、沈んでいく太陽、ゆっくりと時間が流れていく中で見える景色は最高でした。その後の星空鑑賞、月が昇る前の時間帯で鑑賞することができたのは運が良かったようです。これまた忘れられない光景となりました。

ツアーを通してですが、ガイドさんは親切で道中もハワイのお話もしてくれ楽しい時間でした。今回はたまたま参加者が全員日本人だったので完全日本語ガイドとなったのもラッキーでした。
