We had kind of an unusual situation, as our hike down to the lava in the afternoon was canceled due to the directions of the winds, which were blowing toxic VOG inland. Instead, we ended up going to the crater for the second time that day, which actually turned out to be pretty cool, as the lava level had risen quite high.
Our AM guide was Angelique, who was really sweet and had a great deal of information about the flora/fauna in the area as well as having some really fun stories about Captain Cook and various other historical figures. She's clearly done her homework!
Campbell was our PM guide, and he's quite a character. He had a lot of great information to share about the various eruptions that have happened on the island and took us to a few places to see old lava flows. He's pretty new to the island and the tour, though, and it does sometimes show. I'd say, after he gets a little more experience under his belt, he'll be great. He's done quite a bit of research on his own, so he did have some good information debunking some common misconceptions on the origin of various species on the island.
We were pretty disappointed that our hike out to see the lava flow was canceled, but the owner was really great to work with, and let us jump into the hike the following day so we got to see it anyway! For that trip, Shawn was our guide, and he's a very experienced guide and seems to know every single person on the island, and shared some fun local trivia with us :). Sadly, the lava wasn't flowing as strongly as it had been in previous weeks so we saw more spurts than flows, but it was still REALLY cool.
The hike down wasn't as strenuous as I was expecting, they've actually bulldozed the road so it's more like a gravel road than hiking across lava as I was (for some reason) expecting, and there weren't any inclines/declines. They are able to park further into the park than the public, though, the hike was cut down to a 3 mile hike round trip.

Crossing the river was a lot of fun, and our family is already talking about coming back here on our next trip to Hawaii Island. I'm really glad we participated—highly recommended!

We participated as a three-generation group, from ages 9 to 60s.
There were plenty of boots, helmets, and jackets available, and everyone borrowed them.
The explanations were in English, but the instructor spoke very clearly, making it easy to understand, and they spoke slowly enough that I could convey the information to the children as well. They also engaged with us during the ride, and when the horses didn’t listen, the staff at the front and back of the line helped out. As a beginner, I felt safe and had a great time.
It took just under an hour for all participants to get equipped and mount the horses, but after that, we rode for about 1 hour and 40 minutes, going up hills and visiting a cattle pasture. We finished around noon after the morning gathering.
The children seemed to have a lot of fun and are already talking about "next time being 2 and a half hours!"

We participated with two adults and two children for our first horseback riding experience. We took a four-wheel drive microbus down to the bottom of Waipi'o Valley from the meeting point. The guide provided explanations in English, but it's okay if you can't catch everything. The stunning views of the valley and the movement of the vehicle going down the steep slope felt like a little attraction, which was enjoyable. Upon arrival, the guide explained how to ride the horses in English and some broken Japanese. Although I felt a bit anxious, I could understand somewhat through gestures, and the horses were well-trained, so we could ride without any issues. After that, we rode in a line through the valley, passing taro fields and waterfalls. As we got more comfortable, it felt like we were able to control the horses ourselves, making it a very enjoyable experience. While it might be a bit lacking for experienced riders, our family, who are all beginners, was completely satisfied with the experience.
Additional notes:
- We drove from Kailua-Kona by rental car, which took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The local office is also in a somewhat difficult-to-find location, so I recommend allowing extra time for travel.
- If you bring a camera, the guide can take photos for you along the way.
- The guide will say "right, left, pull, kick" in Japanese when necessary, so it's fine even for children who don't understand English. (According to them)

This was by far the coolest thing I ever done in my life. Nothing compares to see an active volcano and watch the power of creation right before you eyes.
Excellent service from start to finish. The vehicles are clean and comfortable. The food was substantial for the duration of the tour. For lunch we had an nice picnic lunch at Volcanoes National Park with delicious deli-sandwiches. For dinner we stopped at a local restaurant in Pahoa town with good options for everyone. Inside the van they also carry a cooler and a basket full of snacks and drinks.
The guides were professionals, punctual, courteous and knowledgeable.
Amanda did a wonderful job of blending geography, history and culture. We learned about the flora and fauna native to the area, as well as plants and animals brought to the island. We also learned about the past and recent eruptions.
Inside the Volcanoes National Park we visited Jagger museum and Halema’uma’u Crater. We also had fun seeing the steam vents. The Iki Crater Trail is a nice and easy hike through the rainforest and after that we walked through Thurston Lava Tube.
After leaving the park we drove by Pahoa Town and I was very impressed to see how close the lava flow got to this little town in 2015 / 2016. We had dinner and then we drove to Kalapana for the best part of the day.
Nui Pohaku offers the shortest hike to the viewing point where the lava is flowing to the ocean. it was an easy 30 to 40 min walk until the end of the trail. Walking right next to the lava fields was an amazing experience and witness the explosive power of the volcano pouring lava to the ocean was unbelievable.
As the sun sets the colors change and you see the eruption getting crazy bright shades of orange, red and yellow. Once the sun is down they give you flashlights to help the hike back tot he car and we were blessed with an awesome stargazing.
Everything was as promised...and better!

All four of us in the family experienced horseback riding for the first time. We didn't fully understand English, but everyone had an amazing time! The horses were well-trained, and my 12-year-old daughter said she "wasn't scared at all." We crossed the river several times, which was fun. There was a pleasant breeze, the scenery was beautiful, and the riding time was just right—it was a very satisfying experience. Helmets are available to borrow, and you can also rent bags to keep your wallet and camera in. The weather was nice, so short sleeves were perfect. There were no bugs. I highly recommend it!

This was truly a magical day in Hawaii. Waipio Valley is one of those places best seen through the eyes of someone local. This is not merely a tour, but more of an invitation to visit the valley as a guest and get the grand tour from people who truly love it and want you to as well. The horses are happy, healthy, well cared for individuals with personalities and this trail ride is not the dull, narrated nose to tail variety often found in tourist areas. You won't have a "canned" speech and your horses won't be falling asleep from having done a monotonous walk they have done a million times with no hope of change. We left feeling like we really learned a lot from our hosts, who live in the valley, love and know it well, while having seen some of the most spectacular scenery on the island. The snapshot of the view from the lookout point is certainly gorgeous, but go the extra mile and take a ride into the valley to see the taro, the waterfalls, the wild horses, the freshwater streams and amazing landscape. You won't be disappointed!

The instructions before riding are only in English, but there is a description in Japanese in front of the stable. The application form was in Japanese.
We rode for about two and a half hours through the valley, seeing taro fields, rivers, and waterfalls. The scenery was very pleasant. I would definitely like to participate again.
We are not very good at English, so we asked the hotel concierge to confirm our reservation. It can be confusing to navigate to the site by rental car.
After reaching the Waipi'o Lookout, if you return along the left side of the road, you will arrive at the shop.

During my trip between Oahu and the Big Island, I was torn between horseback riding at Kualoa Ranch or Waipi'o Valley, but to cut to the chase, I made the right choice by going horseback riding here.
The first half of the experience, taking a 4WD bus down to the valley where the horses are, was incredibly enjoyable. Although I'm not great at English, the instructors seemed accustomed to Japanese speakers and taught us how to ride in a way that was easy to understand, even without grasping the language.
The horseback riding course allowed us to fully enjoy the magnificent nature unique to the Big Island. We crossed streams multiple times, and it was adorable to see the horse I was riding stop to drink water or nibble on grass along the way. If you pull on the reins, the horse will start walking, and I felt safe riding a well-trained horse. At the scenic spots, the staff kindly took photos of us while we were on horseback.

I believe that those with even a little bit of horseback riding experience will enjoy both the scenery and the riding more than complete beginners.
Both instructors were kind, and I was happy to give them tips.

I chose the course at Cahuilla Ranch because I wanted to ride freely in a spacious area, and it was a great decision. Perhaps because it was the off-season, we unexpectedly had a private tour with just the instructor and my husband and me. Under the guidance of a beautiful and slender instructor, we strolled through the vast ranch, controlling the horse ourselves instead of being led. Everything was in English, but she explained everything very slowly and carefully, and she repeated important points multiple times, so I had no worries at all. The horses are very well-trained, almost smarter than humans. The attending instructor ensures customer safety while allowing us to ride quite freely according to our wishes and skill levels, so if you have some riding experience, you can have the best experience in this vast ranch with its elevation changes. There is no pick-up service, but it's easy to find if you go by rental car, as it's not a confusing location and there are signs. The prices are reasonable, and I highly recommend it as an optional tour.

I think this is my fifth time participating in this tour. Even those without horseback riding experience can join without any issues. You simply proceed slowly in a line through the valley, so you can participate with peace of mind. If possible, I recommend the morning tour as it allows for more time.
Wild Mustangs come close to the herd along the way. It's interesting to see how horses have their likes and dislikes. I believe first-timers will have a very satisfying experience.
While Waipi'o Valley can be viewed from above, you can get a better sense of it by going down. Recently, Japanese documents have also been prepared, so even though the guide doesn't understand Japanese, it’s not a particular problem.

We participated as a couple. It was just before a Japanese interpreter started working, but I heard they will be available here, so I think it will be fine for those who don't understand English if they request an interpreter. The participants ranged from children to adults. There were even families from the mainland U.S. participating together across three generations (from grandparents to grandchildren), so I believe people of all ages can enjoy it.
The first zip line was a bit scary because it was my first time and it was high, but after that, I had a lot of fun. I'm not very good with heights, but I managed. Due to the season, it had been rainy and chilly, making ocean activities impossible, but trying mountain activities during that time was very enjoyable.

Aloha Lilly, We were glad that we were able to accommodate you on a second night. That was the first time that Hawaii Civil Defense blocked the lava viewing area since we have been hiking out via this shorter distance and it was a disappointment, but unfortunately, we can argue with the big guys. :) It is a major safety issue if the south winds are blowing strongly enough to have the SO2 gasses go directly into guests faces. We are glad that you enjoyed the overall experience and we hope that you will be able to visit the islands once again! Thank you for taking the time to write a lovely review and we will be sure to pass on your kind words to our guides. Mahalo!!
