Big Island
Thank you!!! What a phenomenal experience for my 10 yr old son! He LOVED it!
Mahalo for joining us!
It was our 2nd time at the summit after 14 years with your company and we were more concerned about the summit weather due to last time it was so windy and cold to stay outside of the car.
But, the weather this time thanks to god it was good to watch the sunset.
Our driver was so nice was caring, professional skill of guiding and a gentleman.
He was caring everyone.
This made our trip OUTSTANDING.
I would recommend this trip to anyone eligible it is good tour with a Mercedes 4WD van with 14 passengers.
Mantas can be seen in other countries as well, but the encounter rate on the Big Island of Hawaii is overwhelmingly high, so I definitely recommend experiencing it. During the session I participated in, several large mantas swam right in front of me, providing a truly valuable experience. The Japanese-speaking guide was very attentive, making it a reassuring tour.
For those who will be participating:
- The boat will speed towards the destination for a while, and it can be quite bumpy. If you're worried about seasickness, it's recommended to take motion sickness medication before joining.
- It gets chilly after coming out of the water. Bringing a large towel can be useful as it can also serve as a wrap.
- Since it's a popular tour, seats can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to keep your belongings to a minimum (if you don't want to place them on the floor). A waterproof bag is recommended as a lot of seawater comes into the boat.
- There is only one Japanese-speaking guide, and of course, they won't be able to provide individual attention to everyone. Especially for beginners in snorkeling, it's safer to familiarize yourself with how to wear the snorkel, how to fit it, how to put on a wetsuit, and how to enter the water beforehand.
Aloha En,
Thank you for participating in the Manta University. I apologize for the delay in my response since the tour date. It truly is a rare experience to see wild mantas up close on the Big Island. I also appreciate your comments regarding the Japanese guide. Thank you for sharing valuable information about motion sickness medication, cold weather measures, waterproofing, and snorkeling. We hope you will come back to re-enroll in the Dolphin School the next time you are in Hawaii! Our crew is looking forward to welcoming you back. Mahalo nui and A hui hou!
Mahalo nui and A hui hou!
Turned out to be a perfect day and the crew were fabulous.
100% would do again
The location, the food, and entertainment was amazing. Truly worth your time and money for this experience. Would go again. My family enjoyed this. The breeze off the water felt heavenly. Go you will not regret it.
This tour was absolutely amazing! I would book this again in a heartbeat. The staff was great. The ride was great. The food was great. The drinks were great. I honestly can’t say great enough. They highly exceeded our expectations!
An experience like we never had before, the manta rays are gentle giants and the boat guides made our tour even more easy!
A bit smaller than past luaus, but was right oceanside and staff really put it all out there for the show!
This was a local tour on the Big Island of Hawaii. The original plan was to drive to the summit (4,200 meters) to watch the sunset, and then observe the stars in the night sky at another location.
However, at the visitor center (2,800 meters), the area was covered in clouds, and the road was closed, preventing us from reaching the summit. I had heard that the summit of Mauna Kea is above the clouds and has low weather risks, but I realized there is a risk of road closures along the way.
After that, we were able to observe the stars from a lower area (1,800 meters). We could see Saturn, and the night sky was magnificent.
Mahalo for your review. We appreciate your feedback and are pleased you were able to stargaze and see Saturn! We look forward to hosting you in the future.
You can borrow winter clothing, but it is very cold. Wear long pants and sneakers. However, during sightseeing until sunset, you will be walking, seeing waterfalls, and entering caves, so it can get hot and you might sweat. Drinks are also available.
Wonderful private charter experience. Captain Michael and Gretchen were wonderful - and so attentive. I highly recommend this company - one of the best experiences on the Big Island - don’t miss it.
God’s amazing creativity seen through volcanic activity and celestial bodies. Truly an experience you won’t forget. Maka was the best. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Be forewarned that if you have altitude problems, you may fell icky at the summit. Take it slowly. You’ll fell better when you descend.
6 members all different ages had so much fun and felt more comfortable then expected in the ocean during evening!
The Kona sunsets are beyond words! A great anniversary memory
Happy Anniversary!
Thank you for joining us and your kind words!
Smaller than luaus we have seen on other islands, but that did not take away from the love the crew puts into it!
Great crew and good food/drinks helped set the mood on the open water. Very understanding of our young kids and spilled drinks haha. We only had one other party on our cruise too which was nice to not be crowded. Would book again!
I'm embarrassed to say that I balked a little at first at the cost of this tour. Let me tell you, 15 minutes into the tour it felt like a total bargain.
The van was super comfortable and clean. We were running a little late and the tour guide called us to make sure we were going to make it. He was kind and understanding.
Our guide's make was Kea. He was the best guide of any tour I've taken in thirty years. So much local knowledge, and very generous with his experience and expertise. He made everyone on the trip feel like an individual. Also, he's hilarious.
The stargazing was simply mind blowing. It was like looking into deep space for nearly two hours. We lost count is the shooting stars after 15.
Kea was also very knowledgeable about the stars and the telescope we used was amazing. We saw nebulas, globular clusters, binary stars, and more.
After a long day, full bellies, and stargazing it was a real relief to have someone else driving us down the dark mountain.
I'll wrap things up by thanking our guide one more time. The quality of this tour really felt like it came from the quality of the person who shared his knowledge with us.
The staff speaks entirely in English, so I feel that listening skills in English are necessary. However, that also gives a sense of being in Hawaii, which is okay.
The snorkeling points are indeed beautiful, but I expected them to be clearer. Still, I think first-time snorkelers would be satisfied. It might be that the sea was rough due to rain the day before. I feel that the clarity of the sea increases when the sunny days continue.
There is plenty of time for snorkeling, and families with children can enjoy it a lot. There are also plenty of floatation devices, so kids can focus on snorkeling without the risk of drowning, which is reassuring.
The staff's service is perfect. Their response makes you want to give a tip. The meals on the boat are made with healthy ingredients, so I felt safe eating them. The operation was such that it was hard to get seasick.
I participated with my husband, who uses a wheelchair, and our sons, who are in fifth and second grade. The deciding factor for us to sign up was the large boat that allows wheelchair access. Since I used to dive a lot during my student days, I wanted my children to experience snorkeling and dolphin watching at accessible points by boat, but it was quite challenging with a wheelchair. I was very happy that we could go this way.
However, the meeting time was early in the morning, and we had to leave the hotel by 6 AM to drive from Waikoloa, which made my sons look sleepy the whole time. That was a bit disappointing. Still, the snorkel, mask, and fins we borrowed were comfortable, and despite it being their first time snorkeling in open water, they weren't scared at all and had a lot of fun. They also loved the noodle, a long floating device. (My husband wasn't feeling well and didn't snorkel, so I'm not sure if he would have supported them if they had wanted to.)
The kids wore life vests, and I only had the noodle, but it was enough to keep me afloat. The fish at the snorkeling spot were honestly fewer in variety compared to places like Okinawa, but I think it was a good experience for the kids' first time.
We also saw dolphins on the way there! We had breakfast (a variety of breads, fruits, and yogurt) before snorkeling, and during the snorkeling time, we could come up whenever we wanted to eat the hamburgers for lunch. The taro chips served at lunch were a favorite of the kids.
On the way back, we had a longer cruise away from the coast to look for big animals (dolphins, whales, mantas, etc.). Unfortunately, we didn't encounter any, but the cookies they handed out during that time were delicious, and my younger son asked for seconds.
It was a half-day tour, but it became a very enjoyable memory! If I could wish for something, I think a tour with a later meeting time and just lunch would be better. By the way, my children and I took motion sickness medication, so we didn't get seasick. My husband seemed a bit unwell, so I recommend taking motion sickness medication just in case, even for those who usually don't get seasick!
Thank you for joining us! We wish you the very best!
I was worried about the high prices due to the weak yen, but I chose this plan because it has Japanese staff and allows participation for elderly people as well. I confirmed the days when Japanese staff would be on board in advance on the official Manta University website before making my reservation. The day before, about 20 mantas showed up, but on the day of our participation, there were only 3 or 4. However, the sight of them opening their mouths wide and doing flips up close was a wonderful experience that you can't have in other regions. The Japanese staff provided excellent support, and I was grateful that they shared the manta images taken with the GoPro. However, it seems that participating as an observer didn't have much meaning, so it might be fine to wait at the hotel instead (I'm not sure if waiting at the store is possible, but I wouldn't recommend it since it would be unattended). We used Uber for the round trip, but on the return, we waited about 20 minutes in the darkness, with only the faint light from the store reaching us. If you can tolerate that, there were no problems at all. Depending on the location of the hotel, plans with transportation can be quite expensive. By the way, we were the only ones using Uber.
Aloha! Thank you for participating in Manta University. We appreciate you choosing Manta University during this time of yen depreciation. We're glad to hear that you reserved a day when a Japanese guide was on board, allowing you to experience your encounter with the manta rays with peace of mind. If you have the opportunity to visit Hawaii again, please come and see us! The entire crew is looking forward to welcoming you. Mahalo nui and a hui hou!
Aloha!
Mahalo nui and a hou hou!
At 6:15 PM, we gathered at the harbor. The only restroom available is a nearby public toilet, which is not very clean. We boarded the boat and headed to a nearby point. There will be a briefing on the boat, but I think it will be manageable even if you don't understand English. It takes about fifteen minutes to reach the point. They provide masks and snorkels, but they are not prescription, so I recommend that those with poor eyesight bring their own masks. We descend into the sea from the back of the boat. Holding a buoy about a meter long, we swim to a metal bar fixed on the surface. There, we place the buoy on the tops of our feet and hold onto the metal bar to float parallel to the water's surface. Looking down, you can see the light shining downwards. After a while, a manta ray swims up towards the surface. It feels like it's coming right at you, which is quite impressive. However, some people might feel scared as the manta approaches in the dark. Small children might be frightened. We maintain this position for about an hour. I felt that twenty minutes was enough for me at first. The remaining forty minutes felt quite long. After floating on the surface for about an hour, we returned to the boat, used the restroom on board, and had a drink before disembarking. I think we disembarked just after 8 PM. It takes about an hour to return to Waikoloa from there, so we would get back to Waikoloa before 10 PM, and I think the driver will be quite tired. Still, I was satisfied with the impressive manta rays.
We were the only Asian participants.
You will receive an email asking for signatures regarding participation in advance, so make sure to fill it out for all participants. We attended as a pair, but I forgot to fill out one person's information, so we had to do it on the day of the event.
Also, at the meeting point, it seems that another tour group gathers at the same time, so it's safer to confirm that you are in the right group. (At first, we went to where people were gathering, and since our names weren't called, we confirmed and found out it was a different tour.)
It was okay not to speak English. I couldn't catch most of what was said because it was fast, but the staff were cheerful and kind, so it worked out.
Sunscreen is available on the ship, so it's fine if you forget it. You shouldn't expect much from breakfast. The cookies were very delicious.
The service was good, but the sea wasn't as beautiful as I expected, so I give it 4 stars.
Wow! What an amazing experience. We were so glad we took this tour instead of attempting this ourselves. It was beyond our wildest dreams, like leaving earth and visiting Mars. Just incredible. Our tour guide, Arthur, was extremely knowledgeable. We all learned a tin from him through the tour. I highly recommend him.
The food was from a local restaurant and was delicious. The bus was comfortable and I would not have wanted to drive to the summit in a rental car. That alone was worth the rate.
Also, Parkas and gloves were provided and they were super nice and warm. This tour was by far thi highlight of our trip to Hawaii. Do not hesitate. The experience is incredible and better than we could have possibly imagined. Not to be missed. And...it's cheap when you consider the quality I'd the experience. We LOVED it.
Scheduled this event as a large group visiting HI for the first time. We all had a blast. The boat ride to the snorkeling locations was fun. We saw a lot of fish and a few sea turtles. The waters are choppy, so if your prone to motion sickness, come prepared. All snorkel gear was provided. Overall, a fun experience.
The staff was fun and kept us all in good spirits!
Not everyone in my party was comfortable in the water but the staff came around and kept checking on them until they relaxed.
The sight of the Mantas was unbelievable!!!
Thanks Iruka!!!!
It was an amazing experience on the 5 hour tour with SeaQuest. We got to see a lot of diverse marine life while snorkeling in the reefs and got a tour of the lava tubes and caves along the way. Would highly recommend! Our guide and crew were great.
I love dolphins and was thinking about them all the time, but I found out just before my trip to Hawaii that I could see manta rays, and I really wanted to see them! So, I made a reservation.
My father has difficulty seeing, and since it was at night, I was very worried. However, thanks to the person who corresponded with me via email beforehand and especially the support from Tamae on the day of the tour, my family, including my father, had an unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever.
From the moment I peered into the water, manta rays came to us in droves, and I was so excited! I was mesmerized by their graceful swimming. After the tour ended, our family couldn't stop talking about the manta rays.
I also can't forget the sunset we saw from the boat and the magical sky when I turned around while watching the manta rays.
There were many worries, but they provided solid support, so I hope those who are anxious will definitely consider joining.
I'm sure a wonderful experience awaits you!!!♡

Mahalo nui, and a hui hou!!
This experience was perfect. The snorkeling over the coral and the incredible variety of fish was nothing short of amazing! That said my 18 and 13 year olds grew tried of it (sigh ) and chose to jump from the different levels of the boat into the water. (The highest level really is quite high!) The excursion was long enough for them to get tires of that and go back out for more snorkeling! The guides were great too. They provided some history behind what we were seeing ranging from the local traditions to the arrival of Captain Cook.
I couldn't recommend this trip more!!
I visited two places. The first beach didn't have many fish and the water was cold, so it might be fine to just go to one place. The second spot, Kealakekua Bay, had both coral and fish, which was great. The food was good too. The water temperature was higher here, so I think it would have been difficult if it were the other way around.
We participated as a family of three, including our third-grade daughter. Since we were staying in the Waikoloa area, we drove to the meeting point in a rental car. It was quite a distance (about 40 to 50 minutes), but we enjoyed the drive. Along the way, we spotted some wild goats, which delighted our child.
The boat was quite rocky, but it seemed that no one was seasick. However, for those who are worried about seasickness, I recommend taking some medication beforehand. There were only two other Japanese families besides us among the participants, with the rest being Korean and Westerners. The staff only spoke English, but they provided a written notice in Japanese, so as long as you can speak a little English, it shouldn't be a problem.
The boat had two slides, which our daughter was really looking forward to, but we were surprised when we arrived! The slide's starting point was on the second floor of the boat, and the end of the slide was about three meters above the water surface, so it felt like you were almost falling into the sea. I was too scared to try it myself.
You can also dive or jump off the boat, which can be done from both the second and first floors. Snorkels and fins are available for rent, as well as life jackets or something like floaties. Since it was our daughter's first time snorkeling, she initially borrowed a bodyboard with a bottom window. As she got used to the water, she expressed a desire to try snorkeling on her own, so we rented a tube float, a child-sized snorkel, and fins, and enjoyed snorkeling together.
There was also a small child, about two years old, enjoying the sea on a board, so I think people of a wide range of ages can enjoy this activity. On the way back, snacks were provided. The snacks included taro chips and cut pineapple, and drinks included water, but for those who wanted, soft drinks could be purchased for one dollar, and alcoholic drinks were also available for a price I can't remember.
