There was no sailing on this trip.The Manta rays are close to where the boat goes in the water. I thought we would have a nice sail while the sun was setting and then get in the water but that was not the case. This experience was both boring and exciting. You are in the water for 45 minutes lying flat with arms outstretched holding onto the handle on one of several connected "light boards"while you have your snorkeled face in the water, and are balancing a noodle under your ankles. You brush up against the people on either side of you.The motion of the ocean gets to be a bit much for many people. I heard a crew member say to another "at least no one puked this trip". I have never been sea sick but started feeling queasy and did get out with about 10 minutes to go. You can raise your arm and be escorted back to the boat at any time.You are provided with a half wet suit but still you get chilled. If you have any shoulder problems I would think twice about doing this trip. All that being said it was so cool when the Mantas did show up and swim right past you! There weren't many but I got some good video and stills with a camera that I borrowed from a friend. Maybe there is a better time of day or year to see more mantas? If you're positioned on a middle light board you have time to get the camera set because you will hear the people at the ends of the the light boards ooh and aah and cheer! I probably would not do this trip again but notice I didn't say never! The boat was nice , the crew was fine.

Ocean Encounters Manta Ray Snorkel Tour - Sunset & Moonlight Cruise from Kona

This is an amazing experience and it's so easy, you barely need to know how to swim. You just lay w/ your face in the water and the mantas come to you. Actually they come to feed on plankton which are attracted by the lights that the crew shine in the water. It's a super-cool experience and the crew on our boat were awesome. Highly recommended.

As a parent of 7 year old twins, who seeks out kid friendly activities, I’m so grateful I chose this show. This was their first show since COVID. They offered a selection of kid friendly food which I appreciated. The rest of the food was amazing and the drinks were delicious! Now to the entertainment. This group of performers were so enthusiastic that the captured my kids attention the whole time. The story they told was beautiful. My kids were doing their best to follow the dancers moves and the waitstaff were so kind to compliment them. The fire dancer at the end got a standing ovation! From the music and performers to the food and staff, they all exceeded any expectations! Well done!

Where are the whales?

I have been on a whale watching tour in the past and the captain took us directly to where the whales were and we were so close and able to get great pictures for the entire tour. That was not the case here; we were constantly looking for whales and all we ever saw was the “blow” and some splashing from quite a distance. It was very disappointing. I would think these guys would know where to go since they do this everyday. We were in the boat for several hours and never saw anything to identify this as a good trip! I would have expected them to take us somewhere to see the whales, we seemed to hang out in the same area just hoping a whale would show up!
The boat was very nice and the people were nice too but the whales were missing!! This was the beginning of February, isn’t that the best time?

We got to see lots of whales. We saw whales breach & fin slap. We saw a baby calf very closely & she looked right at us. Then, the calf swam under our boat as the mom followed & then the huge escort male whale followed. Definitely was a trip to remember! Both the captain Chuck & lifeguard aboard were excited to see the whales & were very excited to share their knowledge! Our captain took us north away from all of the other boats. Which made us feel very connected to the whales & not like tourists.

I heard that you can see almost 100% of them, and I really did! However, dolphins are incredibly fast! Haha. It's obvious, but they are super quick, and I had a hard time taking pictures! So, I recommend using a GoPro or something to record videos and then cutting clips from those!

It was a unique experience. Rich, our tour guide was very informative. We learned a lot about the history of the island of Hawaii as he drove us to different must see locations like the cave, water falls, historic sites. We also learned about plants, volcanoes, fissures, and stars in a day! We saw nebula, galaxies, a couple of satellites, shooting stars and learned about so many other stars in our constellation! It was very educational! Really appreciated it a lot!

They charged my phone for me while we went out, because my battery was almost dead. Came back and had 74%. We participated as a mother-daughter duo with no snorkeling experience. My mother is in her 60s. Initially, we joined with the mindset that just seeing dolphins from the boat would be enough, but once we set off, we were encouraged by our guide to go into the water. My mother, who can hardly swim, used a float, but the guide skillfully led us, and she was incredibly moved to see the dolphins from the best spot. I was impressed by the professionalism of the guide. Not only was the encounter rate with dolphins high, but the guide also kept track of the participants' names and how much they were enjoying themselves, even while wearing snorkeling gear. This was amidst many other tours. It was truly amazing. Although it was more active than other tours, the love for dolphins from our guide shone through. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves dolphins.

当初は船の上からイルカを観れるだけでもという気持ちで参加しましたが、いざ出発するとガイドの方の勢いに後押しされ海の中へ。ろくに泳げない母は浮を借りながらですが、ガイドさんがしっかりと誘導してくれたので一番の特等席でイルカを観られたと大変感動していました。ガイドさんのプロの仕事はこういうものか。と感銘を受けました。イルカとの遭遇率のみならず、シュノーケリングを着けた上からでもツアー参加者の名前と楽しめているかをしっかりと把握してくれます。他ツアーが沢山入り混じる中でです。本当に凄い。他のツアーよりもアクティブでしたが、イルカを愛するガイドさんの愛が伝わってきました。イルカ好きには何度でもおすすめ出来ます。

I saw a manta tour on a TV program about the Big Island of Hawaii. After seeing those impressive scenes, I thought I would definitely join a manta tour when I visited the Big Island. This time, I was greeted by a Japanese woman who provided clear guidance. The manta tour instructor was a handsome half-Japanese guy who spoke a mix of Gifu and Nagoya dialects. (He mentioned that his mother is from Nagoya and he lived in Japan until elementary school.) We took quite a boat ride from the port to the manta point, but we were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset along the way. Once we arrived at the point, we quickly put on our masks and snorkels and jumped into the sea. Holding onto a square rubber boat about the size of two tatami mats, I peered into the water and saw small fish gathering around the light. After waiting for a while, a manta appeared at the seabed about 10 meters deep. The manta swam into the light, allowing us to see it well. After that, one or two more mantas passed by. One manta even swam close to our boat, and I was moved by its impressive presence. Even in Hawaii, March can be a bit chilly, so a wetsuit was necessary.

Honestly, I only saw the manta rays twice, and both times they were far away for just a moment. There were no close encounters where they were feeding right in front of me, as described in the tour details. It seems that the weather on the day can also affect this, and since manta rays are natural creatures, it's not guaranteed that you'll see them every time.

Since I didn't see them, I was really grateful for the policy that allows a free retry next time.

Although I didn't see the manta rays, I was lucky enough to spot dolphins from the boat. They jumped and swam close to us, which was really fortunate. I definitely want to try for the manta rays again next time.

I was able to see manta rays safely!
Two large manta rays came right under the light, and I was so excited!
Their swirling movements were very beautiful.
I was surprised when the underside of the manta touched my hand; it felt rough.

We participated as a family of three. I was worried about getting seasick, but I took some motion sickness medication before heading out. The captain and the crew were so cheerful, it really felt like a party on the boat! The pleasant breeze and splashes of waves lifted my spirits, and before I knew it, I had forgotten all about my seasickness. The sunset was also incredibly beautiful! We saw manta rays swim by about five times, and they even showed us their turns, which was truly moving! I absolutely recommend this tour! On the way back, the wind can be chilly on your wet body, so it's a good idea to bring something to wear.

Unfortunately, we couldn't see any whales, but it was still an enjoyable cruise as we admired the majestic Big Island from the sea, passed by the luxury cruise ship anchored off the coast of Kona, and searched for the coffee farm we visited the day before. I appreciated the guide who passionately continued to explain about the whales and marine life in Hawaii in English.

The captain and crew were super relaxed and funny, and the small size of the boat allowed for a sense of camaraderie and fun, as we zoomed through the water at high speeds (make sure to hold on!). Loved this intimate experience rather than some big show boat with a ton of people onboard.
