Maui
When we arrived at the pier, we signed in at a designated area (there were some materials in Japanese, see photo 1) and enjoyed a cup of coffee. Before boarding the Pride of Maui, we took a commemorative photo (you don't have to buy it for $20). After boarding, breakfast included strawberries, pineapple, bread, cake, and drinks (see photos 2 and 3). The strawberries were huge like Amaou, and the pineapple was sweet. On a tour I took a few years ago, there were only snorkel sets and fins, and I was quite scared in the deep waters of Molokini, so this time I brought a simple life jacket from Japan. On this tour, there were life jackets (see photo 7), of course, a long pole to use under the armpits (see photo 4), a wetsuit (see photo 5), and a belly wrap (see photo 6), so you could participate with just your body. There were also paid options for snuba (see photo 8) and rental underwater cameras (see photo 9).
Lunch consisted of hamburgers, with ketchup on the bread and vegetables on top, and you could choose from the grilled items at the stern of the boat (cheese on top of hamburgers, teriyaki chicken, and large sausages). They recommended the cheeseburger, but I had the chicken burger, which was quite tasty. Those who could still eat were allowed to line up again after everyone finished, and there were about 15 servings left over. If you don't line up for meals at the beginning, the waiting time can be long, but our Japanese guide, Sato-san, kindly took care of various needs for the Japanese guests. Although there were many foreigners on the tour, there was no need to worry; this tour is the best for Molokini. Before returning to the port, we were given a rice cracker. Sato-san (see photo 10) helped my wife when she was struggling while feeding fish in the water. I also received help from a foreign guy who was monitoring on a surfboard; without him, I would have been in double trouble. Since there are paid options, it's good to bring some money, and the only places to put your belongings are under your seat, which can get wet. I think it's better to bring a waterproof bag just in case. We were able to see turtles floating in the sea, and we got quite close to Molokini. However, you need to be careful as the current flows towards Molokini, which could lead to hitting the island or stepping on coral. I rated it as good because we didn't encounter any whales and there weren't small fish like in Hanauma Bay.
Departing from the far right dock at Lahaina Harbor. There is no parking at the dock, so I recommend the free public parking located to the north. The boat is comfortable, and we even spotted something that looked like a whale. Once we arrive at Lanai Island, there is a bus that goes to the Four Seasons. The beach is peaceful and highly recommended. I think it's a great idea to take a little trip there during your stay in Maui.
We had a great time whale watching! The crew made all the difference. They were very knowledgeable about whales. From serving food and drinks to taking pictures so we could just enjoy the whales, it was great. So good, since they had openings, we went on the next trip!
We will see them next year for our whale watching trip!
What an amazing trip! you will not be disappointed! Diane picked us up at our Condominium and we picked up other passengers and went to have a continental breakfast. While at the home base, they give you extra layers of coats, ear muffs, and gloves to wear. We were prepared and had our heavy winter coats, but took these extra provisions just in case. I was so glad that we did! It was awesome to layer up as it is very cold before sunrise at the top and you do stand out in the cold as the sun begins its ascent.
One of the other guides or park rangers performed a chant as the sun rose which was very special.
Our Guide Diane was really great! So cheerful and personable the entire time. She drove safely up and down the mountain (we were SO glad we chose to do the tour instead of attempting to drive it ourselves). Diane peppered the journey with insightful facts and history. We learned so much about the history of Maui, culture of Hawaii, indigenous and protected species, and so much more! Truly a joy!
After sunrise, we also went up to the Summit, then stopped at several places on the way back down the mountain for sight seeing before heading to Breakfast. The Hot Chocolate was the best I have ever had! Great food!
Could not be more thrilled with this tour! Highly recommended
Great tour at a reasonable considering the ferry was included. We maybe didn't get our full value but only because of the rain. The tour guide was great and tried hard and did well to make up for the weather.
The overall trip was great. The snorkeling was fun but crowded. Snorkeling to see turtles was fun and I am happy we got to see them but they are not guaranteed.
The boat and crew were perfect. Not overcrowded. The food was top notch. The drinks were top shelf and the crew was at the top of their game. Sunsets are a crap shoot in Hawaii. This night it was perfect. Just the right mix of clouds and sea. A mother Humpback whale and her new calf graced us with their presence. This was a perfect storm or wonderful. Thank you Ali'i Nui and mother nature for a once in a lifetime experience.
The boat was a catamaran. Since we boarded right up to the beach, you should be prepared to get wet. There were no Japanese staff, but we managed just fine. Even though I thought of whales as wild animals, my expectations were high! When a whale came close, it was so exciting. Finally seeing a whale was a dream come true! Thank you for showing up. There were some snacks available, but we were so focused on the whales. The sea conditions were calm that day, with clear skies and little wind, so the conditions were quite good. I think our family was lucky. The next day when we went to the beach, the waves were really strong, and it looked like getting on the boat would be even more difficult. After all, dealing with nature, the weather, sea conditions, and the appearance of the whales, I can only feel gratitude. I will never forget the whales that our whole family got to see.
Meeting up on-site was nerve-wracking, but when we found the boat at the port, I felt a sense of relief and excitement as if the tour had already begun. A Japanese staff member found our family, and we boarded safely. By the way, we were the only Japanese family there. The female staff member was very kind to us.
Since it was early in the morning, breakfast was included on the boat! There was a generous amount of food available. There were also various drinks. Japanese people tend to be reserved, but it felt like we should confidently go for the food and drinks. We enjoyed a hearty lunch as well. It was delicious.
What impressed me was the sunscreen! It was available in bottles for free use, and it was eco-friendly for the ocean and coral! That's quite rare. The atmosphere on the boat was fantastic, with music playing all the time. It was fun.
Snorkeling was the highlight, as we got to see fish and turtles in the clear water while playing with the kids. Moreover, while free diving, we could actually hear the sound of whales! It was clear! On the way back to the port, we encountered whales due to the season, making it a dream-like day.
This is a whale watch worth signing up for. The Captain is an utter delight, and her crew were outstanding! The atmosphere on the boat (best looking one in the harbor) was relaxed and friendly. Instructions were given quickly, and we were off. We saw quite a few whales, with Captain & crew pointing them out. The food was a big surprise - it was excellent, and there was plenty of it. It was advertised as “appetizers”, but the chicken wings and ribs were so good, you could make a meal out of them. They also had quite an array of alcoholic beverages to offer. We’ve been on whale watch boat tours before, but this one was the best ever. My husband & I wholeheartedly recommend this tour. Our only complaint was that it wasn’t long enough, but that was because it was so enjoyable we didn’t want it to end.
In my opinion, the Challenge at Manele Bay is one of the finest golf courses in North America and I have been playing for over 50 years. Every hole has an ocean view and they are spectacular. The ferry ride to Lanai made the day even more special, as we saw over 40 whales on the trip back to Maui.
I participated in early December, but it was very windy that day, so we couldn't go to Molokini Island and instead snorkeled at a nearby spot. I saw fish and had a great time. The guide was very kind, and my father, who is in his 70s, was nervous about snorkeling for the first time but ended up having the most fun. The breakfast and cheeseburgers for lunch on the boat were also very delicious. It's a shame we couldn't make it to Molokini Island, but I really enjoyed it and would like to try again for a rematch at Molokini Island.
I meet very kind crew. Surprisely She have work there during 12 years. I met her 12 years ago at honeymoon. So I glad meet her.
I participated in a tour to Molokini Island because I wanted to see whales and turtles. My husband has been diving all over the world, and he said the visibility at Molokini Island is the best, incredibly clear! We were able to see whales multiple times, and we even witnessed some big jumps! It seems there were turtles in Turtle Town as well... I got a bit seasick, so I couldn't see them, but a couple on their honeymoon showed me pictures. Since I can't speak English, booking a tour with a Japanese guide was definitely the right choice. Even when I was feeling seasick, our Japanese guide, Kana, made a special juice for me and took care of various things, which I really appreciated and was very happy about. Thank you, Kana. I want to join this tour again for a revenge trip!
Special thanks to Bruce who was a perfect guide for our half day tour on Lanai. Learned and have seen a lot, including shipwreck beach and garden of gods. Absolute worth doing this trip. Very well organized. Thanks to all and again a special thanks to Bruce!
Knowledgeable tour guide/driver who guided us over 80% of the unpaved red dirt roads and explained the economics of a unique area.
For our last full day in Maui, my husband and I decided to book the 10:30 a.m. Discover Lanai Sail; what a good choice! From the moment we boarded the boat until the end of the day, the Trilogy crew did everything possible to make sure we had an exceptional experience. There were 5 crew for 50 passengers, so one of them was always nearby.
Once we were underway to Lanai, they served beverages, delicious cinnamon rolls and fresh fruit. The humpback whales were very active so the captain did his best to get closer when there was a sighting. As we got close to Lanai, we were surrounded by a school? of spinner dolphins. What fun!
After docking, they took us to the beach — quiet and sandy with restrooms and plenty of shade. Chairs, mats and snorkeling gear were efficiently distributed to get us into the water quickly. There was gentle surf but it was fairly easy to walk in. We’ve snorkeled many places, and this was nice, though not extraordinary. There were many fish, but the variety was limited. Still fun, and crew were very vigilant about keeping everyone safe.
For those who didn’t want to get in the water, (or didn’t stay in very long, like us), there was an island van tour that took about an hour an a quarter. There was no microphone used so I couldn’t hear quite everything, but it was interesting to see Lanai City.
At 3:00 we had a late lunch in Trilogy’s covered pavilion overlooking the dock area. Very pretty there. They served healthy and tasty food — tossed salad, noodle salad, corn on the cob, and BBQ chicken.
On our trip back to Lahaina (4-ish), the crew opened the bar as soon as the boat cleared the harbor for our trip back to Lahaina. Woo-hoo! Whale watching was even better than it had been in the morning. We also saw two baby whale breeches; what a thrill!
Outstanding trip. Very knowledgeable crew and really looked after everyone. The lady captain was superb, buffet great, but as an English lady I did have to ask for a knife and fork, which everyone found highly amusing.
Would definitely recommend, the best trip of my holiday.
By far the best snorkel excursion we ever took. Safety was the Captain's first priority and it was greatly appreciated.
The Four Winds offers just about everything possible from small boats for children, life jackets, other floating devices, and under water camera rentals. The crew was awesome.
What to expect? A crew that knows how to have a great time. Don't worry if you forget something because honestly they have everything including wet suits and eco friendly sun screen. On the way to Molokini, we seen a double whale breech which is the best I have seen yet. The captain was very knowledgeable about whales and turtles and was quite funny as he cracked a few jokes along the way. Upon boarding breakfast was served. Later lunch and on the way back a few beers. Great way to end a fabulous day.
I would highly recommend this activity for couples or families. Can't wait to do it again next year.
When my family was listing the highlights of our amazing vacation in Hawaii, we all agreed the snorkeling trip was the best of the best. Thank you.
I took this ferry to lanai.
Direction to ferry port is simple. Seat is comfortable.
The crew made sure everyone's needs/wants were tended to. I felt nauseated when snorkeling and swam back to shore and someone was in the ocean to help, then someone on shore removed my goggles and such, another staff member gave me ideas to "recover", and on the trip back, a different staff member found the best place for me to sit and sip some ginger ale. They engaged our young adult children and were fun loving - entertaining - and educational (about the sharks that were sighted) - plenty of food and drink.
All ages will enjoy this outing.
When I boarded the boat, I got completely soaked up to my knees. I was able to see whales quite close. I even saw them jump high enough to see their bellies. I'm happy to have achieved one of my main goals for going to Maui. The snacks were just small sandwiches.
Had a really good time on the trip. The customer service was top notch; every employee was ready to jump to serve the customer. It was a very smooth ride to Lanai accompanied with juice, coffee, cinnamon buns, and breakfast sandwiches. You end on a pretty secluded beach, and while snorkeling the crew was great about being available if you needed help, but otherwise leaving you alone to see the sights. Lunch was grilled chicken and Asian noodles. On the ride back they serve ice cream and then open the bar. We saw whales on both the outgoing trip and the return, and the captain would stop to view them. The only part I thought that was less than stellar was the food quality. While certainly not bad, it just wasn't anything great. Also, the description makes it seem like they serve booze the whole time, but they don't open the bar until about the last hour of the trip. All in all a very fun experience and a great trip for families.
Perfect half day - lots of drive time but able to see many different terrains and vistas - all stops perfectly chosen to show off different terrain and history. Drier guide was excellent.
It was a day of complete satisfaction! Swimming with sea turtles and manta rays was truly moving! I even got to see a whale jump unexpectedly! We had a full two hours of snorkeling, delicious breakfast and lunch, and even enjoyed some beer at the end—what a fantastic tour! Especially, our Japanese guide Kana was very kind and fun, taking lots of photos and giving us advice. I am truly grateful for all the care she provided! Thank you very much!!
The boat they normally take you on was in dry dock, so we didn't get the glass bottom boat. Also the wind was too strong that day, so we didn't get to go to Molokini. ...Basically we didn't get either of the things that were advertised, but those were uncontrollable elements and not the fault of the business. They took us out north along the coast from Ma'alaea Harbor and stopped at two separate locations. We still saw some tropical fish and some coral, and the water was warm and wonderful. They grill up a delicious burger and hotdogs if you buy the option to eat lunch on the boat, which was only $8 extra per person if memory serves. The ladies on the boat were very friendly and learned everyone's names by heart. They helped with instructions on the flippers and scuba gear. A great time with really nice people. I would definitely do it again!! They advise going on the morning sail if you want a chance to get to Molokini. That's where the real beauty is!
We didn't get to either spots listed in the title of the tour due to weather. Maybe, in the future, they can offer a discounted 2nd trip so you can actually get to Molokini Crater. They don't offer that, so you get what you get. The "glass bottom" boat is also a deceiving description of this boat. Don't go based on this alone. The area we went was suitable for a relaxed first time snorkel. Lots of people, but my Mom still got first class treatment due to her fear of the new adventure. Heather ensured she felt comfortable in the gear and went into the water with her to get her comfortable to go off on her own! It was a very good experience, although I would not take a tour like it again. I would opt for something with less people on a smaller boat, for sure. If you choose to purchase the photos at the end, make sure you sought him out to actually take some pictures of you first or you will just have a lot of pictures of other people. The pics he took of my Mom are really good, although there are none of me while snorkeling. But, there were a LOT of people, so how could he possibly get pics of everyone.
All in all the boat was clean, the people were nice, and the snorkeling was really great! The food was pretty good, too.
We have been on “dinner cruise’s before, thought it would be very nice for our anniversary based on description, not a sit down dinner cruise, you stand and hold onto poles. Unlimited drinks were nice.
We used this for our honeymoon trip.
As part of the basic tour, we had a snorkeling and snuba experience around Molokini Island.
Honestly, my impression was that there weren't many fish there.
After that, we moved to a spot where we could see sea turtles, and it was mentioned that snorkeling or snuba could be done for an additional fee.
At first, I was a bit disappointed because I thought the price included everything, but in the end, I was able to swim with two sea turtles, and there were also some lucky moments where we saw dolphins and whales from the boat, so it turned out to be a satisfying tour.
The tour instructors were generally cheerful people, so we had a great time.
