Big Island
After eating lunch at the Onizuka Visitor Center, we put on our warm clothing and were about to head to the summit when the road to the summit was closed due to snow and icy conditions. I understand that this is nature, and it can't be helped, but I have questions about the subsequent handling of the situation.
We were left at Onizuka for over 30 minutes without any explanation, then we were taken back to the car and descended. Just when I thought, "Are we going home like this?" we returned to the parking lot at 2000 meters, received a refund of $15 per person, and were left waiting again...? There seemed to be about 25 of us on the tour with two cars. During that time, I was quite irritated by the sound of the guides laughing outside.

着いたらドライバー兼ガイドは私たちを残したまま車外に出てしまい、
３０分くらい狭い車の中で、防寒着を着たまま何の説明もなく放置され、
みんなが「暑い」「これからどうなるの？」「車から出たい」など、
それぞれが不満を口にするようになったところで、
やっとガイドが帰ってきて車外へ出してくれました。
私たちのツアーは車２台で２５名前後いたように思います。
その間、車外から聞こえるガイド同士の笑い声にかなりイラっとしました。
その後、厚い雲で３個しか星が見えない空に向かって、レーザーポインターを使って
星座の説明をして下さいましたが、こんなことならさっさとホテルに帰りたかったです。
ハワイ島の滞在時間はわずかなので、何にもできないツアーを無理に継続するのではなく、
ツアー客の多数決を取るなりして、下山するという選択肢もあっていいと思います。
私たちのガイドは「質問があったら何でも聞いて下さい」というスタンスだったので、
こちらが何度も質問すればよかったのかも知れませんが、
ツアー自体の行程変更なので、その都度説明をしていただきたかったです。
天候で山頂に行けなかったことより、御社のガイドの対応が一番残念でした。
９割の日は山頂まで行けるけど、１割の日は行けないことがあるそうです。
今年の１月は１０日以上山頂に行けない日が続いたそうです。
楽しみにしていても残念な結果になることがあることを、
事前に納得して参加された方がいいと思います。

Three years ago, I attended a luau at a different hotel in the same area, but this one was better. それでも男女とも迫力と完成度高いダンスパフォーマンスに圧倒されますし、三人編成のハワイアンバンドが前座、幕間を程よい音楽で楽しませてくれます。他者のコメントで時間が長いとありましたが、確かにお子さん向けではないかな。

食事は結構な種類があり、少しずつ取ってもかなり大量になります。前の体験談にもあるように席によって食事をとりにいく順番が決まっていますので、スタート時刻から食べ放題と言う訳ではありません。待っている間におなかへってツラかったかな（笑）。

酸素が薄いとは言われてましたが こんなにも高所が息苦しくなるものか！と驚きでした。何度も繰り返し ”深呼吸して下さいね”と言われた事が身に染みました。お天気に恵まれた事とあまり寒くならなかったのが幸いでした。防寒対策が少しおろそかだったので心配してたのですがお貸し頂いた防寒着がとても軽くて暖かくて寒さを感じる事はありませんでした。夕日は何処でみても綺麗だなぁと思うのですが ここは4200メートル！そう雲海を下にして見る真っ赤に燃える太陽は本当に素晴らしかったです。そして高度3400メートルまで下りての星空観察。月齢を調べ、参加した日が新月から5日目？の三日月の夜だったので 満天の星空で天の川もくっきりと観られました。星座の説明なども とても丁寧で解りやすかったです。写真もいっぱい撮って頂きました。有難うございました。

先ずは、とっても気さくなガイドさん（まっちゃんさん）の〜aloha〜お迎えからはじまりました。高齢の母を気遣って下さり、乗り降りのしやすい助手席に乗せていただきました。
この日はほぼ満員。
溶岩から段々と緑が増えていきます。どんどん標高があがり、途中 雲の中に突入したり、パラパラと雨が降ったりで、目まぐるしく景色が変わると共に期待もどんどん膨らんでいきます。
体を高地に慣らすためにオニヅカセンターで1時間ほどお弁当タイムを経て、マウナケア山頂へ。
ネットや、ガイドブックなどで見たものとは違う、雲海や夕陽、星空でした。
360度素晴らしい景色。世界の名だたる天文台の下での星空観測。ハワイとは思えない気温。
少しだけ心配していた高山病もまったく問題ありませんでした。
まっちゃんさんがカメラに詳しくて、とてもステキな写真を撮ってくださったので、帰国後も写真見て楽しめます。
