When I think of Hawaii, I usually have a strong image of the ocean, but after participating in this tour, I feel like I've learned about another side of Hawaii. We were able to gaze down at various astronomical facilities from above and witness a magnificent sunset amidst quite a chilly wind. It was also wonderful to enjoy the celestial show with explanations. I believe that such tours can be subject to the luck of the weather, and I thought that my husband and I might not be able to observe the stars since clouds were moving in from Hilo. However, thanks to our guide's extensive experience, the early movements proved to be effective. The guide had studied geography and volcanoes at university and also had a keen interest in plants, making the information shared on the bus very enjoyable to listen to. It seems that they were well-prepared for altitude sickness, as none of the participants felt unwell. I hope to join another tour at Masashi's Nature School with such a wonderful guide in the future.

私のなかでハワイというと海のイメージが強かったのですがこのツアーに参加してもうひとつのハワイを教えていただいたように思います。各国の天文施設を眼下に仰ぎ見てかなりの寒風の中、雄大な日の入りをみることができました。また解説付きで天体ショーが楽しめたのもとてもよかったです。おそらくこうしたツアーは天候による運不運があるとおもうのですが今回もヒロのほうから雲がうごいてきていたそうで私も主人も星の観測は無理かなと思っておりました。しかしガイドの方の豊富な経験のおかげで早め早めの移動が功を奏しました。ガイドの方は大学で地理や火山を勉強されたようですし、植物へのご関心もおありだったのでバスの中でのご案内も大変たのしく聴くことができました。高山病への対処法も万全であった
のか参加メンバーどなたも具合悪くなることもありませんでした。またの機会にはこうした素晴らしいガイドさんのいるマサシのネイチャースクールで参加できればと思います。

I participated in the Mauna Kea Summit Sunset & Stargazing Tour with Masashi Nature School. I was warned not to fall asleep at high altitude, but I returned safely without any issues. Thanks to the warm clothing provided, I was able to withstand the cold at the summit. The sunset and twilight at the summit were truly magnificent. We were also able to take photos of the Subaru Telescope, which was one of our goals. The gradually expanding starry sky after dusk was unlike anything I had ever seen before. Our guide provided thorough explanations, and in the end, I was fortunate enough to see the Pleiades star cluster with the naked eye. It was an incredibly moving tour.

I love Hawaii and have been there many times, but this was my first time at Mauna Kea. About 50 years ago, I saw Saturn's rings and Jupiter's stripes many times through a refracting telescope. About 15 years ago, I saw the same thing with eight telescopes at Ayers Rock! But seeing the starry sky with my own eyes was the happiest time. I was also able to see several satellites! ❣️

Two years ago, I had an amazing sunset experience with a friend. I wanted my husband to experience that feeling too, so this year, we went to the Big Island of Hawaii. It's not every day you can drive up to 4,200 meters; that kind of experience is rare. I felt so close to the universe, and the starry sky was so breathtaking that I couldn't even recognize the constellations! It was raining at the Onizuka Visitor Center, but thanks to MASA's energy, by the time we reached the summit, the rain had stopped. We were able to take photos that made it look like we were flying in the sky with a broom against the backdrop of the sunset. The stargazing afterward was challenging due to the clouds, and we desperately searched for a spot where we could see the stars, ultimately finding the best position for stargazing that night. The guide maintained just the right distance. I enjoyed listening to the stories in the car. They even asked if we wanted to take photos. Our pickup time was 1:30 PM, and it took quite a while until the last participant was picked up, but we had time for restroom breaks at each hotel and to look around the hotels, which was nice. It felt like we were driving around the Big Island, and that was enjoyable too. I was worried about altitude sickness since it was my first time climbing a high mountain, but I followed the guide's instructions and made it back safely. The sunset was cloudy, so we couldn't see a beautiful sunset, but the light from the sun and the clouds created a magical landscape. I was so happy and moved to be here. The starry sky was not visible at the summit due to clouds, so we saw it a little lower down the mountain. It was incredibly beautiful and clear, as if the clouds had never been there. The number of stars was amazing! We could see the Milky Way clearly! I was so moved. We even took photos with the Milky Way in the background, and I truly felt it was worth coming here. 😊

ガイドの方は丁度いい距離感でした。車内のお話も聞いていて楽しかったです。写真撮りますか？と自らお声掛けして下さいます。私達のピックアップの時間が1時30分で最後の参加者の方のピックアップまで結構かかりましたが、ホテルごとにトイレ休憩やホテル内を見れる時間があったのと、ハワイ島をドライブしているようでそれも楽しかったです。初めて高い山に登ったので高山病が心配でしたがガイドさんの指示に従って無事帰ってこれました。サンセットは雲があり綺麗な夕陽は見れませんでしたが、太陽の光と雲で幻想的な風景が見れました。ここに来れたことが嬉しくて感動しました。星空は山頂の方は雲で見えませんでしたので少し山を下ったところで見ました。先程まで雲に覆われていたのが嘘のように綺麗で澄んだ星空が見えました。星の数がすごい！天の川も普通に見える！感動しました。天の川を背景に写真も撮っていただき、本当に来て良かったと思いました(^^)

There are several tour companies that offer sunset and stargazing tours at the summit of Mauna Kea, but I chose the tour from Mauna Kea Nature School. I believe a lot depends on the guide's skills, and I'm glad I made this choice. The guide's storytelling was excellent, making the half-day tour feel shorter. On the day of the tour, we were fortunate with the weather at the summit and were able to see a beautiful sunset and a stunning starry sky. Participating in this tour made me feel like I achieved half of my travel goals. I would join again.

Last time it was cold, so I was fully prepared with tights, pants, and Heattech! It felt like summer in Hawaii, haha.
This time, it wasn't cold at all. I didn't need the tights...

We thought of this as an experience and continued on to the Onizuka Center. We waited while eating our lunch, hoping that the weather would clear up and the road would be reopened, but in the end, it was not.

After that, we hurriedly searched for a good spot to see the sunset and drove the van. Thanks to that, we were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset and starry sky. The photos taken can be downloaded later.

Finally, we received a re-participation ticket valid for one year. It seems we need to apply directly on the website rather than through here, but I definitely want to challenge this again next year. Also, I was happy to meet BigJin, who helped us on a previous tour, after eight years.

The starry sky was amazing and became a lifelong memory. I left something in the car. I called the company the next day, and they immediately checked the car for me. We participated as a family of four. On the day of the event, we couldn't see the sunset due to the clouds, but the stargazing after moving to a different location was wonderful. After sunset, the stars began to appear one by one, and in the end, we were treated to a sky full of stars and the Milky Way. I was able to see two shooting stars with my own eyes for the first time. They really do exist!

I was amazed that we could drive all the way up to the summit at 4,200 meters. It was a valuable experience to see Japan's Subaru Telescope and observatories from various countries.

Additionally, as an apology for the delay in the hotel pickup, we received a small bag of Kona coffee, which made me feel the sincerity of their proper Japanese hospitality. I would love to join guide Tyler again!

日没後、少しずつ星が現れ始め、最後は降るような星空と、天の川になりました。
流れ星も2つ？、生まれて初めて肉眼で確認出来ました。本当にあったんですね。
4200メートルの頂上まで車で行けるのが凄いと思いました。日本の昴展望台や、各国の観測所も見る事が出来て、貴重な体験でした。
また、ホテルのPick upが遅れたお詫びに、コナコーヒーの小袋をいただき、きちんとした日本的な対応で誠意を感じました。

We climbed the mountain in a full car under a cloudy sky with some fog. I was half giving up, thinking that we wouldn't be able to see the sunset or the starry sky. We were lent warm clothes, had lunch, and took some time to acclimatize before heading to the summit. At first, we couldn't see anything due to the fog, but around sunset, the fog cleared up nicely, and we were able to see the sunset, which was breathtaking. If you're going to the Big Island, I highly recommend it! You can see the best sunset and, surprisingly, a lot of stars. The explanations about the mountains and constellations along the way were very easy to understand, and the attention to guests was excellent! While the weather can be a factor, I hope you get to experience the view from above the clouds.

I rated this tour one star, but there were no issues with the content of the tour or the guide's response. However, it seems we fell into the 10% of the 90% clear skies on our observation day, as we could only see a faint sunset and just three stars in the night sky (three stars...). Therefore, my satisfaction level for the sunset and stargazing tour was zero. There's nothing we can do about the weather. Since we participated on the fourth day after the hurricane passed, the road from the Onizuka Visitor Center to the summit was reportedly closed due to landslides. The guide kindly explained this at pickup, and at that point, we could cancel for a full refund. We decided to participate, and by the time we arrived at the Onizuka Visitor Center, the road to the summit had reopened. However, it seems some people canceled on the day. Our guide, Matsuzaki, did his best to keep the spirits up despite only seeing a little bit of the sun at the summit, and he took many photos for us. During the stargazing, he diligently searched for a spot without clouds and explained the stars to the participants, who were feeling quite down since we couldn't see any stars at all (laughs). In the car on the way back, everyone had a somber atmosphere, and I think the guide felt quite uncomfortable. However, I believe the content was wonderful. If I ever come back to the Big Island, I would like to participate with this company again.
