In 2018, it seemed like the weather was unpredictable, and I was worried about whether I would be able to see the sunset and starry sky.

At 15:35, we were picked up from the hotel, and according to our cheerful guide, Kon, the previous day had bad weather, but the area near the summit of Mauna Kea above the cloud sea had clear blue skies. Lucky!!!

We were able to see a beautiful sunset! Our guide, Kon, took several wonderful photos of us, a group of eight, along with a newlywed couple, with the sunset in the background. Everyone was having a great time posing for pictures.

After that, we moved to a different location for stargazing. Since it was quite windy, they made a windbreak with the car, which was thoughtful. Good job! The day we participated was about two days after the full moon, so the moon rose a little later, allowing us to see the starry sky. We could also see the Southern Cross. Additionally, we were able to see the sky glowing red from the distant eruption of Kilauea. It was a unique experience.

And then the moon rose. It felt like it was the brightest moon I had ever seen. To enjoy stargazing, it’s best to avoid the full moon. It would be wise to check the moon phases before making a reservation.

Of course, taking photos with the starry sky in the background requires a good camera; otherwise, the stars won’t show up. Kon shared his wonderful knowledge about the stars and explained everything in a fun way while using a pointer. The guiding beyond just the starry sky was also excellent.

Whether you can enjoy an activity tour largely depends on the guide. In my personal opinion, Kon was really great.

Since all the participants were from the same hotel, we were able to return to the hotel earlier than expected. I think we arrived around 22:45.

On the day we participated, it was quite windy near the summit, but the temperature was higher than usual, so I was fine with just a trainer and a light down jacket from Uniqlo, along with the jacket and pants borrowed from the tour company. I did use a portable hand warmer just in case. (The portable hand warmer needs to be taken out of the bag below to warm up, as Kon advised.)

I think I got a bit too excited at the summit, as I had a slight headache on the way back. (It didn’t get too bad.) I realized that it can happen on the way back too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the nature of the Big Island. I highly recommend this tour. Next time, I plan to go see the sunrise.

2018年今年は、天候が不順のようで、夕陽と星空が見られるか心配しながらの参加でした。
15：35ホテルピックアップ、明るいガイドのコンちゃんの話によると、前日は悪天候だったとのことでしたが、雲海の上のマウナケア山頂付近はクリアな青空でした。ラッキー！！！

きれいな夕陽をみることができました！ガイドのコンちゃんは、夕陽をバックに友人と二人参加の私達、8人グループ、新婚さんと、それぞれの素敵な写真を何枚も撮ってくれました。みんな大はしゃぎでポーズをとってました。
その後、場所を移動して星空観察。風が強かったので、車で風よけを作ってくれる配慮。Good Job!　参加した日が満月の翌々日くらいで、月が昇る時間が少し遅くなっていたので、星空を見ることができました。南十字星も見えました。そして、遠くにキラウエアの噴火で赤く染まる空を見ることもできました。今ならではですね。
そして、月が昇るのも。こんなに明るい月は、初めてのような気がします。
星空をみるには、満月を避けたいですね。事前に月の満ち欠けを調べてから、申し込みをした方が良いですね。
もちろん、星空をバックに写真撮影、好感度のカメラでないと星は写りませんね。
コンちゃんは、星空の素晴らしい知識で、ポインターを使いながら楽しく説明をしてくれました。星空以外のガイドもすごく良かったです。
アクティビティツアーを楽しめるかは、ガイドさんによるところが大きいです。私の個人的な意見ですが．．．コンちゃんは、すごく良かったです。
今回の参加メンバーは、全員が同じホテルだったこともあり、ホテルに戻るのが思っていたより早く帰ることができました。
22：45くらいには、着いていたと思います。

私たちが参加した日は、頂上付近は風が強かったですが、気温はいつもより高かったので、トレナーとユニクロのライトダウンに、ツアー会社で借りた上着とズボンで大丈夫でした。一応、携帯カイロは使いました。（携帯カイロは、下で袋から出さないと温かくならないそうです。コンちゃんアドバイスあり）
私は、頂上ではしゃぎ過ぎたせいか、帰路で少し頭が痛くなりました。（ひどくはなりませんでした）帰りでもあるんだなと思いました。

ハワイ島の自然を満喫できました。お薦めツアーです。次回は、日の出を見に行こうと思います。
とても良い経験が、できました。

I was worried about the weather being cloudy on the day and whether we would be able to observe the stars, but after arriving at the Onizuka Center, the clouds cleared, and we were able to see the sunset and Maui Island. As it got dark, the main stargazing experience was the best memory, something I can't experience in Japan. The outflow from Kilauea Volcano to the sea was also clearly visible. I brought my digital SLR and tripod, so I was able to take many photos of the stars (which can't be captured with a smartphone camera or digital camera). The driver will take some photos for you, so it's okay if you don't have a DSLR. I participated this time with my daughter, but next time I will join with my husband.

ドライバーさんが何枚かは撮影してくれますので、一眼レフ、お持ちでない方OKですよ。
今回は娘と参加しましたが、次回は主人と参加します。

Since it was almost a full moon and cloudy, I didn't have high expectations for the starry sky (laughs). Our tour guide, JIN, was very knowledgeable and provided explanations that I hadn't heard on other tours, which was very educational. I also appreciated how much he respected the Japanese community, which came through in his conversation. (After returning home, I reflected on their achievements as well.)

At the actual summit of Mauna Kea, both my husband and I experienced symptoms of altitude sickness, which was unexpected (but don't worry, it wasn't severe!). I realized we shouldn't underestimate it (though we got used to it quickly—maybe it's due to our age). My husband was thrilled to finally visit the location of the National Astronomical Observatory and the Subaru Telescope, which he had always admired. The sunset was incredibly beautiful with the contrast of the clouds and the sunset, making it the highlight of our trip.

Although the stargazing didn't turn out as hoped, we were able to take photos with the volcano thanks to JIN's photography skills. As expected! I would love to visit again during a new moon when the volcanic activity has calmed down.

主人はずっと憧れていた国立天文台・すばる望遠鏡の場所に来れたことに感動していました。サンセットは雲と夕日のコントラストでとても美しく、今回の旅での一番の記念になりました。
星空観測は残念な結果となりましたが、JINさんの撮影で火山と一緒に撮影することができました。さすが！
今度は、新月で火山噴火が落ち着いたころにまた訪れたいです。

I prepared for the cold by bringing a hoodie, a rash guard, and slacks, as it was mentioned in advance to dress in layers. I thought it would be just right to receive warm clothing at the 2,800-meter "Onizuka Visitor Center." However, when I reached the summit, it was quite windy and very cold! I borrowed gloves, but it was still chilly. I seriously wished I had a sweater. The view from the top was fantastic, possibly because the air was so clear. The sunset was beautiful. At night, since the moon wasn't out, I was able to observe many stars, and the guide explained the constellations using a laser pointer, which was a lot of fun. I was impressed by the guide's extensive knowledge!

What surprised me was that I could see the "Hubble Space Telescope" flying right above the tour! It became a great memory.

I fully understood that the weather could affect our plans, but the island tour, including Kilauea, that I had booked the day before was canceled due to the eruption. I prayed to at least see Mauna Kea, and my prayers were answered.

Without suffering from altitude sickness, I witnessed a beautiful sunset at the summit of Mauna Kea. For some reason, I found myself in tears. Then, at a parking lot a little lower down, we enjoyed a starry sky. It was a luxurious time lying down together just to gaze at the stars. Kon-chan's explanations were easy to understand.

It was a perfect night with a sky full of stars, with no moon in sight. It was an experience I will never forget.

The first thing the hotel staff said upon our arrival was, "It was snowing in the morning, and the summit was closed. It's open now, but we don't know when it might close again." We set off with a bit of a resigned attitude. Normally in April, there's an 80% chance of reaching the summit, but this year, there's an 80% chance of not being able to. They mentioned that for the past few days, no one had been able to reach the summit. When we arrived at the Onizuka Visitor Center, it was raining quite a bit, and we were fully in a resigned mode. After a while, the rain stopped, so we decided to eat our lunch outside. Then, gradually, it started to brighten up, and we were able to climb Mauna Kea! Although we couldn't see the bright red sunset like in the pictures, we were grateful to have made it to the summit.

For stargazing, they helped us find a good spot to see the stars. The explanations about the stars were easy to understand. We even saw shooting stars. What was unexpectedly delightful was that during the stargazing session, we were served cookies and tea, and the cookies were Mrs. Barry's cookies, which I had wanted to try! Thank you to our guides, Jin and Konno! It was a very satisfying tour.

The summit of Mauna Kea is cold. They lend you upper and lower wear, so I brought my own lightweight down jacket, high socks, and gloves that allow me to use my smartphone. They also lend gloves, but they are thick, making it inconvenient to operate the camera.

　星空観測は、見える所を探して見せてくれました。星の説明もわかりやすかったです。流れ星もみました。予想外にうれしかったのが、星空観測の際にクッキーと紅茶をいただいたのですが、そのクッキーが食べてみたかったミセスバリーズのクッキーでした！ガイドのジンさん、コンノさんお世話になりました！とても満足できるツアーでした。
　マウナケアの山頂は、寒いです。上下のウェアを貸してくれるので、自分で薄手のダウンとハイソックスの靴下とスマホができる手袋を持っていきました。手袋も貸してもらえますが、分厚いのでカメラの操作をするには不自由です。

Jim Carrey led our group on a wonderful adventure! He is a master story teller and an provided such detail in sharing the culture, sites and flavors of Hawaii.
The day was rainy but we were covered by umbrellas and deliciously warm coats that the tour provided. There were so many things to see and stories to be heard that the day was over way too quickly. Will most definitely do this tour again the next time we visit the Big Island and we will definitely ask for Jim Carrey to be our guide!

Lee, our tour guide was super friendly. He also teaches at a local school hence has a great skill for storytelling. He not only showed us some pretty amazing stuff like live volcano, volcano tubes and the waterfalls, he also told us a lot about Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaiian culture, heritage and people.
If you are someone who wants to know more about all these places and the legends and stories associated with them, go for this tour. Lee has so much knowledge to share and we felt like school kids on excursion. He encourages questions and appreciates them too!
He showed us the Hokule'a which was in town for 2 weeks. And took us to the amazing Rama paintings exhibition. He gave us a brief tour of the town and showed us several historic sites and took us to the Volcano on time.
He customizes the tours based on your interests.
We had a great time and wish Lee and his family the best!

It's a shame that we couldn't reach the summit due to the out-of-season snowfall, but our guide, Mr. Konno, worked hard and we were able to see a sky full of stars, achieving our main goal. On the way back, we also saw the starry sky by the roadside, and he showed us the Southern Cross, making it a wonderful memory.

Our tour guide Grant was amazing and very knowledgeable! He made the experience so great! The tour was great you get to see a lot of the big island. I love waterfalls and the rainbow falls was breathtaking. The volcano view at night was so awesome I would totally do it again. Worth the money!

Spent a week in Hawaii and this was the best thing we participated in! Lee, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about Hilo and the volcanoes. We saw waterfalls, black sand beaches, and of course the volcano. Our 9 year old son could have climbed on lava rock all day! Wish we could have spent more time in the park itself, but we saw it all in 6 hours!! Well worth the money to do a private tour. Even had a picnic sitting amongst old lava flows!

The weather that week was generally bad, and I heard that the view the day before we participated wasn't great either, which made me anxious. However, the guide's accurate predictions dispelled my worries. I was about to give up on stargazing after watching the sunset, but thanks to the guide's persistence, the sky gradually cleared up. At first, I couldn't see a single star, but before I knew it, there were so many that I couldn't count them all. It was truly an amazing tour filled with miracles!

First of all, the guide's talk was interesting. Although we couldn't reach the summit due to bad weather and had to settle for a sunset and stargazing at a different location, it was still a satisfying experience. On top of that, we received a free ticket for our next visit, which made us very happy! I would like to return to the Big Island and take this tour again!

When I got into the shuttle car, I wasn't sure if we would be able to see the sunset, but I was told that we could still climb to the summit. We ascended to the Onitsuka Center as planned, and while we were eating our lunch, the situation changed. Due to bad weather, the gate beyond that point was closed, and we were informed that we couldn't go to the summit today. Indeed, the fog was thick, and the visibility was poor, making it look dangerous for an amateur to drive any further. It was disappointing, but from there, the plan changed to the driver's original itinerary. We aimed for a spot where we could see the sunset, and those who opted out of the stargazing were taken back to the hotel, which seemed quite challenging.

Anyway, the distance we had to travel was long, and the car was going fast, which felt a bit scary for us since we weren't used to it. However, the driver was experienced, and the roads were wide with many straight stretches, so we managed to return to the hotel safely without encountering any particularly dangerous situations. It was very unfortunate that we couldn't reach the summit. We received a rain check, a re-participation ticket valid for two years, but since it's not easy for us to come back, I thought it would have been nice if we could get about half of our money back...

送迎の車に乗った時には、夕日が見えるかどうかはわからないが、一応山頂までは登っていけるとのことでした。予定通りにオニツカセンターまで登り、お弁当を食べている間に状況が変わりました。悪天候のため、そこから先のゲートがクローズされ、本日は山頂に行けないとのことでした。たしかにガスがかかって視界が悪く、この先を運転していくのは素人目に見ても危険な感じでした。残念でしたが、そこからは運転手兼ツアーガイドのオリジナルプランへの変更されました。夕日の見えるところを目指し、その後の星空観測を辞退する方をホテルに送り、大変そうでした。とにかく移動距離が長いので、車のスピードが速く、なれない我々には多少怖い感じがしました。が、そこは毎日運転していて大丈夫なのでしょう、道も広く、直線が多いので、とくに危ない目にも会わず無事にホテルまで帰ってくることができました。山頂まで登れなかったのは非常に残念でした。レインチェックという、2年間有効の再参加チケットをもらいましたが、なかなか来れないので、半額位返ってくるとよかったのになぁ。。。。って思いました。

We went on the tour and when we saw it was pouring rain we were worried. Well, never fear with Lee as your guide. We saw so much and learned so much it was crazy. My 15 and 10 year old have been talking all the next day about what a nice and knowledgable person he is. When we hugged goodbye with someone who was a stranger 6 hours earlier, it was hard to leave. He was able to weave the incredible history of Hawaii throughout our trip by tyin flowers, lava, Hawaiian history, and his own story together to make an amazing tale we will NEVER FORGET. I highly recommend spending a day with Lee!

Best day of the trip

The day itself started with a local Kona coffee plantation visit that included how the coffee trees are grown, picked, sorted, and roasted. Next stop was a roadside fruit stand where we were introduced to some island fruits and veggies. There was a good drive to the furthest south bakery in the U.S. where our tour guide Grant filled the drive time giving us the layout of the island. From there we visited a black sands beach and looked out for sea turtles. After the beach, we headed to Volcano Park to see the volcano during day light hours and checkout the Dr Jagger museum. Then the dinner... food was good and we had a chance to talk to other members on the tour. This led to the sun setting and the final activity... the volcano at night. The glow of the cauldron is amazing in of itself, but Grant pulled out a telescope and we not only got a close up view of the spattering lava, he also was able to record it on our phones!
Grant was a phenomenal tour guide! He was personable, full of facts and information, and delivered them in a fun, witty way. From the moment of being picked up, Grant was pointing plants and notable sights to the left and the right the entire time we were in the tour van.
