My wife and I did a Zipline in Kauai last year and quickly fell in love with the activity. When we went to the Big Island this year we decided to give it another try and see if it was still as thrilling. You take a 15 minute ride through a farm area on your way to the first zipline and the staff gives you information on the plants in the area; both native and non-native to Hawaii. The opening ziplines they take you on are all about helping you feel comfortable for an activity that most participants haven't experienced before. While hanging from a cable may seem scary to some, we quickly felt safe and confident from the start given the equipment and staff's help. Each zipline is longer and better than the previous one and the last two ziplines are nothing short of sensational and worth the price of admission on their own. For a great experience and an opportunity to see a vantage point of Hawaii and its spectacular waterfalls rarely seen, this series of ziplines is a can't miss!

My husband and I are both slightly scared of heights, but this was just amazeballs! Wasn't scary at all (maybe the van ride out, a bit...). It's like sitting in a swing. Had a good time with our group, and got to taste some fresh bananas, ginger nectar, and sugar cane on the farmland we were traversing. Great fun, wish we could have done more than 7 lines, though,

We boarded with a group of four from Taiwan, making a total of six people. The pilot was a young white man who resembled Tom Cruise, and my wife was delighted. The explanations were in English, but he spoke slowly, making it easy to understand. He casually chatted with the women about where they were from, but he didn't ask us men anything. He made several turns to make it easy to take photos, showing great service spirit. We flew over the Pu'u 'O'o crater and Kalapana, and on the way back, we enjoyed a view of Akaka Falls. I realized that you can only get there by helicopter.

Blue Hawaiian is the best. Flew with them on Oahu too and experience was just as good in Hilo. Having to pay to park at airport sucks. Other than that, it was perfect. Flight is super safe, never felt nervous about it. Jeremy was our pilot and was very friendly and kept us informed everything we saw and questions we had. We took several turns to ensure everyone could see the lava and got in close. It will rain in Hilo often but that's the norm, be prepared for possible rainy or cloudy conditions but they will fly around any rains. They are used to it.
Basically, well worth it, fly the Eco Star is most comfortable, don't let fear of flying be the reason you don't do this. None of the volcano ground tours will get you anywhere close to the action, this is the only way to see the volcano.

Kilauea does what it wants, but the only way to really get an idea of what that is is to see it by helicopter. I've done that on two occasions a couple of years apart. This tour was by far superior to the previous one. While we covered essentially the same territory, our pilot on this trip was pleasant, knowledgeable, and very professional. At the end of the tour, we had a much better understanding of the nature of the mountain; and the waterfalls, too, were majestic.
Aloha and thank you for your kind feedback. We appreciate your comments and want to offer more than just a visually stunning tour, we want to be able to compliment that with the knowledge of the area you are exploring. Our pilots are very knowledgeable about the areas they cover and are state certified tour guides. We do wish you a great day and hope that we might be able to see you in the future on one of our other tours.

This is exactly as described, a 40 minute helicopter tour of the volcanoes on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii and the area around Hilo. The staff are very friendly and the entire operation is well run and safety oriented. Our pilot Joyce was informative and did a great job of piloting so that everyone on both sides of the helicopter got good views of everything. Considering that there are no active lava flows at the current time. This is the only way to see molten lava. While it is through "sky lights" looking down into lava tubes, it is still quite exciting to see the bright pink/orange glow of lava.
The helicopter company offers the option to fly with the doors off the helicopter. I would recommend this for optimum viewing and picture taking. However, be aware that it is pretty chilly with the doors off and make sure to wear a warm jacket.
As a final note, when booking a helicopter tour, be aware that there are two airports on the island (Hilo and Kona). Make certain that you are booking a tour from the airport that is on your side of the island. I made a mistake and booked a tour out of the wrong airport. It was completely my fault and I did not realize my mistake until the day before the tour. The folks at Veltra and at the helicopter company went out of their way to get us booked on this tour at the last minute. They also worked hard to find someone else to take our seats on the tour that I had originally booked. They were only able to fill one of the two seats that I had booked, but at least they were kind enough to refund that portion of the fee.

Professional pilots and a well-coordinated organization combined to show us where the lava action was happening. We were safely strapped in and plugged into communications so we could get the most out of what we were seeing and trying to photograph. With an experienced pilot, everyone in the chopper got a good chance for the best views. The photography itself can be tricky; the higher quality pictures you try to take, the more you should have a good camera setup and practice from a vibrating platform. Overall: a rousing success.

The garden had many varieties of plants. The zip rides were kind of short. There was also a suspension bridge we walked across. They need to add more and longer zip lines. The few seconds that we zipped across were hardly enough. The guides provided some fruit snacks from the trees as we walked between zip lines and talked about different trees. The water fall and the surrounding ranches with cows sleeping were a nice sight. Though those ranches do not belong to botanical gardens. Staff was very friendly and professional. I did not take Segway tour and chose instead to drive by myself to Hilo. Make sure to drive to Liliuokalani Park in Hilo when you are there. It was a very impressive Japanese garden design.

I researched how to see the lava flows of Kilauea, including night tours from the sea. A helicopter tour was my first choice, but it was a bit pricey, so I was unsure. However, I found that tours from Hilo are about half the price compared to those from Waikoloa, and the travel time from Kona to Hilo was shorter than I expected. So, I decided to go for it and signed up for a tour from Hilo, along with a drive around the Big Island.
Seeing the Earth's living processes up close from the sky was incredible. The sight of the village buried in lava, the bright red crater, and the dramatic flow of lava into the ocean with steam was breathtaking. It was definitely worth it, and I was extremely satisfied.

We got some great close-ups of the volcano and the remnants of the village that once was there. We didn't see as many waterfalls as I thought we would but it didn't take away from the trip. Marco was our pilot and he was fabulous. My 13 year old was a bit nervous with the doors off and he made her feel right at ease.
The view you get and the knowledge passed down by Marco was great! You cannot truly appreciate the volcano and what it can do unless you see it from above. The big picture and unique view from above is priceless.
We saw lava the day we went and that was a bonus, but even if you cannot see the the lava, it is still a wonderful way to view the landscape and truly see the devastation the lava flow can do.
We have done another helicopter tour in the past on Kauai and it is the best way to see the islands. You can go places a car cannot and that is worth it!
Thank you Marco and the rest of the staff at Paradise Helicopter...you were wonderful and we had a great trip!

There were a couple of stops at commercial sites that could be left off the tour. The guide was good and knew a lot about the area. This tour could be streamlined and only take half a day.

I did this helicopter ride with my husband and 12 yr old son. It was fantastic! We got lucky and had a sunny day, and the views of the island were amazing. We saw some lava flows, we saw waterfalls, and the pilot shared lots of information. We saw a house that had recently been destroyed by lava flow, and all that was left was a bit of roof. We had never done a helicopter ride, and I was a bit nervous about it. We rode with the doors on. It was very smooth, and the views made me forget to be nervous. I felt very safe actually. Our pilot (Aaron) was completely competent and friendly and knowledgeable. I got to sit in the front, next to the pilot. My husband and son sat behind us and they had a great time. Its expensive, but its worth doing at least once. You'll get a view of the island that you can't see any other way.
