My husband and I have driven in the mountains for 40 plus years but booked this because we were led to believe it was difficult to get a permit to go up to Mauna Kea Summit in a private vehicle. If you are used to altitude and drive in the mountains, don't pay for this. The meal was only so-so though I realize if you are not used to living at altitude you don't want a heavy meal when you do the ascent as you do not have the extra red blood cells most of us who live at 6,000+ feet carry. The guide was okay but on the highway he drove way too slow. It really was not worth the price to us. It would be great if it was the only way you would be at the summit as seeing the sunset there was awesome. Our driver led us to believe that rental car companies would not allow you to drive a rental car up it. But, when we returned our car to the airport to leave we found out that was not the case (at least with our company). There is part of the road that is unpaved but it was graded and r

It was incredibly powerful. They come so close that they almost bump into you. They swoop right in front of you again and again! Four to five mantas came by repeatedly.
They come to eat the plankton gathered around the lights, and it was my first time consciously noticing the plankton itself, so it was very refreshing.
The meeting point is the office at the Kona Shopping Center. You check in there. There are no staff who speak Japanese. They didn't provide specific guidance on the wetsuits, but there was staff in the next room who lent them out. I participated in July, and I think it’s better to wear a wetsuit as the night sea can be a bit cold, especially for Japanese people who tend to feel cold more.
After borrowing the wetsuit, everyone moves to the harbor past the Sheraton. It’s easier if you have a rental car. If you ask the staff at the office, they can call a taxi for you. I considered taking a shuttle, but the timing didn’t work out.
Once we arrived at the harbor and boarded the boat, we enjoyed a cruise while watching the sunset, and when it got dark, we finally entered the sea to see the mantas. We held onto a pole and waited for the mantas to come to eat the plankton. After a while, one large manta, then two!! Four to five came by. We could see right into their mouths.
There are days when you might not see many, but we had mantas coming by repeatedly, and it was an impressive and wonderful experience. Everything was in English, but if you have courage, you can manage. It was just amazing.

This was my first time participating in Mr. Nawata's tour, but it was my second time on the dolphin tour in Hawaii Island. Since it was my second time, he tried to take us to a different northern point than last time, but unfortunately, we were informed that there were no dolphins in the north that day... so we moved back to the same southern area as before. However, I was really happy about his consideration.
During the first swim, dolphins were everywhere around me. No matter how many times I went in, there were dolphins all around. Dolphins to the right, dolphins to the left, dolphins in front, behind, and below. They even swam right in front of me on purpose, spinning around, and it felt like I jumped right into the pod! It was truly blissful to swim leisurely while looking into the dolphins' eyes. The ultimate healing experience. I also got to see manta rays swimming gracefully.
Such an exciting and fulfilling activity always feels fresh and brings new discoveries, no matter how many times you experience it. I am grateful for the great nature of Hawaii Island and for Mr. Nawata. Thank you very much.

My family of 6 really enjoyed the kayak and snorkeling trip on the Big Island. The guides were extremely friendly, informative, and supportive. We had a couple of stops on the trip out, where we learned more about the island and its history. The snorkeling was great. It also provided a sense of how deep the water was, which made jumping off the cliff much easier. The guides provided plenty of refreshments, which made the trip back a little easier. Kayaking does require physical activity, so be prepared and drink water (which they will provide).

We participated as a couple with a 6-year-old child (kindergarten age).
We were able to see them properly! I think there were about 10 of them. It's definitely different from an aquarium! It’s magical, but some people might feel a bit scared because it’s quite dark.
We held onto a raft with downward-facing lights while waiting for the manta rays. You can float on your stomach with your feet on the float, so it’s easy and you don’t have to kick or tread water.
It seemed like they were coming closer to the brightest spot. Other tour rafts and divers were brighter, so they didn’t come too close, but we enjoyed it enough.
Since our child can’t swim yet, we used a jacket that we brought with us that inflates with air. They generally don’t use jackets, so if you need one, you should ask for it.
Also, it’s quite cold. Even people who usually handle the cold well were feeling chilly. Wearing two wetsuits keeps you warm, so it might be a good idea to ask if you can rent two when you get there.
I think it would be great to have a waterproof camera that can record video. For still images, you really need a big camera.

Swimming with dolphins has been a dream of mine for many years, perhaps influenced by the show "Flipper" I watched as a child.
I never expected to swim with so many dolphins...
As I entered the water at the call of Mr. Nawata, I found myself surrounded by a pod of dolphins.
The dolphins were swimming in a playful cluster, some were with their young, and when I was focused on the ocean floor, they would suddenly appear right in front of me.
I could even hear the sounds the dolphins made and clearly see their droppings!
Changing spots, I jumped back in at the command of "Okay, go down," and to my surprise, there was even a manta ray! I was so captivated by the manta ray that I completely forgot about the waterproof camera I had bought for this day.
I tried to dive like Leo, who was with us, but unfortunately had to give up due to the weight of the fat on my body.
When I returned to the boat and learned that Leo was a national record holder in freediving and had connections with Jack Mayol, I was astonished...
After enjoying another round of swimming with the dolphins, I felt completely satisfied.
I apologize for any unpleasantness caused by my seasickness during the trip... but it was such an amazing experience that I forgot all about it. I never imagined I would be able to swim with dolphins at such a close distance!!
Next time, I definitely plan to join a manta ray tour. Thank you, Mr. Nawata and Leo. I look forward to seeing you again!

Thank you, Chizuko, for your help during our trip. I climbed Mauna Kea about ten years ago, but we were surprised by a snowstorm. This time, I brought my father along for a comeback, but unfortunately, we couldn't see the stars due to the clouds! So, I rate the cost-performance three stars. If we could have seen them, it would have been four. I'm sorry about that.
However, we were fortunate to catch a glimpse of the sunset through the gaps in the clouds. Chizuko explained about the animals during the drive, and since we had some time, she showed us the horses at Suzuki Ranch, which made the travel time enjoyable. At the summit, the wind was incredibly strong (it was almost at the point where entry would be prohibited), yet she managed to take photos of everyone while trying not to get blown away. My father seemed to be moved by the sunset as well. I plan to come back to see Scorpio!
Oh, but the bento could use a little improvement... It wasn't bad, but I believe it could be tastier! Especially the tamagoyaki! Thank you!

Due to the elevation, the wind was strong, and even with a sweater, a parka, and the ski gear I borrowed, along with gloves and a hat, it was still cold when the wind blew. However, the beauty of the sunset I saw amidst that was breathtaking. I was completely captivated by the changes in the sky that I couldn't take my eyes off for even a moment.
The starry sky was a bit lower from the summit, but there were so many stars that I thought there might be even more than in a planetarium. The guide's explanations were clear and interesting.
Of course, the constellations visible change with the seasons.
I definitely want to participate again at a different time of year.

I participated with my husband. As we are approaching 50, we had some concerns about our health, but we joined with the approval of our family doctor. We were eager to see the scenery we had longed for, so we decided to participate.
I was so excited that I worried about motion sickness and took some anti-nausea medication, which turned out to be a mistake. I felt fine overall, but I was incredibly sleepy! I was told, "You can't sleep here~," and while sipping water, I somehow managed to get through it. If you usually don't get motion sickness, I think you might not need to take anything, as the bumpy road is over quickly (just my personal opinion).
We came to see the breathtaking sunset at Mauna Kea, but it was covered in thick clouds (tears). At the summit, our guide was chatting with guides from other companies, and we ended up not knowing what was happening during the sunset (tears). The stars were also cruelly hidden by the pesky clouds.
The stargazing took place at a parking area slightly lower than the summit (with no restrooms), and whether it was due to drinking too much water or the altitude, both my husband and I found ourselves needing the restroom frequently. We had used the facilities at the Onizuka Center and the makeshift restroom at the summit, but stargazing turned into a battle with our bladders. As the clouds gradually thinned and we finally started to see the stars, it was time to leave.
On the way back at the Onizuka Center, I was finally able to use the restroom, and when I looked up at that moment, the sky was filled with stars (tears). That day, all the tours were fully booked, and the Onizuka Center was very crowded, but I wished everyone could have been let down a bit longer to enjoy the starry sky. I think stargazing is better at the Onizuka Center, which has restrooms... Nature and our body's natural reactions are unbeatable! I'll save this experience for my next adventure.

Felt like a tourist but I got to do things I never did before like jump off that high cliff and kayak on my own. It was a LOT of work for me. If you've never done it, go with a double kayak. It's a little easier. The sea caves were non-existent. We only got 2 feet near a small little opening in the rock. The snorkeling was good. I rated the trip 4 stars only because of our guide who was really understanding and encouraging when it came to handling the fact that my daughter's boyfriend could not swim. It was because of our guide, I think his name is Brent, that John became daring enough to snorkel off the kayak and get help getting onto the rocks where he was able to relax a little and enjoy the snacks. The jump off the cliff is scary but fun to brag about afterwards. It was worth it for the experience of paddling a kayak on the open ocean but thank heaven the water wasn't rough when we went!

I was a bit anxious about the meeting place, but it was easy to find.
The check-in process was smooth. It seems there are no changing rooms, so it's better to wear your swimsuit beforehand.
The rubber boat accommodates about ten people, but it felt stable and was not scary at all.
The guide spoke only English, but was friendly and made an effort to explain things using gestures, which was appreciated since we are not very good at English.
Racing across the Hawaiian waters was quite exhilarating. I was lucky to sit at the front and enjoy the speed.
Along the way, we encountered a pod of whales. It seems you can't always see them, so it was a great experience. A baby whale came quite close, and it was adorable.
We also saw dolphins playing and sea turtles.
As for snorkeling, as others have mentioned, the clarity of the water is amazing. Tropical fish are swimming very close to you.
Other tour participants brought their own snorkeling gear. If you're a bit nervous, it's better to prepare your own. If you're unsure about swimming, I recommend borrowing a life vest to enjoy it even more.
With the guide watching nearby, you can enjoy the Hawaiian waters relatively safely, so I recommend this tour.

Seeing the starry sky at Mauna Kea was my husband's dream. It came true. I was a bit anxious since it’s said to be taller than Mount Fuji, but it was fine. I brought a fleece and a thin down jacket, but they also lent me a very warm jacket, pants, and a cute penguin hat. It was really cold and the wind was strong, but the stars were amazing. It was moving. The tour guide was very pleasant and taught us many things, which was really great. The newlyweds were calling each other Yamachan and Macchan. I also recommended this tour to a friend who wants to go to the Big Island.

We loved the time paddeling the Kayaks it was easy and fun.
The snorkeling was the best!!!
The rock climbing and jumping was great as was the lava tube.
We also saw the dolfins which was great.
My only complaint was we got done too soon. I could have stayed our another 30 minutes at least.

Although it was the main highlight of my trip that I was looking forward to, unfortunately, it rained heavily.
Usually, there is a performance where King Kamehameha arrives by boat, followed by a dinner show under the starry sky, but it was suddenly changed to an indoor show.
We had to wait about an hour in the hotel lobby for the setup, but during that time, the MC kept us entertained with jokes and ukulele performances. Chatting with other foreign tourists also became a nice memory.
We moved to a banquet-like area inside the hotel for the show to begin. The performances of singing and dancing, along with audience participation during the cha-cha dance time, were wonderfully entertaining, and I was very satisfied.
The food featured traditional Hawaiian dishes as the main course. It was quite filling, and while tastes may vary, I enjoyed it very much.
We also had plenty of fun with participatory activities like hula lessons, but the hotel hallway felt a bit cramped. I wished we could have done it outside under the sky on the grass. However, it was such a fulfilling show program that I definitely want to participate again on a day with better weather!
I clearly remember the words, "For those visiting Hawaii for the first time, welcome; for those returning, you are friends (aikane); and for those coming for the third time or more, you are all family (ohana)," which warmed my heart.

Dear Mr. Anonymous,
Thank you for attending the luau show. Your comments almost brought tears to my eyes. While the rain is a blessing for us Polynesians, it often prevents us from showcasing the beauty of the ocean, the arrival of the king, and the imu show, which may leave our guests unsatisfied.
We would love for you to become part of our Ohana.
With heartfelt gratitude, love, and Aloha.
