I decided to participate in this luau show because it is conveniently held in the center of Kailua-Kona. Check-in is at 5:00 PM, and there is also an ABC Store in the center of Kona, which is not uncommon in Oahu, so I included some shopping as well. I arrived early and watched what seemed to be a local student canoe team's practice before heading to the venue.
I have participated in luau shows several times in Waikiki, but what I think is great about this luau show is that it takes place in nature. It features Tahitian dance, Hawaiian hula, Fiji dance, Samoan dance, and fire dance—there's a little bit of everything. I believe it offers good cost performance as well.

I went to PCC with my hubby and his family who are originally from Fiji. This was a lot of fun for my son and I and I learned quite a bit about my hubby's culture and the culture of surrounding islands.
The Samoan village was a lot more laid back than the other villages. They really try to get a laugh out of you. I don't remember the guys name... but he talked about his culture and he was making little jokes left and right.
The Fijian village was a lot more serious but just as fun. The did a lot of dances for us and even brought my mother-in-law on stage to dance with them. My son and I got fake Fijian tattoos that meant "warrior" and "queen" and since my hubby used to work at PCC we got a personal tour from him and his old boss.
The night show was very entertaining. Especially at the end with the Samoans brought the fire into the show.
I would definitely go again. We had a blast.

If it is raining for this event it will be moved indoors. Our Luau had to be moved indoors and it wasn't as much fun... Because they had to move the location it took longer to get started. The staff was very kind. If there is the chance of rain, try to reschedule for another night if possible! (The open bar helped make it all OK!)

I've been to Hawaii several times, but this was my first time participating. The seating is determined by the meal, but even the standard option is enjoyable enough. Since it's an outdoor stage, it was a bit cold for the season, and I didn't understand the language at all, but even with those factors, the powerful dances, comedic performances, and hula mixed together made the time fly by.
If I get tired of the beach, I would like to participate in various attractions at the Polynesian Cultural Center starting in the morning.

We participated in an optional tour that was very Hawaiian for my parents' first trip to Hawaii with our family of nine.
Since it included transportation and meals, we could enjoy our trip without worrying about arranging cars or making restaurant reservations, even if it got late at night.
My parents seemed to enjoy the Samoan show the most. The evening show "Horizon" was also amazing. The ice cream we had during the break of the show was delicious too.

If you're traveling to Hawaii, I think you should definitely experience this at least once. While water sports and shopping can be done in other places, shows like this are unique to Hawaii. Not only was there a language barrier, but all the procedures and arrangements were tailored for Americans, yet I still enjoyed it. I was satisfied with both the food and the show. It would have been nice if the leis and photos were included in the participation fee instead of having to pay for them on the spot, as I wanted to feel like I was receiving a gift.

It was convenient to hold the event at the hotel where we stayed. The weather was uncertain, but once you enter (they say no refunds even if it rains), seating is free, although the central seats are reserved and filled (there were reservation signs until the end, but many remained unoccupied). Most of the guests were foreigners, but there was no sense of discomfort. Upon entry, everyone could pour drinks from the bottles at the counter and enjoy unlimited drinks (there were no sample cocktails like in the photos). Before the meal, we all gathered to watch the ceremonial Kalua pig (steamed roast pork). The meal started buffet-style at each table, and the food was smoothly served. There was no explanation of the dishes, but they had a local flavor and were delicious.
The show began with the lighting of the torches, featuring Hawaiian and Tahitian dances, and there were plenty of opportunities for guest participation. The host, who had a different sense of engagement than what you would find in Japan, did a great job of energizing the show. Even though I didn't understand the English, it was an entertaining performance.

We highly recommend this luau - the whole family from age 7 to age 75 enjoyed it. The food was awesome, the gardens were beautiful and the dancing was amazing. I love that this is a family run business, and you can tell that they all really invest their time and care into every detail. Even grandpa Smith was out in the food line making sure the buffet was tidy and fresh. I was really impressed by the quality of the dancers! Some might say, though, that this is a bit on the "schmaltzy" side - it might not have the cosmopolitan feel of some of the other luaus, I certainly wouldn't say it was a romantic or upscale sort of thing - but I liked the old-time feel of it. Also, don't rush to get there, we arrived at the very beginning and took the tram ride through the gardens - then waited about an hour for the entertainment and refreshments to start.

We were not sure what to expect, but the experience was one we wouldn't have wanted to miss. Very well done by everyone involved. Mahalo!

The transportation to the Cultural Center was great and the driver amazing. He was very friendly and the drive was gorgeous - including a view of the famous 'China-Man's hat'. He was helpful once we arrived as well. We had a great experience on the canoe but wished we would have had more time to actually visit the individual villages before dinner began. I felt like we missed out a lot not being able to visit the exhibits. The dinner was wonderful although we had a toddler with us and opted out a bit early to roam the grounds and get some energy out rather than finish watching the dinner show. The evening show was amazing and made the whole trip worth it. We slept on the way home and were very happy with the experience.

I've lived in Hawaii and returned for many occasions, and Smith's Luau is absolutely the BEST Luau on any island at any price! The setting is absolutely gorgeous, the staff was very friendly and outgoing, the food was absolutely the best and there was plenty of it! Open mai-tai bar was a great value, dinner entertainment was fun but not overwhelming and the show afterward was a great Luau value. The thing that impressed me the most was Mr Smith, the owner, was available, visible and active in every part of the evening, from un-earthing the pig to singing and entertaining at dinner. I would HIGHLY recommend this event for anyone who visits Kauai - you WON'T be disappointed!
