It's been over 20 years since I started visiting the Big Island, but I've always hesitated to join the Mauna Kea summit tour. This is because the experience can be greatly affected by the weather! This time, I could only participate on May 3rd, so I made a reservation with a feeling of leaving it to luck! The result was a huge success! On the way, the conditions at the Onizuka Center were heavy clouds and light rain, but as we got closer to the summit, it turned into clear skies! The sunset view from the summit was truly breathtaking! The stargazing afterward was also wonderful! Who could pass up a tradition of Hawaiian tourism that has been in operation since 1947?! The Smith family was awesome. They were very friendly and kind. We were fortunate to be on the first boat of the day and in a small group. The morning was cool yet very comfortable. While we waited for our tour to start, the on-board talented trio of musicians were taking requests, joking and visiting with the passengers. Once on the river, the captain gave us an overview of the points of interests along the way as we passed stand-up-paddle boarders and kayakers enjoying the quiet river too. We were treated to a beautiful hula demonstration, native music and an improv hula lesson! After a short walk to the grotto, our "guide" explained some of the history and folk lore about the grotto, afterwards, they sang the Hawaiian Wedding song to us. It would be fun to go back again!

At Kaneana Cave, being a power spot, I felt something mysterious just by being nearby. It was great to have a Japanese guide, which allowed me to ask various questions. Thank you, Akima. I was also surprised by many things at the drive-in and restrooms we stopped at, which left a strong impression. I was lucky to encounter a Hawaiian monk seal lounging on the rocks and was able to observe it slowly. During snorkeling, we also saw a sea turtle resting on the ocean floor, which made the kids very happy. The weather was good, everything went smoothly, and I was very satisfied. The photos taken by the guide were also very nice.

It was my first trip to Hawaii, and since I hadn't made any reservations for transportation between the hotel and the airport, I had to use a taxi from the airport to the hotel. For the return trip, I booked this shuttle bus via my mobile phone.

It mentioned, "Please be sure to print the voucher and present it on the day of participation," so I was unsure how to print the voucher that arrived on my phone. However, I found out there was an office in Waikiki, and when I went there, they kindly printed it for me. It was a pleasant surprise that they spoke Japanese as well. I was grateful for that.

The important pickup also arrived on time. At the next pickup location, I had to wait because the people who were supposed to get on were not there, but it wasn't the driver's fault, and there was plenty of time, so it was not a problem. The driving afterward was also careful and good.

This was my first time using the service. Until now, the pickups to the hotel had been quite early, so I was ready 10 minutes in advance this time as well. However! Even 5 minutes before the scheduled time, no one had arrived; at the exact time, still no one… even 5 minutes late, no one showed up… I started to feel anxious. The voucher mentioned to call if there was a 15-minute delay, but I called at the 5-minute mark! The airport was really crowded, so I wanted to arrive quickly! Then, 10 minutes later, an empty van finally arrived. It was late!!! Those 5 or 10 minutes felt incredibly long. The Asian driver didn’t offer any apology or explanation, so it was unclear whether it was a delay or a mix-up. There was only one other group that boarded from a hotel closer to the airport, so we arrived at the airport sooner than expected. However, if there had been issues with picking up passengers at the maximum of five hotels, I don’t know what would have happened… The journey from the airport to the hotel didn’t go smoothly either, so I’m not considering a repeat. It’s more reassuring to go with a major company. I learned a lot from this experience.

アジア系のドライバーさんからは詫びや説明が無かったので、遅延なのか、誤手配かは不明です。
あと1組、空港寄りのホテルから乗り込んできただけだったので、空港へは思ったより早く着きましたが、
最大の５軒のホテルをまわって、乗る客がいたりいなかったり、など悶着があれば
どうなっていたかわかりません。。。
空港からホテルまでも すんなり行かなかったので、
もうリピートは考えておりません、大手さんの方が安心ですな　(*‘∀‘)

They picked me up at the hotel at 1:30 PM. There were three guests ahead of me, and they went to pick up others, totaling 11 for the tour. Actually, I had gone there 12 years ago with a rental car, but now you need a four-wheel drive, and bringing winter gear is a hassle, so I decided to use their service. I completed the card payment procedure with a reservation from Japan.

The dinner bento (Japanese food) and the salty miso soup were good, and the cocoa was delicious. Mr. Konno's service was great. Unfortunately, the clouds were thick, and the sunset wasn't as spectacular as I had hoped. However, the stargazing afterward was amazing. The explanation of the constellations using a laser pointer was particularly good, and he had a wealth of knowledge about the constellations.

There's a boom in constellation photography with DSLR cameras in Japan, so anyone interested should definitely go. However, a tripod is necessary, so it would be great if Masashi could prepare one for a fee.

In any case, it was worth $170.

ホテルに１３時半に迎えに来てくれた。３人先客会って他にも迎えに行き１１名にツア－だった。実は１２年前にレンタカーで行ったのだが、今は四輪車でなければならないし防寒具持って行くのも面倒なのでお世話になることにした。
日本から予約でカ－ド支払いの手続きを終わって行った。
夕食の弁当（日本食）と塩っけの味噌汁良かったし、ココアも美味しかった。
コンノさんの対応良かった。
残念ながら雲が厚く太陽落ちてからの燃え方はさほどではなかった。
そのあとの星空観察は最高だった。特にレ－ザポインタ－使用しての星座の説明は大変良かった。又とても星座の知識豊富。
日本でも一眼レフカメラの間では星座ブ－ムだから興味ある人は是非。
但し三脚必要なのでマサシさんの方で有料でもいいから準備してくれたらいいのだが。
とにかく＄１７０の価値あり。

Finally, as my time in Honolulu was coming to an end and I was just about to head back, I realized I had forgotten to book my shuttle service. The shuttle bus here was quite frequent and was very accommodating even for such a sudden request. Additionally, when the driver was loading our luggage onto the bus, he mentioned that if I lifted it, we wouldn't have to worry about the weight limit at the airport. This made us chuckle, as we were quite concerned about our luggage weight. I would definitely like to use this service again on my next trip.

Also, while we were in the car, he kept talking endlessly like Ichiro Furudate, but I would have appreciated a little bit of quiet time as well.

I'm not sure what was "deluxe" about this tour. We were picked up and taken on a "tour" of Honolulu first. This amounted to circling a couple of blocks where the King's palace and statue are. Then we went on to Pearl Harbor where we were informed that we would be switching to a different bus for our return to our resort! The 1st driver was difficult to understand when he was telling us what we were seeing. The 2nd driver was much better, although he seemed to talk about things as he saw them and would move onto something else before the rest of the bus caught up to what he had been talking about! I think there are cheaper options for a tour like this which accomplish the exact same thing!
