This was my first experience at an altitude of 4200 meters, and I was initially filled with worry about the health of my elementary and high school daughters. However, thanks to the advice and attentiveness of our guide, Mr. Fujitani, the tour turned out to be reassuring. The photos are indeed beautiful, but the emotions can only be understood by those who have seen it! It was such a shame to see the sunset, and how fast time flew by... I definitely want to go again. The stargazing afterward was not at the 2800-meter Onizuka Center, but at a completely dark area around 4000 meters, which was also very satisfying! I learned a lot from the detailed information about the constellations.

The guide was very kind.
The scenery was amazing.
The starry sky was also fantastic.
It was really cold!
I brought two pairs of gloves and earmuffs, so I was fine, but my friend who was with me got so cold during the stargazing that they were in "I want to get back to the car quickly!" mode. They do lend out winter clothing, but it’s better to prepare your own as well.
At that time, I wasn't climbing mountains, but now that I do, I wish I had gone to the "real summit."

It was cloudy, so I was worried about whether I could see the sunset and the starry sky, but the sunset was beautifully visible between the clouds. As time passed, the clouds cleared up, and in the end, I was able to see the stars well enough to be satisfied!!
It was moving!!
However, it was really cold, and I was a bit scared because I felt dizzy and had numbness in my hands and feet, which didn't go away for a while.
But I'm glad I participated. I want to try again when the weather is nice.

Last year, my son and his wife participated in a tour and said, "It was really great!" so I decided to join as well.
It was surprisingly cold for Hawaii, but they provided warm clothing, and the stunning scenery made me forget the cold!
You can overlook the sea of clouds and watch the sunset from the mountaintop, which looks like a sunrise despite being a sunset, so I used the photos taken there for my New Year's cards♪
The starry sky was also amazing, and I was able to refresh my mind so much that I forgot about the busyness in Japan.
If you're going to the Big Island, this is definitely a tour you can't miss!

The views of both the sunset and the starry sky were absolutely amazing. I specifically planned this Hawaii trip with this as the main focus, checking the new moon and making reservations, so the starry sky was perfect. The only slight disappointment was that we arrived near the summit a bit late, which left us with little time to enjoy the sunset. From there, we walked to the actual summit (for those who wanted to), but the sun had already set before we reached the top. Additionally, it was mentioned that binoculars would be provided, but in reality, there were only warm clothing and nothing like that. On the way back, I sat near the driver's seat, so I was able to hear various local information from the guide, which was very easy to understand. I recommend sitting near the driver's seat as it allows for more conversation.

The pickup was slightly delayed due to Hawaii time, and the borrowed warm clothing wasn't very clean, but other than that, I was very satisfied.
A highlight was our guide, Yamachan. Initially, a man from Osaka sitting next to me on the bus said, "You were lucky to have Yamachan. I've requested him five times." I thought, "Really?" but it turned out to be true luck.
His commentary on the bus was full of humor and hit all the interesting points, and he even made a stop at a supermarket for those who didn't rent a car. Yamachan even taught me how to choose Kona coffee.
As for the tour itself, the star observation was quite different from other companies. The observation with two large telescopes was great, but Yamachan and another staff member provided plenty of explanations about the constellations with a laser pointer, creating a natural planetarium experience. While other tour buses were heading down the mountain, our tour enjoyed the starry sky for over an hour.
It's not an exaggeration to say I was amazed at how bright the stars were, and even I, with poor dynamic vision, saw shooting stars seven times. I'm really glad I chose Masashi Tour. The bento was delicious too. My husband and I often talk about wanting to go again. I tell all my friends, siblings, and colleagues, "If you go, request Yamachan."
I'm sorry, I wanted to show you the photos, but I couldn't upload them properly.

The view from the summit of Mauna Kea was simply amazing. The sea of clouds in front of me, the sky gradually turning orange, and just before sunset, the sky looked like it was on fire. It was incredibly cold, to the point of being laughable, but that too is a great memory.
After that, I received a starry sky explanation at the Onizuka Center. Since it was in English, I understood less than half, but it was moving to see the surface of the moon through a telescope. While everyone was receiving the explanation about the stars, a mysterious flying object suddenly appeared, and even the guide exclaimed, "I have never seen!" and was extremely excited. They said it was probably a rocket, but the truth is uncertain.
The food was surprisingly (sorry) delicious, and I was satisfied.
I thought it would have been even better if there was a guide who could speak a little Japanese, not just English, so I could enjoy the starry sky a bit more.

Masashi Nature School is a wonderful company! Beyond the amazing tour, their attitude is fantastic. I've never experienced such an inspiring service in Japan. I wanted to share our experience for those considering this.
Also, thank you to everyone at Masashi Nature School, especially Leo, our guide on the day. I’ve become a big fan of your company!
↓
We signed up on our first day in Hawaii, August 22. When we were picked up at the hotel at 3 PM, we were informed of a shocking fact.
"Actually, there’s a wildfire today, and the roads are closed. We might not be able to go to the summit."
What?! I was in shock when they added,
"We will refund everything if you cancel, but since we’re here, I thought we could look for a place to see the stars. The roads might open up soon..."
With that suggestion, everyone in the tour got into the car. Apparently, it’s only once or twice a year that such an accident prevents access to the summit. I can’t believe we hit that low probability...
However, everyone was disappointed that we couldn’t see the sunset and stars from the summit, but our guide Leo was incredibly attentive.
He guided us through beach visits, Waipi'o Valley, and the Honokaa Theater one after another.
Before long, the mood in the car brightened, and we started to enjoy the places he was showing us.
At the drive-in, we were treated to donuts, and in Waipi'o, we had warm miso soup with our bento. He kept in touch to check if the road closures would be lifted and took us as far as possible.
We got out of the car at about 1500 meters and looked at the stars and the moon through a telescope. With the nearly full moon and the starry sky, I felt determined to go to the summit next time! But I also thought, this was fun in its own way.
After nearly six hours of guiding us around, I suddenly realized.
They had said they would refund the fee...

When we left the hotel, the weather was cloudy with occasional light rain. However, as we climbed Mauna Kea, the clouds cleared, and it became a beautiful sunny day. It was very moving to see the sunset from the 4,000-meter summit. I was able to see the shadow of Mauna Kea reflected in the clouds, as well as the Subaru Telescope and many other observatories nearby.
For stargazing, we enjoyed a sky full of stars with explanations at a spot a little lower down. It was the first time I saw someone use a laser pointer to indicate constellations in the night sky. During the astronomical observation, we were able to see the rings of Saturn through a telescope. The guide's witty explanations of the constellations were enjoyable, and time flew by quickly.
Even though it's Hawaii, 4,000 meters feels like a different world; it's cold. As noted, warm clothing is essential. I took it slow to avoid altitude sickness, but near the summit, I experienced a lack of oxygen, which slowed my movements. If I have the opportunity, I would like to see the autumn sky next time.

Stargazing was also fun! The starry sky was truly breathtaking, unlike anything I've ever seen. Even for someone like me who struggles with constellations, the explanation with the laser pointer made it very easy to understand. We saw the Southern Cross, Scorpius, the Big Dipper, and the Summer Triangle, among others. Since Tanabata was approaching, it was great to also see the Milky Way, Orihime, and Hikoboshi.

Recommend wearing jeans, sneakers and socks, and perhaps a light jacket to wear under the parka. Understand that it will be cold at these altitudes and be wary of altitude sickness if you are normally near sea level. Be well rested when you go and altitude shouldn't be a problem since a couple of rests (and restroom stops) as you ascend are provided. On the ride back after excellent stargazing and a hot drink and cookie, really nice and varied selections of music were played! I've never seen such wonderful sky views! I was moved by the scenery I had never seen before. The sun, radiating overwhelming light above the red-tinted clouds, was incredibly mystical. Also, the stargazing afterward was fortunate, as it seemed to be a clear night for viewing stars. I was able to see shooting stars, the Milky Way, and numerous constellations, making it feel just like a planetarium.
As for the climate, I had prepared hand warmers and a scarf thinking it would be colder, but it wasn't as chilly as I expected.
If I were to mention a downside, it might be unavoidable, but it seemed that the pickup was last, so my friend and I ended up sitting apart, and I had to sit alone for a long time during the journey. Since the scenery was so beautiful, I wish I could have enjoyed it with my friend while chatting...

Among the many sunset and stargazing tours available, I chose this one after reading reviews.
The weather and conditions were great, and the beauty of the sunset exceeded my expectations. The starry sky was so stunning that even after returning to the hotel late at night, I was too excited to fall asleep.
At first, I had trouble following the guide's explanations with the laser pointer and missed a few constellations, but overall, I was very satisfied. I had the chance to experience starlight and see Saturn's rings through a telescope, which was something I couldn't normally do, and I was extremely pleased. Personally, I think it would have been better to familiarize myself with the constellations for this time of year in advance. I was a bit worried about altitude sickness, but since we ascended gradually, it wasn't a problem at all. During the stargazing, they served us tea, which I think helped with hydration.
This may not be directly related to the tour, but during dinner, they served miso soup in bowls, and the bento boxes were not disposable but reusable, which showed the guide's effort and consideration for the environment.
If I have the opportunity again, I would love to join this tour once more.

Is this really Hawaii?? It was freezing at the summit of Kilauea, but there are definitely emotions there that you can't experience anywhere else.
The guide's explanations and thoughtfulness were thorough, and despite shivering from the cold, it became a wonderful memory.

This time, I participated in the Mauna Kea Sunset & Stargazing tour.
The staff provided excellent service, and it was a lot of fun, but the literal sunset and starry sky were absolutely the best...
Watching the sunset sink into the sea of clouds far below, with Haleakalā and other landmarks in the distance, was breathtaking. After that, seeing the Earth's shadow on the opposite side and the countless stars visible from about 3,500 meters made me wonder where they had been hiding all this time.
It truly made me feel like a part of this planet, and I would definitely love to participate in this tour again if I have the chance.

One notable aspect of Masashi's tour is the abundance of warm clothing options tailored for those who are sensitive to the cold. While other tours seemed to only provide knee-length jackets, this tour also offered overalls with insulated pants, allowing us to lie on the ground during stargazing after sunset. That said, women who are particularly sensitive to the cold might feel more comfortable bringing their own thicker hoodies or lightweight down jackets. I also brought leg warmers. However, the gloves I borrowed were quite thin, and I wished they were a bit warmer.
Additionally, there was a service offering warm tea during stargazing, which was truly thoughtful. The explanation of the constellations was clear, using a laser pointer, and it made me realize that we, as Japanese, can only see a small part of the constellations. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Southern Cross, which I thought could only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere. The guide, Mr. Yama, who explained the constellations, was very entertaining, making it a tour filled with laughter.

On April 2nd, I participated with my family of four. It was the perfect day for stargazing, being the third day after the full moon. The clear sky without any clouds added to the excitement when we got off the bus; it was an indescribable feeling.
As the stars seemed to be falling around us, we received thorough explanations. My son had just finished his junior high school entrance exams, so he had retained a lot of knowledge about astronomy, making it a wonderful experience to connect theoretical knowledge with reality. We even got a good look at the rarely visible Cancer constellation.
We confirmed Saturn through the telescope, but it appeared small; the one we saw at the planetarium in Tokyo was larger (perhaps due to the telescope's precision???).
The sunset at Mauna Kea before that was also stunning, with oranges reflected in the clouds and the indescribable colors of the sun's afterimage... everything was wonderful. Additionally, our guide, O, provided a wealth of knowledge backed by data, and his modest yet friendly demeanor made for a truly great tour.
With all these three elements combined, it became an unforgettable Mauna Kea tour for us.
One disappointing aspect was that we had to wait 20 minutes during the tour pickup. This was not the guide's fault, but rather due to some participants not keeping time. Since it was a group activity and we were participating online, unexpected delays can cause anxiety. I encourage those who will participate in the future to keep time so that everyone can enjoy the experience comfortably.

I saw many comments about how wonderful the starry sky is, so I decided to participate and see it for myself. It was even more amazing than I expected, and I was truly moved. Above me was a sky full of stars, the Milky Way, and shooting stars, and I was able to see Saturn and the Pleiades through a telescope, which was breathtaking. The sunset from the summit was also fantastic. The sunrise I saw on Maui was also moving, so next time I definitely want to see it from the summit of Mauna Kea.

I would not recommend this activity unless you've already done most everything else on this island. Everyone we talked to after getting back was dis-appointed. It sure isn't what I thought. First the transportation isn't very convenient. Getting to and from the pick up points should be improved. Next on the way up the mountain we stopped at a gift/visitor shop. Thats where we had a cardboard box dinner in the van. Someone else said bring a sandwich. I also recomend that. Going on up the hill. The observatories we only got to see from the outside, and was just told about them. We did watch a nice sunset at 13,780 feet of elevation. It was a nice view although I like the sunsets over the beach better. After the sun went down we left and went down to about 7000 feet elevation and they set up 11inch Celestron telescopes. Nice telescopes, i have a friend who has one. We saw several stars and clusters ect. Beautiful clear sky. Chitchen-Itza ruins in Mexico was just a clear a
