Big Island
I was a bit anxious about the English guide, but the guide was great, and I was able to enjoy myself with a little Japanese. Horseback riding was a first experience for my whole family, and I thought we might need a bit of practice, but we were just taught how to ride and control the horse, and then we started riding. It turned out to be a really fun time.
After about two hours of horseback riding, my groin started to hurt. Also, the microbus ride to Waipi'o was enjoyable.
I went horseback riding in Waipi'o Valley, which is considered a sacred place for the people of Hawaii. We drove down a narrow, steep slope in a 4WD vehicle and rode horses in a secluded area that felt almost like a jungle. After a brief explanation, we got right into riding. We crossed a river and went through the forest; it truly felt like an adventure. My horse was named Sweet Oakley. He was well-trained and listened carefully to the instructions. My 8 and 11-year-old children also had a great time.
This was my third horseback riding experience in Hawaii. I stayed in Waikoloa and met at the location, but I had no problems getting there using the navigation. The instructions were all in English, but just like on Oahu, important commands like "Don't eat grass!" were communicated in Japanese when the horses acted freely.
While enjoying the great nature of Waipi'o Valley, we crossed rivers and observed sweet potato fields, wild coffee, and avocado trees, which provided ample riding time. By the time I got off the horse, my knees were shaking (laughs).
My dog followed along during the ride, happily going into the grass and playing in the river, which was very cute. The weather was bad, and there was heavy rain on the way to the stables, so I was worried about whether we would go ahead despite the rain gear being available, but it stopped raining by the time we set off on the horses. I would have been completely satisfied if it hadn't rained!
My husband and I moved to Kailua-Kona last year and are still in discovery mode, so we were happy to play tourist for a day to join this tour. Although the rides were long (it is a big island), the stops were all interesting and worthwhile, the other guests were friendly and engaged, and - notwithstanding all of our pre-move diligence and studying - we learned a ton from our fabulous tour guide, Kent. Kent was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, engaged, warm, and courteous - we thoroughly appreciated the positive impact he had on the day's adventures.
As a beginner, I had some anxiety about riding, but since three assistants accompanied us, I was able to ride without any issues after just learning the commands for right, left, and stop before mounting. I think it's a course that beginners can enjoy thoroughly. Although it was a tour in the rain, I had a great time. As mentioned in the comments, the helmet and raincoat had a bit of a sweaty smell, so I wore my own hat under the helmet!
As other reviews have mentioned, the helmet was very smelly (surprised).
The guide only speaks English, but he was friendly and attentive to everyone, helping us when we were in trouble, so the kids were able to enjoy horseback riding without anxiety.
You can bring a water bottle, as it can fit in the saddlebag for the horse, but there wasn't really time to drink, haha.
I had a wonderful experience.
I recommend it.
Due to the closure of the summit of Mauna Kea, I was shocked to find that the sunset viewing at the summit was canceled. However, the beautiful sunset and stargazing at around 2000 meters elevation were amazing. First, before the sunset viewing, our guide, Mr. Ishikawa, asked if we had a preferred spot, and he took us to the Aura Cave, a power spot, where we felt energized. Next, we visited Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, a place that is not easily accessible on your own. For the sunset, Mr. Ishikawa took us to his hidden spot. To our surprise, six turtles welcomed us before the sunset. With just four of us on the tour and six turtles, it was incredible. We received good luck from the turtles and then proceeded to stargaze.
It was wonderful. The sky was filled with stars, without a single cloud. I've never seen so many stars; the Milky Way was clearly visible, and I could have looked at the sky all night long. I believe this is definitely worth seeing. If I have the opportunity, I would love to go again.
- I was really impressed by the attention to detail in various places; it was very thoughtful. I highly recommend this tour.
- The bento that came with the tour was delicious and completely different from those offered in other optional tours (which are often inedible). I mistakenly thought the provided bento would be unappetizing and ate beforehand, which was a waste.
- I participated in July and had heard it would be cold at the summit, so I prepared a down vest, earmuffs, and gloves. However, just layering the down jacket and long pants provided by the tour was sufficient.
- This time, it was a full moon, so the starry sky wasn't that great. I would like to participate again during a new moon.
I had always been unable to make a reservation for just one person, but I finally got to participate. I was a bit worried since it was only in English, but as long as I understood how to use the rope, it was fine. Even if you don't understand English, you can generally figure things out by watching the guide's movements.
I had previous experience with horseback riding, so it felt familiar. Riding the horse is fun, and there are beautiful views, including entering the river, but it was just a U-turn in a place without anything special before heading back.
It was challenging since it was sudden, but it's also possible to walk there, so I thought I would try walking next time and take it slow.
This was most definitely the highlight of my families trip, the scenery is beyond amazing. Nothing like i have EVER seen before and the horses are absolutely amazing. It was my kids and my husband’s first time riding and the horses were great for them! Actually made them fall in love with horseback riding just like I am! So thank you to the ranch for letting us experience that as a family! I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend doing this on your vacation or even if you live there and looking for something to do!
Guides were thorough in instructions so all of us felt confident with our horses. We were helped on and off, which was appreciated. We were given the opportunity to cantor and gallop if we wished. The guides were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fun! The green hills and cool breezes were lovely, did not use our jackets although the sun & wind were strong. They recommended a fun place, Fish and Hog, for lunch following the ride. I would recommend this ranch and ride.
The sunset was amazing! I love traveling to various places and watching sunrises and sunsets, but this was the BEST sunset. I don't think there will be a sunset that surpasses this one. The experienced staff took beautiful photos, and I really appreciate that they are available for download.
As for stargazing, since it was a full moon the next day, there may not have been a lot of stars visible. If I go again, I would like to choose a time around the new moon or when the moon is not out. They provided a lot of explanations about the constellations while observing Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon through a telescope.
The scenery of the valley explored on horseback was very beautiful, and it was a fun experience with a bit of thrill. You can also see power spots. The guide speaks English and some broken Japanese. Contrary to appearances, they are very polite. Even beginner riders in the family were satisfied!
The guide was a foreigner and very kind, and I was able to understand the explanations in English perfectly. Although the photos were paid, they took many for us.
There were 9 zip lines, and I really enjoyed it! I think it would have been even better if there were some longer ones.
The day we experienced it, the weather was nice, making for a pleasant tour.
Four years ago, I participated in the same course tour with another company, and this was my second Mauna Kea tour. The tour guide's explanations were very interesting and informative. During lunch, there was a service of warm miso soup and hot drinks. At the summit of Mauna Kea, they took many photos of each group during the stargazing session. Moreover, they upload those photos to their website, so you can download them later. I think this is especially a nice service for solo travelers who can't take their own pictures. I used to think there wasn't much difference between companies, but I realized this time that there is a significant difference. If I have the chance next time, I would definitely like to request this tour again.
It was a horseback riding experience in a place that is usually not accessible in Waipi'o Valley, allowing us to enjoy the magnificent nature of Hawaii, which was fantastic! The staff were very accommodating, and they made sure that even the children who couldn't speak English had a great time. (Adults should understand a little bit.) The travel time to and from the location is about 30 to 40 minutes, and the riding time is around an hour and a half, which felt just right. I want to go again!
It was hot since it was July. There were rentals for coats and boots, but they weren't necessary. Even when it drizzled a bit along the way, it was fine. It's better to apply sunscreen (I ended up getting really sunburned because I didn't). Each horse has its own personality, and the horse I rode didn't listen to me, but that's part of its charm.
The tour itself was incredibly exciting. However, personally, I almost experienced altitude sickness. I had quite a bit of headache and shortness of breath, but after returning to the hotel and sleeping, I felt better right away. Even with the risk of altitude sickness, I think it's a tour worth going on. The starry sky and sunset are both wonderful.
Our family had a great time on this horse ride through the peaceful Waipi'o valley. We learned a lot about it from our very knowledgeable guides (they are also residents of the valley!). No riding experience is necessary but our 11 y.o. daughter has taken lessons, and we've done a few other, similar tours. It's all just walking pace (no trotting) but you go through small rivers and streams and see some beautiful vegetation and waterfalls. We were so glad not to have to walk the steep and dangerous path from the main (paved) road down to the valley floor where the stable is. The view from the top is spectacular! We went during an unusually dry and hot spell, so if you go after a rainfall, I'm sure it's even more incredible. What's especially nice is the tour is small (our group was 10 people), so you get highly personalized attention. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and bugspray! All in all, I would highly recommend.
It was really great.
The weather was favorable, so we could see a lot of stars. It was the best stargazing experience of my life.
The guide was fun, reliable, and there were no complaints.
They also took care of my health, and since it was a trip while acclimatizing to high altitude, that was good.
The only downside was that the bento was a bit mediocre. The miso soup was incredibly delicious.
This was an amazing excursion for our family! We have visited Hawaii several times, but this was our first horseback riding experience. It definitely did NOT disappoint! The guides were patient and helpful throughout the trip. They gave a detailed safety briefing and Jaime took time with my younger daughter to practice a few commands so she would feel more comfortable. The views during our ride were beautiful and breathtaking at times! We had a great time at the waterfall as well. There was plenty of time to swim, play in the waterfall, kayak and use the paddle boards. They also had life jackets if needed. I could go on forever about how much we loved this trip! I highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a fun way to see the beauty of this island.
The guide was very kind, and it was a fun time! The talk and the photography were full of enthusiasm and it was really great. The cocoa made under the starry sky was very delicious and warming! The bento wasn't very tasty, though > < (I'm sorry...)
This was a great experience for the entire family. Our two girls did not have any riding experience and were really nervous. The guides gave a very detailed safety briefing and made sure the girls were comfortable before the trip started. The guides were always close by to help them guide the horses when needed. The scenery on the entire trip was the most beautiful I have seen since being on the island. The stop at the waterfall was incredible. We had plenty of time to enjoy the paddle boards, kayaks and swim under the waterfall. This experience was the highlight of our trip and I highly recommend to those considering it. I recommend wearing pants if you have them.
I had a great time riding horses and crossing the river while enjoying nature. The horses were so cute! It might be a good idea to bring insect repellent!
This time, we were blessed with good weather, and the sunset and stargazing from above the clouds were wonderful. I was captivated by the gradient of colors changing from yellow to deep red, forgetting the passage of time. During stargazing, I was able to see the North Star, the Southern Cross, the Milky Way, and several shooting stars, which reminded me of the starry skies at Yokote Mountain where I used to stay during my student days. Although I had a view of about 180 degrees, this time it was a full 360 degrees☆☆☆☆☆. The guide's explanations of the constellations were easy to understand, and thanks to that, I was able to grasp how to observe constellations, which I found confusing in elementary school science. I had no idea that Scorpio was so large. I'm thrilled that I've now been able to identify constellations beyond just the Big Dipper.
This is quite an old post, but... I wanted to do some stargazing, so I signed up for this tour in December! I already knew it had snowed while I was in Japan, and when I received a call before the pickup time, I was informed that "due to the snowfall at the summit of Mauna Kea, stargazing might not be possible." I appreciated the advance notice, as it allowed me to prepare mentally.
On the day of the tour, there were quite a few clouds, and it seemed like the weather was going to be a challenge for deciding where to watch the sunset. However, our guide worked really hard, checking the cloud conditions and exchanging information with other guides, and we were able to move around and successfully view the sunset! We also got some wonderful photos taken!
The guide made sure to use the digital cameras and DSLRs that participants had to capture the best shots. Before stargazing, we had some time for shopping, exploring wild plants, and enjoying a lunch break. The warmth of the miso soup was comforting in the cold! At such a high altitude, the air felt different from what you would expect in Hawaii.
Then it was time for stargazing... or so we thought, but unfortunately, there had been snowfall near the summit, and the road was closed, so we couldn't go to the top. It was really disappointing, but the stars were beautiful even from the mid-level area where we waited! Since we couldn't do the stargazing, we also received a partial refund.
However, thanks to our unique and entertaining guide who worked hard throughout the tour, I had a very enjoyable time! If I get the chance again, I would love to try for a second time! Thank you so much to the guide who put in so much effort from start to finish!
I was worried because it was cloudy on the day, but by night it cleared up, and I was able to see the starry sky, which was my main goal! The guide was knowledgeable about cameras and taught us how to take great photos of the night sky.
I participated in a two-and-a-half-hour morning course. There were a total of four participants, including us and a foreign family. The guide spoke only in English, but spoke slowly and clearly, so there were no particular difficulties. The horses were well-trained and even did canter. The weather was great, and I thoroughly enjoyed horseback riding in the beautiful scenery, which was very healing.
The guides where friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The area was gorgeous, pictures do not do it justice. The horses knew what they were doing so it was simple for all levels of riding. I highly recommend anyone on the Big Island to make the trip to tour Waipio Valley!
Had a relaxing and fun day with the Kahua Ranch horseback group! Went with my husband and two teenage sons. My youngest son has high functioning Autism and was given a gentle sweet horse. The ranch is beautiful and has many types of terrain to ride across. The ranch is a working ranch with cattle and cows with calves. There are also sheep spread around the property. The guides are knowledgeable and fun and support the guests with instruction and help throughout the ride. This is a gentle relaxing ride for all skill levels. I would recommend this excursion for folks wanting a calm relaxing ride threw the pastures of Big Island! (The cows get all the best views on Big Island!)
