Fewer Japanese participants joined the tour, and since it was an English tour, I was disappointed that I couldn't understand the explanations during the bus ride. We took a 45-minute break at the Onizuka Visitor Center to acclimatize to the altitude, but there was no place to change, so I changed in the restroom. I wore Heattech top and bottom, jeans, and a fleece, with a light down parka on top. At the summit, I was lent ski pants and a warm jacket, so I was well-prepared for the cold. My hands were only cold from holding the camera.

The meal consisted of sandwiches distributed at the Visitor Center, which were very delicious, but there were no drinks provided. Since it was drizzling, I didn't feel like sitting at the outdoor tables and chairs, so I stood and ate in a corner of the center. During the stargazing, I enjoyed warm cocoa.

I was very satisfied with both the sunset and the starry sky, but I'm wondering how to receive the photo data taken during sunset and stargazing. There has been no email contact since the next day. I called but reached voicemail and left a message...

食事は、ビジターセンターで配られるサンドイッチでとても美味しかったのですが、ここでは飲み物無し。小雨模様だったので、外のテーブル＆椅子に座る気になれず、センターの隅っこで立って食べました。星空観察の時には温かいココアを頂きました。
サンセットも星空も大満足だつたのですか、日没時と星空鑑賞の際に撮って下さった写真データをどう受け取るのか？翌日以降、メール連絡もありません。電話しても留守電で、メッセージは残したのですが…

The sunset and stargazing were both amazing. Especially the stargazing, as the moon wasn't out, allowing us to see the Milky Way clearly. The only complaint I have is that the van we used for transportation was full and quite cramped. The travel time was long, and the roads were bad, so I hope this can be improved. (The driver was also lamenting about it...)

I had a really fun time, sometimes trotting and sometimes slowly herding cattle in the magnificent scenery.

It seems that horses have various personalities; there were horses that could walk almost automatically for children, while adults had to give proper instructions, and larger horses for well-built foreigners. There were a total of 10 participants, and they selected horses that suited each person, explaining, "This horse is..." when it was time to ride.

The explanations were in English, but they spoke slowly for the Japanese participants, so it was relatively easy to understand (the difference in speaking speed for native speakers was quite noticeable, haha). However, if it's your first time riding, it might be tough if you can't understand and speak English well.

雄大な景色の中、時に駈歩したり、牛を追ったり(ゆっくり)、すごく楽しい時間を過ごせました。
馬は、色々性格があるらしく、子供にはほぼ自動運転で歩ける子、ちゃんと指示出さないといけない子には大人、体格のいい外国の方には大きな子…と合計10名の参加でしたが、それぞれに合わせた馬を選択してくれ、乗る時に「この子は…」説明してくれました。
英語での説明でしたが、日本人にはゆっくり喋ってくれていたので比較的わかりやすかったです(ネイティブの方に対するトークスピードの差が凄かった笑)。
ただ…初めての乗馬だと、ちゃんと英語を理解して喋れないとキツいかもしれません。

I have visited the Big Island of Hawaii many times, but this time I participated because my child turned 16. I was impressed by the beauty of the stars, the vastness of the sky, and its size. They took family photos for us, and since we were the only Japanese people there, they spoke to us not only in English but also in Japanese. During the star explanation, they divided us into English and Japanese groups with the same tour company (we ended up having a private experience), which made it very easy to understand, humorous, and enjoyable. I'm glad I participated.

Note: It’s colder than I expected.

何度もハワイ島に来ていますが、子どもが16歳になったため参加をしました。
星のきれいさ、空の広さ、大きさに感動しました。

Su-san's guidance and thoughtfulness were wonderful. The photos we received were truly impressive! What a great photographer! They were very beautiful.

This was our second time as a couple, and our first time bringing our son.

Since the moon rose before 10:00 PM, it didn't affect our experience at all, and we were able to see the Milky Way clearly. It became a great memory for our family.

The BLT was delicious too.

I liked how you start small for those who a less experienced and afraid of heights. Our guides were awesome in explaining everything and giving history of the area. The funniest part was when Angela hid behind some bushes and started making pig sounds, causing one of the participants to jump back! LOL! I was able to fulfill my dream of seeing the sunset and starry sky from Mauna Kea volcano. The explanations about the observatory and celestial bodies were very detailed, and I was able to take many photos. The sandwiches and cocoa provided along the way were very delicious and left a strong impression!

We had a great time as a family and would highly recommend this group. The guides are amazing!! Henry, Keanu and the others are so kind, positive and tell great stories. Our Kids ages15 and 12 throughly enjoyed it and kept saying “again”…. When going through bumpy, rocky areas. The UTV’s are in great shape and have great suspension (doesn’t mean you won’t feel the bumps). We felt safe the entire time. We would recommend to anyone wishing to have a great outdoor family adventure.

This is our second trip up the mountain with Mauna Kea Stargazing Tour & Sunset Adventure. We were so awed in 2015, we wanted to take it all in again. Of course, we never expected it to be even better than our first experience. Our host/driver/guide, Kea, was excellent! His knowledge of the land, the people, and the culture was extensive and well-delivered. We wanted to listen to him for hours more! Kea's respect and request, in Hawaiian, to visit the mountain was moving. It reminded us we were guests, and to honor those before us and where we were. Stepping out of the van for stargazing took our breath away. The stars are so brilliant. Kea had so much information to share on each of the selections he chose to show us through the mighty telescope. We saw Polaris, the Southern Cross, and the Milky Way all in the same sky. Quit searching and choose Kea with Mauna Kea Stargazing! Best in Class!

On the day I participated, we were divided into a group of only Japanese participants and another group from other countries, so I was able to have a guide in Japanese. Even as a woman participating alone, I had a great time. Our driver and guide, Stefan, was fluent in Japanese and provided an enjoyable tour while also taking wonderful photos. Thank you, Sue.

The temperature, weather, and wind were all perfect that day, but since this is all dependent on nature, it's just luck. However, I've heard that there can be differences in weather stability depending on the season, so it would be good to research that before planning. Stargazing is not suitable when the moon is bright, so if you can choose your dates, I recommend planning around the moon phase.

We only observed a few stars through the telescope (just Venus on that day), so you might want to consider that as a bonus. However, there were plenty of explanations using a pointer, and I believe the beauty of the stars here is something you can't see anywhere else. It felt like a dream to be able to go up to 4,205 meters by car without experiencing altitude sickness. I'm glad I participated!

星空観測は月が明るいと不向きなので、日程を選べる場合は、月齢を見て計画されると良いと思います。
望遠鏡で星を観るのは、ほんの一部（この日は金星のみ）でした。なので、これは おまけと考えた方がいいかも知れません。
でも、ポインターを使っての説明は沢山してくださるし、ここの星の美しさは他では見られないものだと思います。
こんな風に高山病になることなく、車で4205メートルまで行けることが夢のようでした。

I participated in the tour with my parents in their 60s, so I was a bit anxious, but the guide was very attentive, taking care of everything from altitude sickness to restroom breaks.

Although the tour was primarily in English, the guide provided support in Japanese at key points, which made it very enjoyable! (Every time we got off the bus, he would casually explain things in Japanese, including information about restrooms, safety tips at the summit, and even jokes! ✨)

During the sunset, he took many wonderful family photos against the backdrop of the sea of clouds and the sunset, as well as some funny solo shots! He used a professional camera, so the starry sky looked incredibly beautiful (there was even a bonus of the faint red crater from the volcano that erupted a few days ago!). The photos were shared instantly via AirDrop!

Thanks to the stunning scenery and our guide Shotaro, I made some truly wonderful memories! Thank you so much! ✨

When we went to pick up, our names weren't on the list, but there just happened to be two seats available, so we were able to get on. They said something like, "Lucky you, there were seats available!" which shows they have no management at all. Plus, there weren't enough meals, so we couldn't eat. (laughs)
By the way, there’s no telescope rental. You just quickly look at the stars, take a quick photo, and that’s it. It feels like, where did the photos go? I wish I could get a refund.

He was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to explain Hawaiian culture and pointed out things in our drive that were informative.

The stargazing portion of our tour was an incredibly unique and awe-inspiring experience. Tod was a knowledgeable guide and took us to a dark and remote location in Mauna Kea, perfect for stargazing. With the use of his personal high-quality telescope, binoculars and a powerful laser pointer, we were able to see constellations, planets, and even faint nebulae. Tod also shared interesting facts and stories about the night sky, making the experience both informative and enjoyable.

Tod even made the experience memorable by playing The Planets by Gustav Holst, its those little details, that made this tour the highlight of our Big Island Vacation.

Overall, this tour is a must-do for anyone who wants to see the stars in all their glory accompanied by our an amazing guide Tod.
