I participated in the morning tour on May 22nd. The Fair Wind boat is located about 15-20 minutes south by car from downtown Kona at Keauhou Bay. The morning in Kona is incredibly pleasant, and driving while overlooking the Pacific Ocean is the best. After parking in the designated lot, I checked in. After showing my voucher and signing the waiver, I received my boarding pass and went to get my snorkel. There was a brief explanation before boarding, and then we set sail. Be sure to grab a seat on the second floor and soak up the sun. The sun in Kona is no joke, so make sure to apply sunscreen to avoid getting burned. I spotted a wild dolphin, but it seems that whales can be seen during the season. While enjoying a light breakfast of muffins, cake, Hawaiian juice, and coffee, we arrived at Kealakekua Bay in about 30 minutes. In the morning, the winds are light, so we mostly use the engine, but on windy afternoon tours, we can enjoy quiet sailing with the sails up. Once we arrived, the captain gave us safety instructions and explained how to use the snorkel before we entered the water. The sun was hot, so getting into the water felt like heaven. I was first amazed by the coral reef forest. Since it's a marine life conservation area, the water clarity is outstanding, and you can see the fish very well. What's particularly impressive is that the depth suddenly increases to about 10-20 meters from the coral reef to the inner bay, so when you go out, you can't see the bottom. The sensation of sunlight pouring down to the deep blue bottom is unforgettable. Kealakekua Bay is the famous place where Captain Cook landed, and it's a historically significant bay where white people "discovered" Hawaii in the 18th century. It is said that Captain Cook's ship was surrounded by 1,000 to 1,500 Hawaiian canoes upon landing. The season when they landed was just the time of "peace and restoration," and fortunately, they received a warm welcome. However, three months later, when he tried to leave Hawaii and returned to Kealakekua Bay due to rough seas, the season had already changed, and he was welcomed by 3,000 warriors. They attempted to kidnap an ali'i (chief rank royalty) but failed and were brutally killed. Unfortunately, we cannot land at the Captain Cook monument. After snorkeling, we relaxed while enjoying a barbecue on the boat. We could enjoy water slides and diving, having fun in true Hawaiian style. We set sail around noon and took about 20 minutes to reach Keauhou.

A beautiful boat, American-style breakfast and lunch, and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters! Most participants were Westerners, and we were the only Japanese, but it was actually fun to communicate in broken English. However, I was quite disappointed that we didn't see the dolphins we were hoping for... The captain did his best to find them, but it's just luck, so there's nothing we can do about it. Since I do scuba diving, just being on the surface isn't quite enough for me (laughs).

The excitement of encountering small fish in shallow waters during my first snorkeling experience in Hawaii. The thrill of meeting fish at the bottom of the sea, about 10 meters deep, during a scuba diving experience. This time, it surpassed all of that.
As someone who struggles with equalizing pressure, I found the discomfort during the experience diving slightly overwhelming, and since then, I had stayed away from the ocean floor. This time, I thought of participating in a submarine tour. It exceeded my expectations. In the submarine, I could dive as deep as I wanted without any discomfort and thoroughly enjoy the beautiful, fantastical underwater world. Although it seemed like we were submerged for 30 minutes, I was so captivated that it flew by in no time. Sparkling corals, small fish, some unidentified sea creatures, and even a couple of dolphins! According to the guide, this was rare and lucky.
The town of Kailua-Kona had a relaxed, harbor town vibe that I enjoyed, but more than that, I was completely satisfied with the beautiful, fantastical underwater world of Kailua-Kona.

I participated in a luau, one of the highlights of my three-day stay in Hawaii. A friend who calls himself a Hawaii expert told me that if I'm in Hawaii, it would be a waste to just have dinner every night, so I joined the luau, and I really enjoyed it. I'm glad I participated. While luaus are not very familiar to us Japanese, they are said to be the most popular among American travelers in Hawaii. I’ve heard that luaus originally were ceremonial feasts for Polynesian royal families or celebrations for the growth of children in general families, but for me, it was an exotic dinner with a Polynesian entertainment show that provided a sense of extraordinary experience for one night in Hawaii.
The Island Breeze Luau I attended was held on the beach next to the Kailua-Kona harbor. Upon entry, I received a drink, and after a while, there was the traditional ceremony of unearthing the roasted pig, which brought an indescribable sense of the extraordinary. After that, it was time for the buffet-style dinner, where I piled my plate with my favorite Hawaiian pork dish (kalua pork) and various dishes I had never seen before, eating until I could hardly move. Some dishes were delicious, while others made me wonder, "What is this?" but overall, I was very satisfied. As the sun began to set, the full-fledged Polynesian show started. The host's English was only half understandable for me, as I struggle with the language, but the Polynesian show featuring men and women unfolding one after another to the lively music of the backing musicians was breathtaking. From hula dancing to fire dancing, I was captivated by the charm of the exotic female dancers. With wonderful music, enchanting dances, a Hawaiian dinner, and the beach and sunset in Hawaii, thank you so much, Island Breeze Luau. As I passed by numerous restaurants in the streets of Kailua-Kona on my way back, I thought to myself that I was glad I participated in the luau instead of just having a meal at a restaurant. Maybe I am already a Hawaii expert?

It was my first time on the Big Island of Hawaii. As expected, it was a lava island, and I was surprised by the differences from Oahu. Since I stayed at the King Kamehameha Hotel, the Island Breeze Luau was conveniently held right in the backyard by the beach. Upon entering, I was presented with a shell lei by a Hawaiian beauty for a commemorative photo. People here are even more laid-back than on Oahu. When I was shown to my seat and looked back, there was the Pacific Ocean! Watching the waves crash against the lava rocks, I understood why King Kamehameha chose the Big Island as his home. I also got to see the imu ceremony (the ritual of taking out a pig that has been steamed for hours in an underground oven), and just as I was enjoying some drinks, we were served a royal feast buffet-style. The banquet, with the cool Kona breeze blowing, felt just like being with King Kamehameha himself. After we finished eating, the Polynesian show began. First, I was dazzled by the Tahitian fast hip-shaking dance, then overwhelmed by the Maori war dance, and finally enchanted by the beauty of the Hawaiian hula. It was an hour that flew by in no time. The finale was, without a doubt, the Samoan fire knife dance. They performed tricks that looked incredibly hot, exciting the audience. Throughout the show, friendly locals brought us drinks, and I was very satisfied. I believe it's a show that anyone, whether families, couples, or friends, can enjoy with peace of mind. If you have the chance to go to the Big Island, I highly recommend it!

I participated in the morning tour on August 19. Boarding started at 9 AM. As soon as we boarded and looked down at the sea, we saw a large school of fish. Chased by five big fish, we observed how the school changed shape, which heightened our expectations for this tour. After leaving the school of fish behind, the boat set sail and arrived at our destination in about an hour. The water clarity was outstanding! Even from the surface, we could see the shadows of many fish. Here, the crew provided explanations about snorkeling in English. And then, it was finally time to go into the water. Because the Fair Wind boat is large, the nearby water temperature was cold. However, it was warm in the shallows when we swam with fins, so it was fine. There were many tropical fish in yellow and black, and the coral was incredibly beautiful. I even found an eel hiding in the coral. After swimming for a while, when I started to feel tired, I noticed smoke coming from the boat. Yes, it was the smoke from grilling cheeseburger patties. Tempted by the delicious smell, I returned to the boat and enjoyed a burger before heading back into the water again. Alternatively, you could play on the boat's slide. Adults were jumping in with the kids too. The boat set sail around 12:20 PM for the return trip, but there was still fun to be had on the way back. They lowered about four fishing rods from the boat, and one of them caught a fish. It seemed to be quite a big one, and the excitement grew among everyone, but what came up was surprisingly a slim fish that looked like a larger version of a barracuda. Then, there was a video shoot on the first floor of the boat where everyone was filmed that day. After that wrapped up and as we got closer to the port, we spotted five wild dolphins playing in the waves created by the boat! However, I had left my camera on the second floor of the boat and couldn't capture them on film. Soon we reached the port, and as the waves disappeared, the dolphins swam away. Most people didn’t notice them. We probably saw them for about a minute. If you're lucky, you might see them, so be sure to bring your camera wherever you go. It was truly a highly satisfying tour. In Kona, the wind picks up in the afternoon, and the waves can get a bit rough, so I recommend the morning tour. The crew only speaks English. Besides us, there were two groups of Japanese families spanning three generations and two girls traveling together. Most participants were from Western countries. If you're concerned about sunburn and want to sit on the first floor during the boat ride, make sure to check in by 8:30 AM and line up.

Aside from our family of five and a family that seemed to be from the Middle East, almost everyone else was white. I tried to communicate with the white family sitting next to us and an elderly couple, but I could only catch fragmented words I learned long ago. From what I gathered, the husband had been to Osaka for business. They were on a trip from the mainland U.S. to Hawaii on a ship anchored offshore. I reflected that I need to take English conversation classes when I return home.
Before long, we arrived at our destination, Pawai Bay. We were lent masks and fins and entered the water. Floating on the surface and peering down, I saw a variety of beautiful fish and some delicious-looking sea urchins. It was amazing, and after drifting for a while, I returned to the boat and devoured a sandwich filled with ham and salad, feeling very satisfied.
It was my first time snorkeling, and it was an experience that I could easily get addicted to. By the way, I really want that stick-like float!
