Oahu
This was my first time participating in an English tour, and while my language skills are decent, I was bothered by the poor organization. After arriving, we were dropped off at a McDonald's near the airport and had to wait for about an hour. We then had to wait another hour to join up with those coming by boat to the island, as we were separated into different tours. On the way back, we were dropped off at that empty airport about two and a half hours early, leaving us with nothing to do. The content of the tour itself wasn't bad, but there were just too many long waits, which was exhausting. Previously, I went on a day trip to the Big Island, and that was definitely much prettier... It seems that a day trip to Maui might not be as interesting.
For those who think Maui means nothing but hotels and beaches this tour evidences otherwise. An amazing tour to the top of Haleakela Volcano, the Iao Valley (beautiful canyons, rock formations and foliage), and time to see and shop in Lahaina.
This is a chance to see some of the real Hawaii in Maui!
Beautiful! This tour was so much fun and our guide Kaui (spelling?) was a riot and very informative. If we ever get a chance to come back we'll definately do this tour again!
I participated previously.
In contrast to Oahu's image of blue, Kauai has an image of red. When I was considering a day trip, I was torn between Maui and the Big Island, but I decided to go with Kauai, a place that not many Japanese people visit.
In a word, it's nature! It feels like the island has remained untouched by development. I participated with my family, and it seems my daughter loved the fern cave while my husband preferred the canyon. This island offers various spirits that touch different people in different ways.
First I have to say you MUST ask for JUAN as your guide. He is a native of Kauai. He is not only EXTREMELY knowlegeable of the Island, Juan has a great sense of humor, full of great stories retold to him by his grandfather, native histories, is a wealth of information. The Canyon is fasinating to see, as well as the Water Falls that we stopped along the way to witness. Juan told us local folk lore regarding the Sleeping Giant; Sprouting Horn.
Juan is WORTH THE TRIP in himself!
Aloha

The trip is fun as you get to see the only live volcano on earth..when we visited, we could see the fumes coming out of 2 volcanoes, but couldnot make near the second one because of excess smoke..the black sand beach is also fun and unique.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Though the day started out a bit rainy (we did get an awesome rainbow) it cleared up quickly so by the time we were hiking the lava tube the weather was very pleasant. Viewing the volcano plume while having lunch at the Volcano House was awesome! Did enjoy the side trips to the orchid store and the Macadamia Nut factory, but the highlight was of couse hiking the lava beds and getting close enough to the water to see that tremendous grey and white plume where the lava meets the sea. Our driver was very knowledgable and did enjoy the information he provided us. Am tired but happy and would defnitely do this again. Mahalo!
Note: this is a long day adventure and requires moderate/difficult walking atop the Lava Rocks and paths so be well rested and hydrated for this Adventure. I was amazed and chilled by coming so close to the lava flows and the crater with live lava and steam rising from it..it looks so close you could touch it. This is a great adventure that anyone into the miracle of this great planets processes would love. I still get chills and the big Island is beautiful.
It was a long day, but one that I will not soon forget! From the moment we were picked up, till we were dropped back off, the staff was excellent. They were fountains of information and made the tour that much better.
Once we arrived into Hilo, I was thrilled to be able to see the crater and recent lava flows. It is amazing that this island is still growing and too see where new land is being created was quite the experience. Also being able to have lunch at the Volcano House was a wonderful touch and I am glad that we were able to have lunch in such a unique environment (and it was really yummy too)!
There was so much to see even once we were done with at the National Volcano Park, and the waterfalls were quite breathtaking. Must thank our river for the stop at the macadamia nut factory, since the ice-cream just hit the spot!
Thank you all for everything!!!!
This is a very long day, so be sure to get a good night's sleep the night before! We started off the morning with a 4:30 am pickup at our Oahu hotel and were driven to the airport. The driver was on time but the flight out to the Big Island on Island Air was not until after 6:30am, so we did have a but of a wait. The flight out was good, with one stop in Maui to pick up more people.
Once in Hilo, we were placed in a comfortable, air conditioned mini coach that could hold approximately 24 people. Our driver, Steve, was wonderful. He was friendly and constantly speaking to us with a wealth of information.
We are a family of five that went on this tour. I would not recommend this tour for really young children, as this is a long day and there is about a 1 mile hike on uneven hardened lava, but our youngest child is 9 and she did great. Our family enjoyed this tour very much and thought that this tour was a great value. We would definitely do it again.
This was a really great trip. Everything was just about as advertised. It was awesome to see the waterfall at Rainbow Falls and to see an active volcano, craters, walk on a lava field, see plumes of smoke from an active volcano. The only downer of the trip is when we got to the airport to return to Oahu, our flight was delayed 1.5 hours. Of course, the tour company can't be responsible for this. The airline (Island Air) did put us on another flight (Hawaiian Airlines) which was also delayed. So we got back to Oahu over two hours later than expected. We left our hotel at 4:30am and didn't get back until 10pm. A very long day so be well rested, especially for the 1 mile (total round trip) hike over the lava field but it was well worth it and I'm glad we did it.
An amazing trip. Once in a lifetime chance to visit an active volcano and walk on solidified lava. Fantastic experience.
I took this took by myself, and I had such a GREAT time. Saw so much lava everywhere, and our guide the driver was very informative. I would recommend to go with some friends or with family, it is just an awesome experience to share with them. It was a great experience, and I will definitely go again, but with some friends or family members.
The trip was ineteresting, but we were a little dissapointed as we didnt get to see the proposed itinerary (due to to much VOG in the air). Our driver Steve was very knowledgable and liked the sound of his own voice.
The nature trip is very enjoyable and educational. You get to see stuff that you would not see on the average. It is trip worth taking. However, I did not like the long wait at the airport in the morning and the evening. By the end of the day you are exhuasted. So, you should sleep well night before to enjoy the trip. It is trip that one should take once in their lifetime.
I forget the name of our guide, but she shared a lot of interesting konwledge about the volcano. I really enjoyed the trip, and would do it again. I recommend this tour package to everyone, you will learn a lot and enjoy yourself at the same time.
This was my first trip to the island of Kauai, and I must say I fell in love with the island. The people are much more relaxed than Honolulu, and the sceneries were just beautiful. Waimea Canyon was definitely the highlight of this trip, and I'm glad that I was able to see the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". The breathtaking view of the art of the mother nature is worth every penny. The Wailua River Cruise was very nice, and the Smith family did such a wonderful job entertaining us on the boat and at the Fern Grotto. We thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality. This is definitely recommended if you are only staying on O'ahu, and want to see Kauai for a day.
Tour begins VERY early, 4:30am. That's NOT a problem, but we didn't take off until well after 7:30. Wasted time. Arriving in Maui, we had to wait another 45 min. for the next flight to arrive to join our group. By this time we had wasted several hours. The staff really did everything they could and were very nice, but I never like my time being of no value.
Our guide, Judy, was very nice, entertaining, & very knowledgeable. They do need to provide her with a hands-free microphone. I didn't care for her driving up & down the crater with one hand. The mini-bus was clean & comforatable, but noisy. The windows rattled really bad.
The first stop was boring and basically a shabby little road-side stand for us to buy over-priced snacks & stuff. They must get a kick-back for stopping there. More wasted time.
Haleakala was amazing. I loved Judy's insight & knowledge of all kinds of trivia. It is FREEZING up there. Bring a jacket or you will not want to get out of the mini-bus. The
We had the best time of our lives! The only trouble we had was the airport. The company didn't issue some tickets and so at the ticket counter it took about 35 mins for us to get boarding passes.I would have thought maybe it was an oversight but it happened to all of the people in our tour group. It was also a little unnerving not to have some one from the tour company waiting for us at the Hilo airport, but all turned out well.I would recommend the trip to anyone. Our tour guide i believe was Harry...He should get a raise!!! He is very good and never found him to be boring! We tipped him graciously for his awesome day!!!!! I would like to have had maybe some later trip because it was hot for the children and i would like to have seen the hot lava but i could always come back for another trip...lol.So all in all it was a beautiful day and i would do it all over again!!!!
Be prepared for a FULL day! I was very satisfied with the hotel pickup/drop-off and air travel. Everything went according to the advertisement. Our tour guide ("Harry") on the Big Island was VERY good ... entertaining, knowledgeable, keeping us on-time, even beating the crowd from the other tour buses to the lunch line (buffet was over-priced at $17 each). The National Park Service had the road closed to the lava activity due to the recent earthquakes (tremors). But the black sand beach, crater visitors center and museum, lava tube, orchid nursery, and macadamia nut factory were well worth the visit. Don't know if I would go again, but you should include this activity at least one time!
even though we were not able to see the active lava flows, the tour to the volcano park was the highlight of my trip. the crater and the surrounding area is so amazing and our guide was a total blast! he provided excellent customer service and had a lot of knowledge about the volcanos and hawaii.
Absolutely incredible with a well paced activity schedule!!
Great! I just missed the liquid lava...
Fantastic tour with a great tour guide.
Only one problem.
We were told that we had to check in at 5:30 AM
at the Honolulu Airport.
We got there at that time and there was no one at their
counter.
The flight does not leave until 7:20 AM
so it was ridiculous to be told this.
Be advised and let your people know
because all you will do is sit and wait...and wait...and wait.
My daughter was amazed by the lava flows over the road. It also put her class work into perspective. The lava tube was very different and interesting. Ending with Macadamia Nut Ice Cream was perfect before the hop back to O'ahu!
This trip was absolutely the highlight of our stay in Hawaii. It was the most amazing experience to walk on the crater floor of an active volcano and take a wander on a lava field. I would thoroughly recommend this tour to anyone with any interest in volcanoes or anyone just looking for a fabulous way to spend a day. Our tour guide was an absolute fountain of knowledge, you could tell he had a deep interest in the subjects he talked about and in the Big Island.
Wish we had more time to see actual lava, not just lava fields. One hour is not enough time to hike to the flows and back. Other than that, however -- great time!!! LOVED Cousin Aaron!! :-)
