Hawaii
Floating in the night sea for 45 minutes while being tossed by the waves, even while holding onto something, takes quite a bit of stamina. I wondered if I really needed to wear a life jacket. The day we went, the waves might have been a bit rough.
I took motion sickness medication, but the waves were so rough that I got seasick and returned to the boat a little earlier than others. At the very least, it's a good idea to remember some English like "I wanna go back to the boat. I'm tired." The staff will help you when returning, but for the few meters until you grab the rope, you'll have to swim on your own in open water, which could be tough if you're not a strong swimmer... I think it's better to return with a bit of energy left. It was a more demanding activity than I expected.
The manta rays came quite close, which was great. Since seaweed and debris can get tangled in your hair while floating, wearing a swim cap helps prevent that and also makes the mask straps more comfortable. The English explanations weren't difficult, so you'll be fine.
I wanna go back to the boat. I'm tired."
Cruising while being blown by the sea breeze was very pleasant. The view of Hawaii Island from the ocean was also wonderful. Along the way, a pod of about five or six dolphins came close and swam right by us, which was a bit moving. The snorkeling was beautiful with its blue waters, but it was a bit disappointing that there weren't many fish. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the cruising was, and I felt glad to have participated.
I had some anxiety about the announcements being in English only, but on that day, there happened to be a Japanese group with us, and the guide translated for us, so there were no problems at all.
Kealakekua Bay was amazing. The sea was so beautiful that my 7-year-old and 4-year-old said it was the most fun they’ve ever had. Even my husband, who isn’t very comfortable in the water, really enjoyed it. The slide was quite high and not suitable for small children, but my older child took on the challenge. I tried it too, but... young guys were sliding down like crazy.
The hamburgers for lunch were delicious, and the boat didn’t rock too much, which was great. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see any dolphins, but we will definitely go again next time. I highly recommend it.
I saw a manta ray for the first time in Hawaii. I heard that the chances of seeing one are close to 100%. Since I had my child with me, I was relieved that we were able to see it. However, the briefing on the boat before diving was quite long, and my wife and child started to feel sick, so I think the briefing should be shorter. That said, I was surprised at how close it came, almost touching my legs. I think seeing a manta ray is worth it, but maybe just once?
This was a very unique experience for us. We felt in very good hands with our guides, considering we were in the open Ocean! Everyone was very friendly, and were quick to point out a pod of dolphins and their new baby! Totally awesome!
We participated with our children who are in the second and third grades. Although we couldn't communicate in Japanese, we managed just fine. Thanks to taking motion sickness medication before boarding, we didn't get seasick and arrived at the snorkeling spot. When they asked for our fin sizes, it was hard to communicate in centimeters, so I recommend checking the sizes in inches beforehand. They also provided floaties and other floating devices. The cheeseburger for lunch was delicious.
On the way back, we were accompanied by a lot of dolphins, and they were even right under the boat, which really impressed the kids. As parents, we felt like kids again and enjoyed jumping into the sea from the boat's slide, taking our time to relax.
We were quite tired, so we ended up taking a nap at the hotel in the afternoon. I think it's better not to schedule anything after that.
I participated in early August, and on that day, I saw three manta rays up close, almost as if they were going to bump into us. Due to the sunset, we gathered at the office in the shopping center at 6:30 PM and set sail at 7 PM. After checking in at the office in the shopping center and renting wetsuits, we moved to the boat ramp at Keauhou Bay individually. The water was quite cold, but the beautiful and powerful swimming of the manta rays made it worth it. It was a good decision to stay at the Sheraton within walking distance since we disbanded while still wet. We were the only Japanese participants.
On July 23, I participated with my two children. Since they are elementary school students, we were looking for a tour where Japanese was spoken, and we ended up here.
As everyone had said, Kevin and Noni were very kind and attentive, and they seemed very experienced in handling children. We enjoyed both kayaking and snorkeling.
Especially for snorkeling, it was the first time for my children to be in 6 to 7 meters deep water. At first, they looked very nervous, but within five minutes, they were floating on their own. I believe this was not only due to the clear sea, corals, and small fish, but also because of Kevin and Noni's excellent guidance.
Additionally, while regular beaches tend to have sand that stirs up and clouds the water, being near the lava coast meant there was none of that, and the visibility was great. Joining the tour was definitely the right choice.
When going as just a family, there can be various concerns, but with a tour, I felt reassured, so I would like to participate again.
Guides fun and helpful. Snoring was great...lots of colorful fish. Kayaking was tiring and tough for a beginner, but it was doable. Wear water shoes and a waterproof camera and cash for a tip.
A wonderful trip, beautiful snorkelling, well organized by helpful and friendly staff, including a great photographer. We had a great time and can recommend this trip without reservation.
I participated in a tour on July 24, 2011. My husband and I had done kayaking once during our honeymoon in Cairns, but it was the first time for our children. We had Kevin, who speaks fluent Japanese and has lived in Japan for 30 years, and Noni, teaching us one-on-one, so we had no worries at all! When I thought the kids might be a little hesitant, Kevin was considerate and took their hands to change the experience into snorkeling, which they enjoyed. I appreciate the thoughtful attention, possibly from his experience in Japan. During break time, there were plenty of snacks and pineapple juice, so we were all full! This tour is enjoyable for beginners, repeat visitors, families, and friends alike! Also, even if you're a beginner in English conversation, Kevin is there to help. Our family has become repeat participants in this tour and we want to join again.
As someone who has visited Hawaii 30 times, I highly recommend it! If you read this comment, please consider joining!

My friend and I participated in an underwater cave exploration plan. On that day, there were only four participants: the two of us and one couple. The instructors were Kevin and his wife (who is Japanese), and both were fluent in Japanese, so there were no language barriers at all. They provided us with very attentive support.
After we set off, we found ourselves surrounded by a completely empty, deep blue sea. It felt like we had the ocean all to ourselves. It was a truly wonderful experience.
However, be careful when jumping off the cliffs! We had a light-hearted attitude about wanting to jump, but... if you underestimate it, you might end up in pain. The view from up high was beautiful, but standing on the edge of the cliff, it was higher than I expected, and it took a bit of courage to jump... It was a serious jump, for sure (laughs). If you don't jump straight in, you might get hurt. I lost my balance and landed on my rear—ouch! It really hurt (tears). Only those who are confident should give it a try!
Overall, it was a lot of fun, so I highly recommend it! Next time, I think I’ll participate without jumping.
I chose this plan because I wanted to do both kayaking and snorkeling. It was a casual half-day course. Since it was my first time on the Big Island and I was moving around by rental car, I was a bit anxious about joining a tour without transportation included, but this was the only one with a Japanese-speaking guide.
Once we arrived at the meeting point without any issues, we received instructions on how to paddle a kayak and then headed out to sea. The guides were a couple, and both of them (the wife is Japanese) spoke fluent Japanese, so I felt completely at ease. I was satisfied that we could paddle for a long time. Although the snorkeling experience didn't have as many fish as I encountered in Palau, I was more than comforted by the personalities of the two guides, the color of the sea, and the surrounding scenery.
The kayaking was comfortable, and I was able to experience getting in and out of the kayak on the water for the first time. Since it was just the two of us participating this time (they usually accommodate small groups), it felt less like joining a tour and more like receiving warm hospitality from acquaintances, allowing us to have a very relaxing time. I highly recommend this tour!
The cave was a bit disappointing. It was so small that we only paddled in 3 feet and turned around.
We actually snorkeled in a bay with cliffs. You were able to climb up and jump off a 30 foot cliff.
They had great snacks up on the cliff: fresh pinapple, cookies, chocolate, cheese and drinks.
The staff was very laid back. We had 3 tour guides for our trip that seemed to not stress about anything. We had one couple in our group that paddled away from the main group and the staff didn't seem concerned about it.
The kayak/snorkeling adventure was a lot of fun. I was prepared to kayak, but it was still a LOT of work. In total, you end up kayaking for close to two hours. Then we snorkeled for close to an hour or more. Would NOT recommend if you cannot kayak for that long or if you have small kids that cannot help paddle. Just be prepared.
The guides were nice and kept pace in the front with the leaders and in the rear with the slowest of the group. No one was left behind, which was nice. However, at the front of the group, we did do a lot of waiting for others. We went to a few sea caves and then went to a spot to snorkel and have snacks. The snacks were nice, the fresh pineapple was the best by far!
I did not find anything unique about this tour though. I felt like the tour guides have given the same "WOW you guys seem adventerous, should we take them here....or not?" talk a thousand times. Was kind of corny. But the activity was exactly as described and both my husband and I
I had a very enjoyable time.
They also speak Japanese (one of the two staff members is Japanese, and the other is fluent in Japanese), and the staff's service was excellent.
If you're going to do sea kayaking in Hawaii, I highly recommend it.
It was truly amazing. The instructors were both Japanese and American, and they taught us kindly with great Japanese skills. It was my first time kayaking, and we paddled for a long time towards a cave. Entering the Dragon Cave felt like being inside a dragon's throat, with water gushing out from deep inside, which was really interesting. It was thrilling and absolutely fantastic.
After getting hyped up and anchoring the kayak, we went snorkeling next. There were so many fish, including some I had never seen before. Occasionally, there are also dolphins and mantas. I was moved by the beautiful sea in such a healing situation. I definitely want to recommend this to anyone looking to create great memories through activities. It's an experience you'll want to have again for sure!
Most times you see trips with pictures it is the best of the best and you do not always see what they show on the website....in this case it is EXACTLY what you will see. FANTASTIC snorkeling and a wonderful time. I highly recommend this trip. Informative and very friendly crew. They will make sure you get good snorkeling!
This was the first time that my husband & me tried the snorkelling. The crew was awesome and helpful!!
I really got to see a manta ray!
Even with the lights, it was quite dark, and the photos turned out dark as well (laughs).
However, the sight of the manta ray swimming gracefully, turning its body, was clearly visible against the darkness because of its white color.
Even in Hawaii, the ocean at night is cold.
I went during Golden Week, and I think it's better to rent a wetsuit. I thought there might be an extra charge, but it was included in the price. At the reception, they will instruct you to borrow one from the next room if you need it, so I recommend stopping by.
The reception area inside the shopping center was a bit hard to find (it's a glass shop with just a counter).
I wasn't sure about the warm drinks and food. It might be better not to rely on them too much...
The kayaking trip was good despite the weather. The waves were a little rough and we actually tipped over. Our guide was awesome! He answered all our questions and he stopped to help other people in need. Since the weather didnt cooperate, we werent able to snorkle. They are very understandable and refunded some of our mpney. We highly recommend this to anyone!
It was ok. The only problem I had with it was that the with the snorkeling portion we went to a place where they said theres a lot of fish and there werent, not colorful or of much variety. It was fun to jump off a cliff and go swimming. It was only worth the money because they gave unlimited snacks so you kind of got your moneys worth.
This was BY FAR the best tour we took - even better than the helicopter tour of the volcano!
We enjoyed the smaller boat - only 12 people on our tour (from teens to seniors) plus Captain Steve and the Drew crew. Other boats seemed to have hundreds on board, although they may have had better facilities. Kayaks can damage the coral, and they aren't as mobile as the boat - no whale searching or cave exploring.
First, Hawaii Activities actually called us to check that we were going to be there on time and asked if we had any questions. Then, we checked in, signed waivers, and were assigned to our boat. It was all very organized and ran very smoothly.
Steve and Drew were very knowledgeable and patient with first timers. They served a wonderful snack (fresh pineapple and other fruits, chips, cookies, etc), and the snorkeling (two spots) was wonderful. They even had a book to help us identify what we had seen.
The icing on the cake was that two whales decided to grace us w
Our adventure on the seaquest was both unique and educational , not to mention awesome ! darren and joe were informative and profesional , fun was the order of the day and spectactular sights and sea life was seen . Whales with calfs breaching , dolphins , more fish than you can count ! thats just in the water . they told about the history and culture . educational facts about the marine life . I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS FOR ANYONE ! Its well worth the money for the experience !
sincerely
PETER SHARP
This was a great tour! We saw whales, dophins and plenty of beautiful tropical fish. The boat was comfortable and the staff did a great job. We even got to listen to the whales singing with an underwater microphone!
I participated in February. The snorkeling was a bit cold, and I think there were fewer fish than usual. It was great to see the whales.
The Fairwind crew is the best there is - I highly recommend them to any and all. We had so much fun with our Friday snorkel that we booked another on the following Tuesday. The food was outstanding and the instructions were great. The fish class was lots of fun. Case is a great guy and an excellent speaker to people of all ages. We were only on the Big Island for a week and the Fairwind snorkels were the best memories.......
My family and I totally agree that this was the best tour that we did while we were in Hawaii. A friend of mine had told me about the rays on the big island, but I totally didn't think that it was going to be that amazing. The crew members were really attentive and once we got into the water, it was like being in some alien planet with the rays around us and the plankton glowing under the lights. Doing this again if I ever get back to Hawaii!!!!
We signed up for a kayak tour in Japanese as a couple in our 50s. The owner and guide, Kevin, has a beautiful Japanese wife. Kevin used to be an English teacher in Japan, so he speaks Japanese well. His wife is said to be a former student of his.
Even if it's your first time kayaking, you'll be fine. You'll receive kind and thorough instruction, and then the two of them will guide you out to sea. With a stable sit-on-top kayak, there's no worry about capsizing, even for beginners. We could see whales spouting and raising their tails in the distance, and we also spotted sea turtles. There's a point where manta rays can appear, so it seems you might see them as well. We were told that if a large black shadow passes by, it's a manta ray, but we didn't see any that day.
The snorkeling revealed the beauty of the sea... Instead of going out on a big boat to see whales and dolphins, let's leisurely meet whales and sea turtles in a stable kayak. If you get better at paddling, they will guide you to even more amazing spots, so I think it's a good idea to sign up for two days.
Please experience the great nature that you can't enjoy on Oahu. It takes about 15 minutes and costs $20 by taxi from our hotel in Kona to the clubhouse.
Excellent tour. Breakfast enroute to the bay, 2 hours of snorkelling in beautifully clear water, high diving, waterslides and BBQ lunch at the swim site, all accompanied with a great crew. Doesn't get much better!
