My 7-year-old daughter, my nephew, and my grandfather all participated. Since my daughter had ridden horses once in Hokkaido, she had some understanding of the process, but everyone was very satisfied as they were able to ride more than they expected. Unlike in Japan, where the instructor walks alongside holding the reins, here the instructor was also on horseback. At first, my daughter had some tears because she couldn't lift the horse's head well, but after a while, she seemed to be doing well.
The explanations were, of course, in English, so it seemed quite confusing for them. However, we had trouble finding the meeting point. We intended to arrive 30 minutes early, but we got lost and arrived right at the starting time, which caused inconvenience to those who had arrived earlier. It would be helpful to have more detailed information about the meeting point.
The weather was quite rainy, to the point where we thought it might be canceled, but the event went ahead. It stopped raining by the end, but I wished I had reminded everyone to bring raincoats based on the weather.
I participated in a different tour with my baby and mother, but the timing of the horseback riding experience worked out well, and I was able to pick them up properly.
My daughter said she wants to participate in horseback riding again and try running next time.

This was my second time riding in Waipi'o. This time, I tried going into the valley, and it was fun to go right into the river. Last time, it was a private tour with just the guide, my husband, and me, and the guide spoke slowly in both English and Japanese, so I understood well. This time, there were about ten people, and only one group of Japanese (two people), so I couldn't catch everything, but it was still enjoyable. The scenery was more impressive on the mountain climbing tour I took in 2014. However, this experience allows you to ride a horse casually, not worrying about getting wet, and going deep into the water, which is something you wouldn't imagine in Japan, all at a reasonable price. I highly recommend it.

Even if you're not good at English, there's no need to feel anxious about horseback riding.
During the horseback riding course, we couldn't see the ocean, but Waipi'o Valley is a scenic spot with ocean views, so it was great to enjoy it on the way back.
We left Keauhou at 7:00 and arrived at 8:30.
There is only a simple Western-style toilet available.
If you go about 1 km towards the Waipi'o Tour Center, there is a drive-in, so it might be better to use that.

This experience is certainly off the beaten pack and is an amazing way to explore the nearly inaccessible Waipio Valley.
We met at the meeting point and we were driven down into the valley down one of the gnarliest roads I've ever been on in a 4x4 to the stables.
We were introduced to our horses and led on a serene trek through the valley. We went through rivers and around small holdings that are dotted around the valley. We marvelled, from a distance, at incredible waterfalls as we trekked through paths with fields on one side and jungle on the other. It was awesome.
Our guide was great and it's something we'll both always remember. We're not riders but we're extremely well looked after.

The meeting point and ending point are local, and since the guide speaks only English, it's necessary to have a rental car and understand some English. They teach you how to ride the horse slowly and clearly, so as long as you can catch everyday conversation, you should be fine.
The guides for this trip were two local women. Besides the two of us, the party included a couple and their family from the mainland, making a total of nine people, creating a friendly atmosphere.
Along the way, they taught us about various wild fruits (such as mangoes, papayas, noni, avocados, bananas, etc.), we encountered wild horses, and we visited a waterfall that can only be seen by going down into the canyon, making it a satisfying tour.
There was also a tour that went down to the canyon by car, but I recommend horseback riding as it allows you to go deeper by crossing the river and navigating through narrow paths!
This time, I chose this option because I wanted to stroll around the nearby towns of Honokaa and Waimea before and after the tour, but if you simply want to enjoy horseback riding in the canyon, I think it's better to choose a tour with a Japanese guide and transportation included.

We participated with two adults and two children for our first horseback riding experience. We took a four-wheel drive microbus down to the bottom of Waipi'o Valley from the meeting point. The guide provided explanations in English, but it's okay if you can't catch everything. The stunning views of the valley and the movement of the vehicle going down the steep slope felt like a little attraction, which was enjoyable. Upon arrival, the guide explained how to ride the horses in English and some broken Japanese. Although I felt a bit anxious, I could understand somewhat through gestures, and the horses were well-trained, so we could ride without any issues. After that, we rode in a line through the valley, passing taro fields and waterfalls. As we got more comfortable, it felt like we were able to control the horses ourselves, making it a very enjoyable experience. While it might be a bit lacking for experienced riders, our family, who are all beginners, was completely satisfied with the experience.
Additional notes:
- We drove from Kailua-Kona by rental car, which took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The local office is also in a somewhat difficult-to-find location, so I recommend allowing extra time for travel.
- If you bring a camera, the guide can take photos for you along the way.
- The guide will say "right, left, pull, kick" in Japanese when necessary, so it's fine even for children who don't understand English. (According to them)

This was truly a magical day in Hawaii. Waipio Valley is one of those places best seen through the eyes of someone local. This is not merely a tour, but more of an invitation to visit the valley as a guest and get the grand tour from people who truly love it and want you to as well. The horses are happy, healthy, well cared for individuals with personalities and this trail ride is not the dull, narrated nose to tail variety often found in tourist areas. You won't have a "canned" speech and your horses won't be falling asleep from having done a monotonous walk they have done a million times with no hope of change. We left feeling like we really learned a lot from our hosts, who live in the valley, love and know it well, while having seen some of the most spectacular scenery on the island. The snapshot of the view from the lookout point is certainly gorgeous, but go the extra mile and take a ride into the valley to see the taro, the waterfalls, the wild horses, the freshwater streams and amazing landscape. You won't be disappointed!

During my trip between Oahu and the Big Island, I was torn between horseback riding at Kualoa Ranch or Waipi'o Valley, but to cut to the chase, I made the right choice by going horseback riding here.
The first half of the experience, taking a 4WD bus down to the valley where the horses are, was incredibly enjoyable. Although I'm not great at English, the instructors seemed accustomed to Japanese speakers and taught us how to ride in a way that was easy to understand, even without grasping the language.
The horseback riding course allowed us to fully enjoy the magnificent nature unique to the Big Island. We crossed streams multiple times, and it was adorable to see the horse I was riding stop to drink water or nibble on grass along the way. If you pull on the reins, the horse will start walking, and I felt safe riding a well-trained horse. At the scenic spots, the staff kindly took photos of us while we were on horseback.

You simply proceed slowly in a line through the valley, so you can participate with peace of mind. If possible, I recommend the morning tour as it allows for more time.
Wild Mustangs come close to the herd along the way. It's interesting to see how horses have their likes and dislikes. I believe first-timers will have a very satisfying experience.
While Waipi'o Valley can be viewed from above, you can get a better sense of it by going down. Recently, Japanese documents have also been prepared, so even though the guide doesn't understand Japanese, it’s not a particular problem.

A tall woman came to pick me up at the meeting point as the guide, and after checking in, we headed to the stables in a large vehicle with a 4x4 and horses painted on it. However, she told me that she didn't understand Japanese. I felt uneasy but she reassured me that she could say "danger!" so I should listen carefully. The horseback riding instructions were given in English and gestures, and there were Japanese warning signs and simple explanations posted. Even if you don't understand English, the horses are well-trained, so it's manageable, but if you want to understand the guide's explanations along the way, I think an intermediate level of English is necessary. The horses lined up on their own and walked easily, and the reins only required simple movements. We progressed through the river, crossed it, and even strayed off the path to eat grass, but the smart horses quickly returned to the line. We were able to slowly enjoy the taro fields and waterfalls at the bottom of the valley, and the hour and a half passed in no time. If it's a morning tour, you can head out in the afternoon, which is enjoyable. We were blessed with good weather, and I'm glad I participated. I didn't have time to take photos, but the guide took some for us along the way. I would love to participate again!
