Pickup at the parking lot behind IGM.
The tour was conducted with just seven Japanese participants. We then met up with a couple at the Onizuka Center. The lively conversation led by Stephan, who grew up at Yokota Air Base in Japan and is known as "Suu-san," included fun chats, preparations for the tour, and important points to note, and before we knew it, we arrived at Onizuka S. We took a break to acclimatize to the altitude. Although the weather forecast looked questionable, we were hopeful since it was reported that the sunset at the summit of Mauna Kea was visible yesterday despite the clouds.
As sunset approached, the weather turned ominous, and we waited in the car, but a snowstorm hit, leading to a recommendation from the ranger to descend. Along the way, we saw several broken-down vehicles, but with Stephan's never-give-up spirit (laughs), we stopped at a stargazing point to wait for a break in the clouds.
We observed Saturn and M87 through a telephoto lens, and with a DSLR, we captured images of Orion while enjoying sandwiches and cocoa.
We took photos of couples in the dark, and there was so much to enjoy. We headed back, hoping to see the sunset next time.
I felt lucky to enjoy the tour without language barriers since it was exclusively for Japanese participants.

IGMの裏手駐車場にてピックアップ。
日本人のみの7人で催行。さらにオニヅカセンターでカップル2人と合流。スーさんこと日本の横田基地育ちのステファンの軽快な日本語によるたのしいおしゃべり、ツアーに向けての心構え、注意点なども含めてのトークでオニヅカSまではアッという間に到着。高度順応も兼ねての休憩。天気予報は怪しかったが山頂に雲がかかっていた昨日もマウナケア山頂でのサンセットは見られたということで、期待して山頂へと向かう。
日没が近づくにつれ、雲行きが怪しくなり車内で待機したものの吹雪となり、レンジャーによる下山勧告。途中、何台かの故障車を観ながら移動、ステファンのネバギブ精神(笑）で途中の星空観測ポイントで晴れ間を待つ。
晴れ間からの土星、M87を望遠レンズで、オリオン座など目視、一眼レフでの撮影をしながらのサンドイッチとココアでの食事。
暗闇の中のカップルの撮影、、、いろいろ盛りだくさんあって、とてもたのしめました。今度は是非、夕日を見られたらと思いつつ帰路につきました。
日本人のみの催行で言葉に気兼ねなく楽しめてラッキーでした。
サンライズはクリア済なので次回はサンセットをコンプリートしたいです。

I knew that the tour date was not suitable for stargazing due to the seasonal factors and being a few days after the full moon, but I had made my decision to participate after the travel date was set, so I was prepared for that. On the day of the tour, our guide was Stefan, who grew up in Japan, and he provided a fun experience. According to the guide, the moon's influence was not a problem since it was already a few days past the full moon and the moon would rise after the tour ended, but he was concerned about the clouds. I wished for no clouds in the sky, but unfortunately, my worries came true. However, there was just enough of a gap to see the sunset.

I understood that due to the timing, it was more likely that we wouldn't see the stars, but I was really looking forward to it, so it was truly disappointing.

For cold weather preparation, I wore: on top, a tank top + short-sleeve Heattech + a slightly thicker long-sleeve T-shirt + a light down jacket + a scarf around my neck; on the bottom, Heattech leggings + warm windproof pants with a boa lining (I also wore a long skirt that I had on from the start). I put on the warm clothing I brought with me at the Onizuka Visitor Center. It was a windless day at the summit, but it was still cold, and I borrowed a jacket from the guide. The jacket I borrowed was really warm and a great help. I also appreciated the warm cocoa service. My friend brought a hot pack, which was helpful too. I wished I had brought gloves. I recommend bringing gloves that allow you to touch your phone screen (like those without fingertips).

However, the restroom situation was a bit challenging. The guide advised us to use the facilities at the Onizuka Visitor Center, saying there were portable toilets at the summit, but they weren't clean. I made sure to go before the tour, but I tend to need the restroom frequently, and the cold made it worse. I was also told to drink water frequently to avoid altitude sickness, so I couldn't avoid hydration. I remember there were about four portable toilets at the summit, but when I peeked in because I couldn't hold it anymore, they were too dirty to use. So, the off-road return trip was really tough (laughs). This seemed to be a common occurrence, as the guide mentioned on the way back that it was hard to hold it on the off-road path. By the way, the restrooms at the Onizuka Visitor Center are flush toilets, so you can use them with peace of mind. 寒さ対策としては、上：タンクトップ＋半袖ヒートテック＋少々厚手の長Tシャツ＋ライトダウンジャケット＋ストールを首に巻く、下：ヒートテックのレギンス＋暖かいボア裏地付きの風を通さないタイプのズボン（最初からはいていた長いスカートもそのまま着ていました）で挑みました。オニヅカ・ビジターセンターで手荷物で持ってきた防寒着を着込みました。山頂でも風が全くない日でしたが、さすがに山頂は寒く、ガイドさんにジャケットをお借りしました。お借りしたジャケットが本当に暖かく、助かりました。温かいココアのサービスも嬉しかったです。友達が持ってきてくれたホッカイロも助かりました。手袋を持っていけばよかったなぁと思いました。携帯の画面が触れるような（指先がないタイプとか）手袋があったら持って行くことをお勧めします

ただ、トイレ事情がちょっと大変でした。ガイドさんからは、オニヅカビジターセンターで行っておいてくださいね、山頂にも簡易トイレがあるけど綺麗じゃないので。と案内があったので、ちゃんと行っておいたのですが、元々トイレに行く頻度が多い私も、寒いのせいで更にトイレが近くなります。そして、高山病にならないように、お水をちびちび頻繁に飲むようにと言われていたので、水分を取らないということもできませんでした。山頂の簡易トイレは４つほどあったように記憶していますが、トイレが我慢できそうになくて、使ってみようかと覗いてみたところ、汚くてどうしても使えませんでした。だから帰りのオフロードが本当に辛かった（笑）それはお馴染みの出来事のようで、ガイドさんも帰り道、オフロードの道がトイレ我慢してると辛いよね〜って話してました。ちなみに、オニヅカビジターセンターのトイレは水洗なので安心して使えます。しかし他のツアー会社の参加者もいますし、全体に人数が多いのもあって、女性トイレは長い列ができていました。

綺麗な夕陽も星空も見れなかったことは大変残念でしたが、富士山より高いところまで行けたことは本当に貴重な体験でしたし、ガイドさんもベテランの方で安心できました。いつか、またこちらの会社のツアーに参加して、次こそは夕陽と星空を見たいと思います。

星空観測なんかは英語がそこそこできる方でも、日本語で説明してもらわないと理解できないくらいマニアックな説明をしてくれるので、日本語できるガイドで本当に良かったです。
防寒対策でいろいろと上着持って行きましたが、防寒着もしっかりしたものを貸してもらえるので、上下ヒートテックと長袖スウェットくらいあれば問題無かったです。
山頂はあまり空気の薄さも感じず、特に何の問題も無くツアーを終えられました。

It was much colder than I had imagined, and I really wondered if this was Hawaii. I brought my winter gear for climbing, and as I got closer to the summit, I kept putting on more layers, but at the top, it was below freezing. It was really cold. Still, I was moved to witness the beautiful, perfect sunset. Honestly, it was so cold that after the sunset, I wanted to go home (laughs). However, we then enjoyed stargazing. I was looking forward to the guide taking pictures with the stars, but even though they used a good camera, the photo quality was disappointing.

There were many other tour guests, so there were lights around, and with the strong wind, it was a challenging environment to properly capture the stars.

The BLT sandwich for the meal was really delicious, but I wished for a warm drink. (I was really envious of the other tour guests who were given warm drinks.) It was so cold that I caught a bit of a cold.

集合場所が「アイランドグルメマーケット」だったのですが近くに「アイランドグリル」という看板があってここかな？と勘違いしてしまいました。名前が似ていてややこしい…。集合時間に少し遅れてしまい本当に申し訳なかったですが電話連絡があり待っていてくれました。

想像していた何倍も寒くて本当にここはハワイなのかと思うぐらい寒かったです。登山用の防寒着を持参し、山頂に近づくにつれてどんどん着込んでいきましたが山頂は氷点下。本当に寒かった。それでも美しい完璧なサンセットを拝むことができて感動しました。
正直寒すぎてサンセット終わりでもう帰りたいとなりました(笑)　が、その後星空観測をして星空も満喫。ガイドさんが星空との写真を撮ってくれるということで期待していたけどいいカメラ使っているのに撮影レベルが低くて残念でした。
ツアー客が他にもたくさんいるので光などもあり、風邪も強くしっかり星空撮影しようと思ったら難しい環境でした。

食事のBLTサンドはすごく美味しかったけど、あたたかい飲み物が欲しかった。（他のツアーの人が温かい飲み物を支給されていて本当に羨ましかった）
寒すぎたため少し風邪を引きました。

I was surprised by the off-road conditions, but the tour guide and driver provided explanations in both English and Japanese, and before I knew it, we reached the summit (4200m) with its observation points. There were already many tourists there, but we were able to enjoy the sunset in a spacious area, and the guide took commemorative photos for us. ヒロ宿泊でしたので、申込時に、「オニヅカビジターセンター待ち合わせ」が可能かどうかの問い合わせからスタートしましたが、日本語のメールでの問い合わせにも親切にご対応いただき、無事に、申込完了。

当日も、待ち合わせ時間の2時間前には、センター（標高2800ｍ）にレンタカーで到着し、周辺の散策などで、高度順応。

センターからは、ツアーの車に乗り換えて、コナの各ホテルから来られた方々と同行。助手席という特等席に乗せていただき、山頂へ出発。
予想以上のオフロードに驚きながらも、ツアーガイド 兼 ドライバーの方が運転しながら英語と日本語で説明をしただき、あっという間に展望台群のある山頂(4200m)に。
既に、多くの観光客がいましたが、広いスペースでサンセットを楽しむことができ、ガイドの方が記念の写真も撮っていただきました。
残雪と強風で体感気温は「-５度」くらいでしたが、持参していたダウンや手袋で何とか凌げました。

サンセット後は、3600mの駐車場まで下りてからの星空観測。
暗くなるに従い、刻々と観える星の数が倍増していき、感動の連続。
ここでも、日本語で星座などの詳しい説明をしていただき、あっという間の時間でした。

さらに、山頂と星空観測で撮っていただいた写真をその場で、LINEで共有していただき、思い出深い写真になりました。

是非、富士山より500ｍも高いところを体験でき、サンセットと星空観測の２つの感動を得られるツアーをお勧めいたします！

The sea of clouds was also visible, making for the perfect situation. The scenery was even more breathtaking than the photos in the brochure. As it got darker, stars began to appear one by one, and their numbers quickly increased, transforming the scene into a completely different world from before sunset. The summit was colder than I expected, and I wore a down jacket suitable for winter, but it was still chilly. I recommend being well-prepared for the cold. The air pressure was low, and the air was thin, so I think those with respiratory issues or who are not in good health should reconsider participating. I truly felt the thinness of the air.

After sunset, I did some stargazing a little below the summit. The sky was filled with stars, creating a wonderful celestial show. I learned how to identify constellations and participated in observations with a telescope. It was moving to see the rings of Saturn through the telescope.

　山頂には各国の天文台が並んでいて、宇宙に一歩近づいた感じでした。日の入りまで少し時間があり、山頂からの壮大な景色を堪能しました。スケジュール調整をして参加した価値が充分にありました。しばらくすると、日没の壮大なショーが始まり、山頂近くの地面や空の色が徐々に変わり、映画のワンシーンを観ている状態で、感動的でした。雲海も見えて最高のシチュエーションでした。景色はパンフレットの写真以上で、圧巻でした。暗くなると星がポツポツ見え出して、その数があっと言う間に増えて、日没前とは全くの別世界になりました。山頂は思っていたよりも寒く、真冬の格好でダウンジャケットも着ましたがそれでも寒かったです。寒さ対策は十分にしておくことをおすすめします。気圧も低く、空気も薄いので呼吸器系統の弱い人や体調が万全でない人の参加は見合わせた方がいいと思います。空気の薄さを実感しました。
　日没後に山頂から少し下った場所で星空観察をしました。満天の星で素晴らしい天体ショーでした。星座の見方を教えてもらい、望遠鏡での観察にも参加しました。その中で土星の輪が見えたのは感動的でした。
　午後早めの時間帯からの少し長丁場でしたが、参加する価値は十分にあると思います。感動をありがとうございました。

I was a bit worried about going to an elevation higher than Mount Fuji without any prior experience in mountain climbing, but thanks to the wonderful support of our articulate guide, we were able to reach the summit safely. We drove almost all the way to the top and enjoyed the sunset. The stargazing afterward was easy to understand, and having hot cocoa under the starry sky was the best.

This was on my bucket list. My guide was very informative. He took pictures, individual and group pictures of us during sunset and during the stargazing event. Be prepared to bounce around on the dirt road to the summit. Totally enjoyed the hot cocoa and BLT sandwich that was provided.

I searched for a tour to experience the great nature of the Big Island for the first time and participated in the Mauna Kea Summit Sunset and Stargazing Tour. At first, I didn't have high expectations for climbing the mountain to see the sunset and the stars. I also read reviews mentioning that the explanations were only in English, making it difficult for those without strong English skills to understand. Additionally, although I don't have high blood pressure, I was concerned about climbing over 4,000 meters at the age of 67.

In conclusion, it was an amazing experience. While I did feel a bit breathless at the summit, it wasn't an issue if I walked slowly. The detailed explanations of the summit's viewpoint, the breathtaking sunset as it gradually darkened, and even I, with barely passing vision for my driver's license renewal, could see the Milky Way with the naked eye. The detailed explanations of the constellations were also impressive. I hadn't seen the Milky Way in about 50 years, and it was truly moving.

This experience was made even more special thanks to the attentive service from the staff at Masashi Nature. Our guide was a Japanese person named SHOYO. His extensive knowledge, excellent explanations, and thoughtful attention created a very comfortable environment.

There were about 12 people on the tour, and my wife and I were the only Japanese participants. The explanations on the bus were in English, but they were not difficult to understand. Additionally, when we got off the bus, they provided a summary of the key points in Japanese. Outside the bus, the explanations were given in a mix of English and Japanese, making them very clear and detailed.

The photos of the sunset and the one with my wife under the Milky Way are wonderful treasures of memories. If I plan another tour in Hawaii, I will choose a Masashi Nature tour where I won't struggle with the language.

次回、ハワイでツアーを計画するのであれば、日本語に苦労しないマサシネイチャーのツアーを選択すると思います。

At first, I was worried about the weather because the mountain in front was hidden by clouds, but Mauna Kea was clear above the clouds, and it was a beautiful day! I enjoyed the best sunset and a lovely starry sky!

Our guide was an American named Tat, who occasionally spoke Japanese. It seemed he was working with another guide from the same tour company, who was also American but spoke Japanese fluently.

They prepared two telescopes for us, allowing us to observe Jupiter and Saturn. Then, they took a picture of the Milky Way and shared the photos with us via AirDrop. It was a wonderful experience with a great team!

Our tour guide, Stephan, was very friendly and, despite being a tall foreigner, he grew up in Japan and speaks fluent Japanese. He was very kind, took many photos for us, and even sent us some amazing starry sky pictures he had taken in the past via AirDrop. The vegetarian sandwich was also very delicious, and the cocoa he made for us at the summit was incredibly tasty and warming. Thank you for a wonderful experience and memories.

During our previous visit to the Big Island, my son was too young to join the Mauna Kea summit tour. Now that he is an adult, his dream came true, and we participated together with my husband. Although it was cold at the summit, they lent us down jackets, so it was no problem. With no wind and being the second day after the new moon, both the sunset and the starry sky were magnificent.
