It's like a jungle! What an amazing first impression. You can slowly enjoy the magnificent nature of Waipi'o while being gently rocked on a horse. It was my first time horseback riding, but the horse was smart and guided me on its own, so I felt safe. It was truly a unique place on the Big Island of Hawaii. My 9-year-old daughter is learning horseback riding, and we wanted to let her experience it in nature, so our family of four participated.

On the day of the event, we drove there with a rental car and were able to find the meeting point easily using Google Maps. After signing a liability waiver and a short bathroom break, we set off.

We went down to the valley in a large 4WD vehicle, which was really thrilling and fun! There was a Japanese guide from another tour with us, and it was great to hear the explanations together. The guide talked about the plants around us, but since there were about ten of us in a line, there were times when it was hard to hear the guide's voice. A friendly dog that was close to the horses also joined us, which was very cute.

The ladies at the small souvenir shop at the meeting point were very nice, and we chatted with them a bit. We rode for about an hour and a half, which made our backsides sore, but we also experienced some rain, walked through a river, and it was quite challenging to control the horses as they kept eating grass.

At one point, I got too close to the horse in front of me, and my horse almost bolted, which was a bit scary. If you're worried, it might be a good idea to get travel insurance, as horses are living creatures and anything can happen.

Overall, I think it was a very valuable experience. You can't see that kind of nature in Japan. The children made wonderful memories.

集合場所にある小さいお土産屋さんのおばさん達がとても感じがよくて、色々お話をしました。
全部で1時間半くらい乗馬してるので、お尻が痛くなりましたが、途中、雨も降ったり、川の中を歩いたり、馬たちが草を食べるのでなかなかコントロールが難しかったです。
途中、私は前の馬と近づき過ぎて、私の馬が暴走しそうになり、少しヒヤッとしました。
心配な方は旅行保険に入った方がいいかも知れません。馬は生き物なので、何があるかわかりませんので。
全体にはとても貴重な体験だと思います。日本で、あの大自然は見られません。
子供たちにすてきな思い出ができました

We went to Hawaii to celebrate my parents' 60th birthday. Since we were in Hawaii, I wanted to do something truly Hawaiian, so I signed up for this tour. Neither my parents nor I had any experience with horseback riding, and we were very worried before getting on the horses, but the moment I mounted the horse, all my anxiety disappeared, and I felt excited. For about an hour and a half, we enjoyed a leisurely ride, listening to the sound of the hooves and breathing in the fresh air of nature. My parents said that this horseback riding experience was the highlight of our time on the Big Island.

The tour was conducted entirely in English, so everyone except us were foreign participants. Even if you don't speak any Japanese, the guides communicate in broken Japanese, saying things like "stand" and "danger," so I don't think you need to worry too much.

Also, it takes about 25 minutes to travel from the meeting point to the riding area by wagon. I saw some comments mentioning that the travel time was long, but that's because we slowly descended the steepest slope in the U.S., and the guide explained the scenery we could see from the window, making it not boring at all; in fact, it was fresh, adventurous, and fun!

また、集合場所から馬乗り場まではワゴンで25分ほど移動します。移動時間が長いというコメントもお見かけしましたが、それは全米1の急斜面をゆっくり下るためと、ガイドが車窓から見える景色を説明してくれているからであって、全く退屈せず、むしろ新鮮でアドベンチャラスで楽しかったです！
日本語のツアーよりもお値ごろでしたし、大満足です！！

I couldn't do fast walking or running, so it felt a bit lacking for someone with riding experience. When I asked the staff on site, they told me that if I go towards Kohala, there are spacious fields where I can ride.

This is my second time (the first time I applied directly).
It's difficult to get there on your own, but we go all the way down to Waipi'o Valley.
The horses are well-trained, and you can enjoy horseback riding with a simple lecture.
(They walk on their own without you having to do anything. Haha.)
Since they are living creatures, they stop along the way to eat grass as they please,
and they also take bathroom breaks while walking (which is another memory).
We even crossed a river. It was swollen from the rain a few hours earlier, but the horses moved forward without hesitation.
They also take commemorative photos for you.

Please enjoy the lush green trees, flowers, and horses of Waipi'o.
If you visit the Big Island, I highly recommend it!

We participated as a family of four. Our family was the only group on the tour, and we had one female guide with us. After preparing the saddles, we received instructions on how to ride and handle the horses. Everything was in English, but as long as you closely follow the guide's movements, you'll be fine! The handling instructions were just four basic commands: "go," "stop," "right," and "left," so it wasn't difficult.

And finally, we set off! Along the way, we even challenged ourselves to a canter while climbing up the vast ranch towards the mountains, and when we looked back, the stunning view of the Kohala Coast came into sight. It was a wonderful view, and I'm sure you can enjoy a refreshing feeling.

All the horses are well-trained and safe, but each horse has its own personality. The horse I rode seemed to dislike mud and chose to walk on dry ground, even if it meant staying away from the other horses. In contrast, the horse my wife rode seemed to love water and splashed right into the puddles. While we experienced a bit of the difficulty in controlling the horses, it was a fun time. I highly recommend that everyone try this experience!

[Additional Note]
The wind from the mountains felt cold, so even if it's sunny, I think it's better to borrow a jacket. Also, the horses will walk through puddles and muddy areas, so your shoes might get wet or dirty, so it's advisable to borrow boots as well. Both are available for free.

どの馬もよく調教されていて危なくはありませんが、各々の馬に個性があります。私が乗った馬は「ぬかるみ」が嫌いらしく、他の馬から離れてでも乾いたところを選んで歩きました。と思えば妻が乗った馬は水に入るのが好きなようで水たまりにジャブジャブと入ります。思い通りに動かす難しさを少々味わいながらも楽しい時間でした。皆さんもぜひ体験してください！

山からの風は冷たく感じましたので晴れていてもジャケットは借りたほうがいいと思います。また、水たまりやぬかるんだところを馬が進みます。靴が濡れたり汚れたりすることもあるかもしれませんのでブーツも借りたほうがいいと思います。いずれも無料でお借りできます。

I participated in the morning session.
If you have a rental car with navigation, you can easily find the reception area.
I attended in November, but it got hot while riding, so water is essential.
If you can't get supplies at a supermarket, I recommend buying water at the shop at the reception area, which also sells it.
(I also recommend using the restroom here.)
You can borrow a helmet, but you can also bring your own hat.

Before riding, the English guide explained the basic movements.
Since it was in English, there were parts I didn't understand, but they explained the important points using some Japanese words as well.

"止まれ"のサインを馬がなかなか聞いてくれないこともありましたが、危ないときはガイドさんが止めてくれたので大丈夫でした。

大自然の中、馬に乗りながら写真を撮ることができたり、ガイドさんから生えている植物の説明を聞けたりして楽しかったです。
水の中をじゃぶじゃぶ馬が歩いていくのもなかなか面白いです。
(汚れてもいいズボンで行くといいですよ)

馬に乗るのは初めてでしたが、無事に乗ることができたのでとてもいい経験になりました。

英語が分かったら、馬の扱いの説明がよく分かるので乗馬への不安がもっと少なくなったと思いますし、乗馬中の植物の説明などもよく分かってもっと面白いだろうなと思います。

Waipi'o Valley was a wonderful place with a gentle atmosphere. You can easily reach the viewpoint by car, but the road down to the valley is off-limits for rental cars and is a narrow, bumpy, steep path that is best avoided if you're not experienced. It's advisable to know in advance where to pull over to avoid oncoming vehicles. Very few people walk down, and since there are no markers once you descend, I think it's better to go on a tour rather than trying to navigate on foot.

Initially, the staff will take you by car to the horse stable in the valley. There were 8 participants in the horseback riding tour, accompanied by 2 staff members. The instructions on how to ride were simple, mixed with broken Japanese, but the horses were all very smart and guided us along (laughs). Unlike in Japan, where someone typically leads the horse, each person is given a horse and can ride right away, even if it's their first time. It's so much fun!

When I considered booking beforehand, the Japanese tour was a full day, so I opted for this half-day option instead. Since it's a first experience, it requires quite a bit of stamina, so I think half a day is sufficient.

My first horseback riding experience! Even though my English is terrible, I had a great time.

First, they explained how to handle the horse. Of course, it was in English, but they also provided important points in broken Japanese, and with gestures, I was able to understand most of it.

Before we rode, they explained how to ride and safety precautions very slowly and clearly in English. I participated with my middle school daughter. Both of us lacked sufficient English skills, so there were many parts of the guide's explanations that we couldn't understand. They would answer our questions, but there wasn't much kindness or consideration shown. It was raining quite a bit, and it felt like we were just turning back on the same path, making the journey monotonous. The rain gear they provided was excellent, and we didn't get wet at all in the covered areas. I wonder if it would have felt nice if it had been sunny.

I participated in the morning session. It took about an hour and a half from Kona to reach the meeting place. We drove to the stable in the canyon and chose our horses. The instructions were 100% in English, so I had to pick up on the reins and precautions somewhat intuitively (laughs). The horses are well-trained, and the instructors are positioned at the front and back of the line, so I didn't feel particularly anxious. However, some horses would stop to eat grass or drink water and act freely, so I think it's important to take the lead.

By the way, what I found personally helpful to bring was a windbreaker. Depending on the timing (late April), I was caught in a sudden downpour that required an umbrella for about 10 minutes during the ride. I was unsure if it would be a nuisance, but I tied it around my waist and was able to quickly put it on while on the horse to shield myself from the rain, which turned out to be a great decision! They might provide raincoats if it rains from the start, but if it starts raining during the ride, each person will need to handle it on their own! Everyone was using insect repellent spray as well.

The instructors were all kind, explaining plants along the way and taking photos, which made for great memories. It's not often you get the chance to ride through such magnificent nature, and I'm glad I participated. I would love to do it again if I come back to the Big Island. Lastly, after horseback riding, I had a malasada at Tex Drive In near Honokaa, which I also recommend.

馬はよく調教されてますしインストラクターの方が隊列の前後にいるので特に不安は感じませんが、馬によっては止まって草を食べたり水を飲んだり好き勝手に行動するので主導権を握る事が大事だと思います。
　ちなみに個人的に持って行って役立ったのがウインドブレーカーでした。
時期(4月末)によるのかもしれませんが、乗馬の最中に10分程普通に傘がいるレベルの通り雨に降られました。邪魔になるかな？と思いつつ腰に巻いていきましたが馬上でさっと羽織って雨をしのぐことができて大正解でした！
最初から雨の時はカッパをかしてくれる？かもしれませんが、途中で降った場合は各自で対応になります！
後は虫よけスプレーをみんな使っていました。
　インストラクターの方はみんな親切で途中で植物の説明をしてくれたり、写真を撮ってくれていい思い出になりましたし、雄大な自然の中を馬で散歩できる機会なんてそうそうないし参加して良かったです。
またハワイ島に来たらやってみたいです。
最後に、乗馬の後はホノカア近くのテックスドライブインでマラサダを食べましたがこちらもオススメです。

慣れてくると他の馬に近づき過ぎないようにコントロール出来るようになったりするので可愛く思えてきます。渓谷の清々しさと初めての乗馬はハラハラしつつ楽しかったです。次はもっと上手く乗れるはず。時間はけっこう長く感じました。少しお尻が痛くなり、終わった後は足もプルプルしました。手を離す余裕がなく途中で水を飲むことは私はありませんでした。写真も首にかけたカメラで片手で適当に撮る感じでした。一度ガイドさんが撮ってくれましたが。
