The reason for meeting on-site was that it overlapped with other options we considered. The navigation system we borrowed kept saying to turn left onto a narrow forest road after entering Waipio! It looked like a path overgrown with grass. Since I had gone another route before, I ignored it and went through the town to the valley. (On the way back, it also instructed a right turn onto a suspicious forest road.) After that, once we got closer to the valley, we followed the signs and turned right to reach Artworks. Please be careful not to be misled by the navigation. The reception starts at 9 AM, so if you arrive early, there won't be any staff around, just the shopkeepers. There is road construction on the way here, causing traffic jams, but in the afternoon, it might take 10 to 15 minutes longer than in the morning (the worst is in the evening). They mentioned the construction would last for two years. It's not too serious, so there's no need to rush.

The horses had various personalities, which was interesting. Sometimes the English was fast, making it hard to catch everything, but we managed. The explanations were natural, especially about the trees, but they weren't very detailed, so I wondered if it would be more enjoyable with a Japanese guide, as my daughter, who is nearly native-level, remarked. Along the way, we crossed a small stream and encountered wild horses, making for a relaxed horseback riding experience. There's no need to worry. Just keep in mind that since you'll be on the horse for a long time, those with weak hips might find it uncomfortable later. Also, the helmet we borrowed could really use some Febreze! (laughs) Since it's a nature-filled activity, it's understandable. (laughs) Bring only the bare essentials. Also, it's better to avoid wearing new sneakers. We enjoyed a recommended lunch on the way back, making good use of our time.

現地集合にした理由は他のオプションで立ち寄ったところとかぶってしまうのでこれにしました。うちでお借りしたナビがワイピオに入ってから狭い林道に左折と言うのです！どう見ても草ぼうぼうで道？と言う感じ。一度別のオプションで行ったことがあるので、無視して町の中を通って渓谷へ行きました。（帰りも怪しい林道へ右折と指示）あとは渓谷近くなってから標識に従い右折していくとアートワークスへ行けました。皆さんはナビに惑わされないように進んでください。受付は９時からですので前についても係りの人がおらず、お店の方だけでした。ここヘ行く途中道路工事で渋滞していますが、午前よりは午後が１０から１５分かかるときがあります（ひどいのは夕方ですが）。工事は２年と言っていました。あまり大したことがないのであせらないでくだいね。
馬もいろいろな性格があって面白かったです。英語がはやくて聞き取れないこともありましたが、なんとかなりました。説明は自然、とりわけ樹木とかですが大した説明でないので、日本語ガイドさんだったらもっと楽しいのかな。とネイティブ並みの娘が呟いておりました。途中小川を横断したり野生の馬に出会ったり、のんびりした感じの乗馬です。心配はいりません。ただ馬にまたがるので、股関節が弱い方は長い時間なのであとでお辛くなるかな。それから、お借りしたヘルメットがファブリーズしてー！と言いたくなるほど。（泣）自然満喫アクティビティなんだから仕方ないですね。（笑）荷物は本当に最小限に。また運動靴は新しいのは避けたほうがいいですね。帰りにお勧めランチをしながら帰りました。時間を有効に使えて楽しかったです。

I participated in May, and the weather was great, making it a lot of fun. The horses were a bit young and sometimes didn’t listen, but it wasn't a problem; if I pulled the reins a bit harder, they would respond. The puppies walking alongside the horses were adorable, and all the participants enjoyed themselves. Riding was fun too, but getting to the horses involved a steep slope, and we went down a cliff with four horses, which was thrilling.

Had a great time both the guides were wonderful. The only issues I had were that you don’t really get close to the waterfalls they are way off in the distance and while the guides were very knowledgeable about the area you couldn’t really hear what they were saying unless you were in the front or back of the line. Other then that we enjoyed everything else

The ride was awesome, the guides were energetic and super friendly, I felt so incredibly welcome, like family The scenery was GORGEOUS and the horses we're amazing!! I'd spend the money again in a heartbeat They matched all of us to horses according to our skill level, so that even I didn't feel like I was just on a pony ride (I've been on horseback many many times) We even got to see the resident heard of wild horses! Best afternoon spent in a LONG time

I was a bit anxious about getting to the meeting place by rental car, but with Google Maps, it was fine. Some people arrived a little late, but we waited cheerfully while chatting with the guide and everyone else. Before the tour started, we enjoyed eating naturally grown bananas and macadamia nuts while chatting. I don't speak English particularly well, but the horses are smart, so I had no worries. The guide was also a bright and fun person, making it the best memory of my trip.

少し遅れて来た方もいらっしゃいましたが、ガイドさんやみんなで和やかにお喋りしながら待ちました。

This time, my sister and her husband were visiting the Big Island for the first time, so I had them experience this tour that I repeat every time. (I couldn't participate due to a neck injury...) My sister and her husband were very satisfied and returned with excitement. They mentioned they would definitely do it again next time.

This was my first time horseback riding. We drove down to the Waipi'o Valley from the meeting point in a car driven by our guide, received a horseback riding lecture, and the guide selected horses that suited each of us. From there, we rode on our own.

At first, I was anxious, but the horses are well-trained, so while there were a few minor scuffles between them, they didn't act out in any significant way. This activity allows you to enjoy the scenery and horseback riding at a walking pace, so if you're looking to gallop, you might find it lacking.

The guide uses Japanese for words like "danger" and "single file," but explanations about the scenery and plants are in English, so if you prefer those explanations in Japanese, I recommend looking for another company.

I was able to see some precious landscapes, so I would love to participate in this activity again the next time I visit the Big Island.

This was my second horseback riding experience on the Big Island, and I really wanted to go to Waipi'o Valley, so I joined my husband. I have some riding experience, so I had no problem with that, but there were eight people max, and everyone except us was from Europe or America. It was disappointing that I couldn't understand the guide's explanations about the plants. We had fun crossing streams and taking pictures in the valley's scenery. Crossing the river was thrilling, but we only walked the whole time. There was no fast walking or trotting. For that kind of riding, it seems better to go to a ranch. If you want to go to Waipi'o Valley on your own, it looks like the only option is to walk down a steep slope like the ones in Hakone, so I recommend joining a tour.

２回目のハワイ島での乗馬、どうしてもワイピオ渓谷に行きたくて夫と参加しました。私は乗馬の経験があるので乗ること自体は問題ないのですが、人数も8人Maxで私たち以外は欧米の方、ガイドの方が植物の説明などしてくださるのが全く分からず残念でした。渓流の中を渡ったり、渓谷の景色の中写真を撮ってくださったり、楽しかったです。川を渡るのはドキドキしましたが、終始歩くのみ。速足、駆足はありません。そういう乗馬は牧場のほうがよさそうです。自分でワイピオ渓谷に行くには、箱根の山のもっと傾斜のきつい坂を歩いて下っていくしかなさそうなので、ツアーの参加がおすすめです。

We went as a family of four with our two high school daughters. We chose this tour because it was a bit cheaper than the Japanese guide, but everyone else in the group was foreign and spoke fast English. However, the couple guiding us, Shiso and Tracy, were very attentive and engaged with us, mixing in a little Japanese to explain the horseback riding instructions. Our daughters had no problems and enjoyed horseback riding. It was a great experience to explore the Waipi'o Valley on horseback, something we wouldn't have been able to do on our own.

It's like a jungle! What an amazing first impression. You can slowly enjoy the magnificent nature of Waipi'o while being gently rocked on a horse. It was my first time horseback riding, but the horse was smart and guided me on its own, so I felt safe. It was truly a unique place on the Big Island of Hawaii. That's a sight you have to experience in person. If you want to experience nature and cleanse your spirit, I highly recommend you go!

My 9-year-old daughter is learning horseback riding, and we wanted to let her experience it in nature, so our family of four participated.

On the day of the event, we drove there with a rental car and were able to find the meeting point easily using Google Maps. After signing a liability waiver and a short bathroom break, we set off.

We went down to the valley in a large 4WD vehicle, which was really thrilling and fun! There was a Japanese guide from another tour with us, and it was great to hear the explanations together. The guide talked about the plants around us, but since there were about ten of us in a line, there were times when it was hard to hear the guide's voice. A friendly dog that was close to the horses also joined us, which was very cute.

The ladies at the small souvenir shop at the meeting point were very nice, and we chatted with them a bit. We rode for about an hour and a half, which made our backsides sore, but we also experienced some rain, walked through a river, and it was quite challenging to control the horses as they kept eating grass.

At one point, I got too close to the horse in front of me, and my horse almost bolted, which was a bit scary. If you're worried, it might be a good idea to get travel insurance, as horses are living creatures and anything can happen.

Overall, I think it was a very valuable experience. You can't see that kind of nature in Japan. The children made wonderful memories.

回りに生えている植物について説明してくれましたが、総勢10人位で1列になって進むので、ガイドさんの声が聞き取りずらい時もありましたが。馬たちと仲良しの犬も付いてきて、とても可愛かったです。
集合場所にある小さいお土産屋さんのおばさん達がとても感じがよくて、色々お話をしました。
全部で1時間半くらい乗馬してるので、お尻が痛くなりましたが、途中、雨も降ったり、川の中を歩いたり、馬たちが草を食べるのでなかなかコントロールが難しかったです。
途中、私は前の馬と近づき過ぎて、私の馬が暴走しそうになり、少しヒヤッとしました。
心配な方は旅行保険に入った方がいいかも知れません。馬は生き物なので、何があるかわかりませんので。
全体にはとても貴重な体験だと思います。日本で、あの大自然は見られません。
子供たちにすてきな思い出ができました

We went to Hawaii to celebrate my parents' 60th birthday. Since we were in Hawaii, I wanted to do something truly Hawaiian, so I signed up for this tour. Neither my parents nor I had any experience with horseback riding, and we were very worried before getting on the horses, but the moment I mounted the horse, all my anxiety disappeared, and I felt excited. For about an hour and a half, we enjoyed a leisurely ride, listening to the sound of the hooves and breathing in the fresh air of nature. My parents said that this horseback riding experience was the highlight of our time on the Big Island.

The tour was conducted entirely in English, so everyone except us were foreign participants. Even if you don't speak any Japanese, the guides communicate in broken Japanese, saying things like "stand" and "danger," so I don't think you need to worry too much.

Also, it takes about 25 minutes to travel from the meeting point to the riding area by wagon. I saw some comments mentioning that the travel time was long, but that's because we slowly descended the steepest slope in the U.S., and the guide explained the scenery we could see from the window, making it not boring at all; in fact, it was fresh, adventurous, and fun!

It was also more affordable than Japanese tours, and I was very satisfied!

僕も両親も、乗馬の経験は皆無で、乗る前までは非常に心配していましたが、馬にまたがった瞬間、これまでの不安は消え去り、ワクワクした気持ちになりました。そこから約1時間半、のんびり馬にまたがりながら、蹄のコツコツという音と、大自然の新鮮な空気を吸いながら過ごす時間は最高のものでした。両親も、この乗馬がハワイ島で一番のハイライトだと言っていました。
ツアー自体は全て英語で行われるため、ぼくたち以外は皆外国人の参加者でした。全く日本語が出来なくても、カタコトの日本語で「立って」や、「あぶない」など言ってくれるので、そんなに心配は要らないと思います。
また、集合場所から馬乗り場まではワゴンで25分ほど移動します。移動時間が長いというコメントもお見かけしましたが、それは全米1の急斜面をゆっくり下るためと、ガイドが車窓から見える景色を説明してくれているからであって、全く退屈せず、むしろ新鮮でアドベンチャラスで楽しかったです！
日本語のツアーよりもお値ごろでしたし、大満足です！！

I couldn't do fast walking or running, so it felt a bit lacking for someone with riding experience. When I asked the staff on site, they told me that if I go towards Kohala, there are spacious fields where I can ride.

This is my second time (the first time I applied directly).
It's difficult to get there on your own, but we go all the way down to Waipi'o Valley.
The horses are well-trained, and you can enjoy horseback riding with a simple lecture.
(They walk on their own without you having to do anything. Haha.)
Since they are living creatures, they stop along the way to eat grass as they please,
and they also take bathroom breaks while walking (which is another memory).
We even crossed a river. It was swollen from the rain a few hours earlier, but the horses moved forward without hesitation.
They also take commemorative photos for you.

Please enjoy the lush green trees, flowers, and horses of Waipi'o.
If you visit the Big Island, I highly recommend it!

歩きながら大小トイレ（苦笑　それもまた思い出）
川も横断。数時間前の雨で増水していましたが馬も躊躇なく進みます。
記念撮影もしてくれます。

ワイピオの緑濃い木々草花とお馬さんに癒されて下さい。
ハワイ島に行った際は、ぜひ！お勧めです！

We participated as a family of four. Our family was the only group on the tour, and we had one female guide with us. After preparing the saddles, we received instructions on how to ride and handle the horses. Everything was in English, but as long as you closely follow the guide's movements, you'll be fine! The handling instructions were just four basic commands: "go," "stop," "right," and "left," so it wasn't difficult.

And finally, we set off! Along the way, we even challenged ourselves to a canter while climbing up the vast ranch towards the mountains, and when we looked back, the stunning view of the Kohala Coast came into sight. It was a wonderful view, and I'm sure you can enjoy a refreshing feeling.

All the horses are well-trained and safe, but each horse has its own personality. The horse I rode seemed to dislike mud and chose to walk on dry ground, even if it meant staying away from the other horses. In contrast, the horse my wife rode seemed to love water and splashed right into the puddles. While we experienced a bit of the difficulty in controlling the horses, it was a fun time. I highly recommend that everyone try this experience!

[Additional Note]
The wind from the mountains felt cold, so even if it's sunny, I think it's better to borrow a jacket. Also, the horses will walk through puddles and muddy areas, so your shoes might get wet or dirty, so it's advisable to borrow boots as well. Both are available for free.

そしていよいよ出発です。途中、駆け足にも挑戦しながら広大な牧場を山の方に向かってどんどん登っていき、振り返るとコハラコーストの絶景が目に飛び込んできました。素晴らしい眺めです。爽快な気分が味わえるはずです。
どの馬もよく調教されていて危なくはありませんが、各々の馬に個性があります。私が乗った馬は「ぬかるみ」が嫌いらしく、他の馬から離れてでも乾いたところを選んで歩きました。と思えば妻が乗った馬は水に入るのが好きなようで水たまりにジャブジャブと入ります。思い通りに動かす難しさを少々味わいながらも楽しい時間でした。皆さんもぜひ体験してください！

【追記】
山からの風は冷たく感じましたので晴れていてもジャケットは借りたほうがいいと思います。また、水たまりやぬかるんだところを馬が進みます。靴が濡れたり汚れたりすることもあるかもしれませんのでブーツも借りたほうがいいと思います。いずれも無料でお借りできます。

On December 30, we participated as a family of four. Two of us are children aged 9 and 11.
It was almost our first time riding horses, but the horses were well-trained, so we had no worries.
We took a walk in the valley floor of Waipi'o Valley, swaying on the backs of the horses. It was a place filled with rich water and greenery, exuding tranquility.

For your reference:
- We traveled to and from the valley floor by 4WD from the meeting point. This took quite a bit of time. The approximate schedule was: gather at 1:30 PM, move to the valley floor, start horseback riding at 2:15 PM, finish riding at 3:45 PM, and disperse at the meeting point at 4:15 PM.
- We were the only Japanese participants; everyone else was from the mainland United States.
- We planned to rent a car to get to the meeting point, but when we tried to make a reservation at the hotel after arriving on the Big Island, we were told there were no rental cars available until January 3.
We had no choice but to use a round-trip taxi, which cost over $400 from Kailua-Kona. We should have reserved a rental car from Japan.

・私たちはレンタカーを借りて集合場所まで行くつもりでしたが、ハワイ島へ着いてからホテルで予約しようとしたら、1月3日までハワイ島ではレンタカーが1台もないと言われました。
仕方なく往復タクシーを使い、カイルア・コナから400ドル強かかりました。
レンタカーは日本から予約して行くべきでした。

The horseback riding in the jungle at the bottom of the valley, which would be very difficult for us to visit on our own, was amazing. The horses were all very gentle and listened well. I participated in the morning session.
If you have a rental car with navigation, you can easily find the reception area.
I attended in November, but it got hot while riding, so water is essential.
If you can't get supplies at a supermarket, I recommend buying water at the shop at the reception area, which also sells it.
(I also recommend using the restroom here.)
You can borrow a helmet, but you can also bring your own hat.

Before riding, the English guide explained the basic movements.
Since it was in English, there were parts I didn't understand, but they explained the important points using some Japanese words as well.
During the ride, there were guides at the front and back of the line to lead the horses, so the horses rarely strayed off the course.
(I almost went off course because I miscommunicated with my horse...)
There were times when the horse didn't respond to the "stop" signal, but the guide stopped us when it was dangerous, so it was fine.

It was fun to take pictures while riding in the great outdoors and to hear explanations about the plants from the guide.
It was quite amusing to see the horse walking through the water.
(I recommend wearing pants that you don't mind getting dirty.)

It was my first time riding a horse, but I was able to do it safely, making it a very good experience.

受付場所は、ナビつきのレンタカーなら難なく辿り着けます。
11月の参加でしたが、馬に乗っている間に暑くなったので、水は必須です。
スーパーなどで調達できなければ、受付場所の売店にも販売があったので買うことをお勧めします。
(ここでトイレを済ませておくこともお勧めします。)
ヘルメットは借りれますが、自前で帽子を持っていくこともできます。

乗馬前に、英語ガイドさんから基本的な動作について説明がありました。
英語なので分からないところもありますが、重要なところは日本語の単語も交えて説明してもらえました。
乗馬中は列の先頭と最後尾にガイドさんがいて馬を誘導してくれるので、馬がコースを外れることはほぼありませんでした。
(私は馬へのサインを間違えてしまったので外れそうになりましたが。。)
"止まれ"のサインを馬がなかなか聞いてくれないこともありましたが、危ないときはガイドさんが止めてくれたので大丈夫でした。

大自然の中、馬に乗りながら写真を撮ることができたり、ガイドさんから生えている植物の説明を聞けたりして楽しかったです。
水の中をじゃぶじゃぶ馬が歩いていくのもなかなか面白いです。
(汚れてもいいズボンで行くといいですよ)

馬に乗るのは初めてでしたが、無事に乗ることができたのでとてもいい経験になりました。

英語が分かったら、馬の扱いの説明がよく分かるので乗馬への不安がもっと少なくなったと思いますし、乗馬中の植物の説明などもよく分かってもっと面白いだろうなと思います。
不安な方は日本語のプランのほうがいいかもしれません。

The meeting place is at the souvenir shop, which also sells drinks, snacks, and ice cream. You can also use the clean restrooms. However, the helmet smelled, so I wore it over my hat.
