I had heard from my parents about their trip to see the lava before I was born, and I was really looking forward to this helicopter tour. The weather in Waikoloa was great, but there were a lot of clouds in the direction of Mauna Kea, which made me a bit anxious. Unfortunately, my worries came true, and due to bad weather, the tour to see the lava in Hilo was canceled. I was extremely sad, but I felt relieved knowing that the staff prioritized safety. The Japanese pilot mentioned that Waipi'o Valley is also wonderful, and that it was okay to cancel. He even said that they would refund the entire tour fee, so I asked my parents if we could go on the tour just to Waipi'o Valley. I had been on a helicopter in Japan before, but when we took off and flew over the vast land of the Big Island, I was moved by its grandeur. There were a few clouds and it rained a bit along the way, but flying over Waipi'o Valley felt like entering a completely different world, almost like a dream. I saw many waterfalls flowing between the valleys, and I wanted to drink from them. It was a little scary flying through the valley, but even at 12 years old, I was able to experience a lot of emotions.

It was great. As soon as we got out to the ocean, we spotted a mother and a baby whale. We were there for a couple of hours, and we probably saw 5, 6 whales. The staff and the captain did a great job catering all the guests (maybe about 30 of them on board). The naturalist explained a lot about the humpback whales, and it was very educational.
I'd highly recommend this one. It's very family friendly also, and the little kids were very excited to see the real whales in the ocean.

I expected this trip would be a magical chance to get to stand "on top of the world" and watch the sunset and see the stars. It was indeed spectacular. The stargazing portion was really geared towards people who are absolute astronomy beginners, so if youre an amateur astronomer you'll be a little disappointed that you don't get to see more. But the guides were great the whole time giving a great history of the Big Island ranging from botany to politics to Volcano development. Don't expect a very lively time, if you're there as an individual it's a quiet, lonely world up there. but would be great as an adventurous couple to see something totally out of the ordinary.

Canoe surfing was a lot of fun! It is like surfing on a canoe. Our 4 yo and 6 yo kids loved it, too. It does take a lot of effort on the adults part so be prepared to paddle. Our guide was excellet. We had some great conversation while waiting for each set to roll in. It was definitely worth the price for this experience. We did show up when originally scheduled, but the waves weren't big enough so they promised to call us when it would be better to come out. As promised they called us the next morning (they offered a whale watch if the waves weren't good enough before we had to leave). We were glad we re-arranged our schedule to do this. We will probably do it again when we go back.

"Hawaii Activities" could have done a much better job at communicating with us and Ocean Sports about where to meet. We were told to meet in the lobby of the Marriott for a shuttle... The shuttle never came and we had to do all the leg work to find out that we could have simply went out to the Ocean Sports hut right out on the beach in front of the Marriott. Since the ocean entry of lava is currently unavailable, I opted for a helicopter tour. I was worried because it had been cloudy until the day before, but we were blessed with clear skies and were able to see breathtaking views. There were past craters scattered around, allowing us to witness the remnants of previous lava flows and observe how lava changes over time. The contrast between dry and rainy areas was also visible, giving us a sense of nature's dynamism. We could see roads cut off by lava flows, lava within the currently active Puʻu ʻŌʻō crater (which was a bit far away, and I wished we could get a little closer), and people walking towards the ocean entry. It was a comprehensive view of everything related to lava.
I took a lot of photos, but I was surprised at how different the intensity of the actual experience was compared to the pictures when I looked at them later. It was an impressive flight, and I would love to fly again by helicopter when lava activity becomes more active. The people who picked us up, the helicopter mechanics, the reception staff, and the pilot were all very kind, making it a truly enjoyable flight.

I wanted to see the flowing lava into the ocean, so I joined a helicopter tour. Since the explanation was in English, I didn't fully understand the details, but looking down at the Big Island from the helicopter was fascinating; it was just like the geography I studied in school, showing the natural landscape as it is.
However, the volcano we aimed for wasn't very active, and we only saw a few spots where the lava was slowly flowing. From above, it was hard to tell if it was actually moving. Currently, the lava is described as "sleepy." There were no signs of lava erupting or falling into the ocean. While there was some hot lava, since it was a morning flight, we could only see a few areas glowing red, which might look different at night. I booked this about two months ago, so the condition of the volcano largely depends on luck. Given the current situation, I think a hiking and stargazing tour would allow for a closer view of the flowing lava. It might be a good idea to check the volcano's status before deciding on a tour.
That said, helicopters can’t fly due to weather conditions, and in the past two instances with other tour companies, my flights were canceled because of the weather, so I was glad we were able to fly.

The Japanese tour was fully booked, so my family participated in this one. The tour guide spoke English at a relentless speed, so I couldn't understand the detailed explanations, but I was very satisfied to see the sunset above the sea of clouds and an unexpectedly beautiful starry sky.
Many of the other participants were middle-aged individuals from the mainland United States, and everyone was very sociable, which made for an interesting experience in that sense.
There were meal options at a mountain lodge along the way, but I think everyone ended up eating chicken. At the top of the mountain, someone felt a bit unwell, but there were oxygen tanks available, so they recovered partway through. Since the travel was only by car, there was no physical activity at all.
During the stargazing, the explanations were thorough, but the cold really hit me. It's best to prepare as much warm clothing as possible. It might have been even better if I had studied the stars in advance. It was my first time seeing so many clear stars.

I believe that most of the Japanese participants in this tour were those who couldn't book a Japanese-language tour. I would like to share the details of the tour.
The tour began with participants being picked up in a large Land Cruiser, and the guide provided explanations through a microphone while driving. There were about 16 participants in total, and the vehicle was full. There was one young couple, but the rest were middle-aged couples from English-speaking countries. Among them, my spouse and I were the only Japanese. At the start of the tour, the guide introduced each participant, and we responded when our first names were called.
After about an hour, we stopped at a former ranch site for a break. There were portable toilets available. The main dishes, snacks, and drinks that we had selected during registration were distributed, and we enjoyed an early dinner around a table inside a tent. After that, we were handed bottled water and warm clothing (just jackets). We drove along a steep, bumpy road, enjoying views of the sea of clouds as we headed for the summit. We arrived at the top about an hour before sunset; it was drizzling below, but here it was beautifully clear. We visited the observatory from the outside, took photos, and watched the setting sun.
After it got dark, we moved to the mountainside, warmed up with the snacks and cocoa we were given, and finally began stargazing using lasers and telescopes. It was an hour of enjoying the starry sky and the Milky Way. Finally, we stopped at the Onizuka Visitor Center to use the restroom and buy souvenirs before heading home.
I had heard in advance that it would be quite cold, so I brought a lot of clothes, but it wasn't cold at all on the day of the tour. I think if you're going on a sunset tour from April to October, you don't need to worry too much about the cold. Also, no one in our tour group had any issues with altitude sickness. A flashlight was very helpful; each person should have one as a necessity.
The guide's English was fast-paced, almost like a DJ, making it difficult for us to catch everything. I believe there was an explanation of the overall schedule at the beginning of the tour, but I couldn't understand it. I managed to pick up on keywords and follow along with the group. For those taking an English tour, I think it would be helpful to study the English names of constellations and stars in advance to assist with comprehension.

I thought about getting a revenge tour, but I was informed that there wasn't much volcanic activity and the ocean entry couldn't be seen, so I decided to join the helicopter tour to see it from above. This time, there was a bit of light rain, and I could only see the moving lava with the naked eye to a limited extent. I was able to see trees being consumed by the lava and flames rising, as well as lava flowing down the cliffs like a thin waterfall. I plan to get revenge during a time of more active activity. However, it was enjoyable to see the town of Kalapana, which had been swallowed by lava in the past, with houses starting to be built again, and the beautifully planted macadamia nut farms. It seems that the seating is determined by weight at check-in, and luckily, I was seated next to the pilot. On the way back to the airport, everyone enjoyed chatting, but I regretted not studying English conversation more. There were participants from various countries.

For those with flexible schedules, I recommend making reservations as early as possible, and if the tour is canceled due to weather, it's good to have a backup date.
Now, the actual flight was amazing. Unfortunately, the volcano was in a state of calm, so I couldn't see the dynamic lava flows or ocean entry, but I could see lava from a hole in the ground!

We thank you for flying with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. We will pass the great review on to Justin and we look forward to getting an opportunity to take you on one of our other tours in the future.
