Thank you for the magnificent lava plains of the Big Island, the breathtaking views of the mountains in nature, and most of all, to Mr. Yamamoto and Mr. Kurt from Alan1.net for a wonderful time!
Mr. Yamamoto, I was truly impressed by the enjoyable conversations and knowledge shared from the time of pickup until we returned. Thank you for passionately explaining the names of various Hawaiian flowers and plants, the history of lava, and especially all the constellations spread across the night sky. I was amazed by the constellations that cannot be seen in Japan. I was also grateful for the thorough preparations, from meals to drinks and warm clothing.
Mr. Kurt, at the time of pickup, I thought you might be a bit serious, but once you started talking about Hawaiian history, I truly understood your love for Hawaii. As time went on, you gradually conveyed your kindness and humor! I thought she must be chasing after you. Thank you for the long drive. I felt the depth of kindness and thoughtfulness of the people of Hawaii. The B-class gourmet food was also very delicious! Thank you very much.

This time, I participated in the Mauna Kea Sunset & Stargazing tour.
The staff provided excellent service, and it was a lot of fun, but the literal sunset and starry sky were absolutely the best...
Watching the sunset sink into the sea of clouds far below, with Haleakalā and other landmarks in the distance, was breathtaking. After that, seeing the Earth's shadow on the opposite side and the countless stars visible from about 3,500 meters made me wonder where they had been hiding all this time.
It truly made me feel like a part of this planet, and I would definitely love to participate in this tour again if I have the chance.

One notable aspect of Masashi's tour is the abundance of warm clothing options tailored for those who are sensitive to the cold. While other tours seemed to only provide knee-length jackets, this tour also offered overalls with insulated pants, allowing us to lie on the ground during stargazing after sunset. That said, women who are particularly sensitive to the cold might feel more comfortable bringing their own thicker hoodies or lightweight down jackets. I also brought leg warmers. However, the gloves I borrowed were quite thin, and I wished they were a bit warmer.
Additionally, there was a service offering warm tea during stargazing, which was truly thoughtful. The explanation of the constellations was clear, using a laser pointer, and it made me realize that we, as Japanese, can only see a small part of the constellations. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Southern Cross, which I thought could only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere. The guide, Mr. Yama, who explained the constellations, was very entertaining, making it a tour filled with laughter.

On April 2nd, I participated with my family of four. It was the perfect day for stargazing, being the third day after the full moon. The clear sky without any clouds added to the excitement when we got off the bus; it was an indescribable feeling.
As the stars seemed to be falling around us, we received thorough explanations. My son had just finished his junior high school entrance exams, so he had retained a lot of knowledge about astronomy, making it a wonderful experience to connect theoretical knowledge with reality. We even got a good look at the rarely visible Cancer constellation.
We confirmed Saturn through the telescope, but it appeared small; the one we saw at the planetarium in Tokyo was larger (perhaps due to the telescope's precision???).
The sunset at Mauna Kea before that was also stunning, with oranges reflected in the clouds and the indescribable colors of the sun's afterimage... everything was wonderful. Additionally, our guide, O, provided a wealth of knowledge backed by data, and his modest yet friendly demeanor made for a truly great tour.
With all these three elements combined, it became an unforgettable Mauna Kea tour for us.
One disappointing aspect was that we had to wait 20 minutes during the tour pickup. This was not the guide's fault, but rather due to some participants not keeping time. Since it was a group activity and we were participating online, unexpected delays can cause anxiety. I encourage those who will participate in the future to keep time so that everyone can enjoy the experience comfortably.

I definitely think you should participate in the Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing tour. This tour allows you to observe the stars from a higher location than the Onizuka Center, so you can enjoy it without being with other tour guests, and you can clearly see the Milky Way, which I highly recommend.
Since we stayed at a B&B, we were supposed to be picked up at a designated supermarket, and after the tour, we were supposed to be the first ones dropped off. However, the guide mistakenly went to the hotel first, which delayed our return home by 30 minutes. I believe the other participants who were dropped off after us were delayed by over an hour.
We had been sightseeing around the island with a rental car before the tour, so I regretted not speaking up earlier when I noticed something was off. The tour itself was enjoyable, so it's unfortunate. The bento box with Japanese food and miso soup was delightful. It was also helpful that they provided pants for warmth, as we were the only ones with them. I'm glad I participated since you can't go to Mauna Kea on your own.

This was my first time participating and I went alone. Before going, I was a bit anxious about attending by myself, but the guide, Mr. Yamamoto, was very entertaining, and the tour was fantastic! On the day of the tour, the rainbow was stunning, and since the stargazing was conducted at a location conveniently close to the summit, there were no clouds obscuring the stars at all. Mr. Yamamoto's knowledge about Hawaii is incredible! (By the way, he mentioned that people observing at the Onitsuka Center that day couldn't see well due to the clouds.) The sunset at the summit was different from other tours, as they provided us with warm clothing, gloves, and knit hats, which made me very satisfied. Next time, I definitely want to join this tour with friends and family.

If you're going to the Big Island, I definitely recommend visiting Mauna Kea. While Kilauea and the lava are impressive, the experience of watching the sunset and stargazing from the summit of Mauna Kea is truly moving. Seeing the sunset sink into the sea of clouds gives you chills. You can even see the shadow of the Earth. During stargazing, you can see an incredible number of stars like never before. They explain about artificial satellites, shooting stars, and your own constellations. If possible, it's good to check the moon phase before you go. It seems that a full moon can reduce visibility. You can find out the moon phase here: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/qpon/b/java103.htm. The bento from Masashi Nature School is just as good as other companies' bento, and they even include miso soup. Also, they are the only ones that provide warm clothing all the way down to pants. Other people looked cold. I definitely want to participate again next time.

The weather was surprisingly good for this time of year, and the temperature wasn't too low, allowing for great observations.
Recommendations:
- Dress warmly. They do provide outerwear, but it can still get cold after a long time, so it's best to go fully prepared, including a hat.
- Don't forget to bring water and some sweet snacks like chocolate. While water is provided, I think it's a good idea to bring your own as well.
I would love to participate again if I have the chance.

This was my first visit to the Big Island for our honeymoon. My husband, who usually doesn't have many requests for trips, had one wish: he wanted to visit the mountain with the observatory if we were going to Hawaii! To fulfill that wish, I booked the Mauna Kea summit tour with Masashi.
As a result, my husband was extremely satisfied! Although he usually doesn't talk much, on the way back, he was sitting next to the guide and chatting away, which made me happy to see how much he enjoyed it. I believe this was all thanks to the guide, who took great care of the participants' health and provided warm clothing. Thank you very much!!!
The sunset at the summit and the stargazing a little further down were perfect for honeymooners, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
I had done my homework by reading experience reports (I wore Heattech and brought a fleece and scarf), so we were able to fully enjoy both activities. If you want to make the most of this tour, it's best to dress appropriately.
Dinner was around 4:30 PM, and we returned to the hotel around 9:30 to 10 PM, so I recommend preparing a light snack the day before.
Stargazing can vary depending on the season, time, and moon phase, so this is a tour I would love to visit again multiple times. Thank you!

I had participated in a stargazing tour before, but there wasn't a place that took photos of the moon or pictures with the starry sky as a backdrop. The staff's service was also very good, and I would like to participate again. Thank you very much.

Since it was an English tour, I could only understand about 50% of the guide's talk with my English skills, but it was still a starry sky worth seeing. It was the first time I had ever seen the Milky Way so clearly and vividly. I expected it to be very cold, and I heard that the only warm gear they provide is a hooded jacket and gloves, so I was glad I brought my own lower body warm clothing. I think it would be too cold for Japanese participants if they joined in jeans or similar attire. (People from Western countries tend to dress lightly, right...?) I wish I had brought a scarf as well.
As for the tour itself, they take you to the summit by car, and they use a laser pointer to explain the stars, so if you have a basic understanding of English and your goal is to see the stars at the summit, I think you can enjoy it fully. By the way, despite it being a major holiday in Japan in September, out of about 30 participants in two cars, my friend and I were the only Japanese people. There was a Japanese version of the initial waiver form, but everything else was conducted in English.

I participated in the tour on September 15. We were blessed with great weather and saw the most amazing sunset and starry sky. While there seem to be many tours that watch the sunset from the mountaintop and do stargazing at the Ojizuka Visitor Center, we were lucky to observe from a height similar to the summit of Mount Fuji. If you ask the guide, Shinya, he can take a wonderful photo with the starry sky as a backdrop for $15. I heard some people even captured shooting stars. It makes for a great memory!

I was overwhelmed by the guide's passion!
I was especially impressed by how energetically they guided us throughout the long tour, from the gathering point to our late return.
I had been to Oahu before, but I was thrilled to finally visit the Big Island. The scenery of solidified lava flows was everywhere, and it felt like a different world.
It felt far to Mauna Kea, but I realized they intentionally took their time to reach the summit. The view from the top is worth seeing. The scenery from such a high elevation, even higher than Mount Fuji, is something you don't get to see often.
For my wife and me, who live in Tokyo, the starry sky near the summit was incredibly beautiful, unlike anything we had ever seen, making it the best day ever.
But this was all thanks to the guide. Mahalo!

I participated on September 17.
It was my first time, and I was terrified of altitude sickness, but I made it to the summit without being attacked by sleepiness.
It was indeed cold at the top. However, the mountain view was like a fantastical scene, as if I had become a hermit.
I kept saying, "Wow," and felt a bit ashamed of my limited vocabulary...
After that, we descended a bit and did some stargazing.
It was like the stars were falling. My neck hurt.
I realized I could see the Milky Way, and again felt a bit ashamed of my lack of knowledge...
But I was able to spot shooting stars, it wasn't cold at all, and I could see the whole city of Hiro, so I'm really glad I came.
Thank you very much, Shinya.
This tour made me realize that my worries are so small.
