Our annual family trip to Hawaii. This time, we participated as a couple. Horseback riding is a regular optional activity in Hawaii. This time, we used Naalapa Staples for the first time. Usually, horseback riding gives the impression of well-behaved horses lined up quietly, but this course was interesting!! Not only did we cross a gently flowing river, but we also splashed through water deep enough to soak the horses' bellies, making us exclaim, "We're going through here!?" Along the way, we encountered wild horses, and our guide even decorated our hair with flowers, making it thrilling and very enjoyable. The ranch dogs accompanying us on the tour were also incredibly adorable.

The horses were very well kept, and decent training. Wrangler gave very good riding instructions (we are both experienced riders & recognized this). The valley is beautiful, but this ride basically just followed the road, so not the "trail ride" experience we were hoping for since were dodging vehicles (not lots, but it would have been nice to be off the road & in the woods).

Beautiful nature

The horseback riding tour was great. You'll see beautiful nature but don't expect a "real" horseback riding tour. Although they ask you about your horseback riding experience, they mixes all experience levels. 12 year old girls who have ridden only once in their life joined our tour. So the ride itself was a bit boring but the Waipio Valley was beautiful.

This was my 4th adventure with Waipio on Horseback, and as always, the guides / handlers and the horses were the best! Despite the frequent rains in Waipio Valley, the horses are in wonderful condition and well matched by the guides based on the skill of the rider from novice through advanced rider. The horses and the valley make for a great adventure and enjoyment in a very special environment.

Last year, I participated in a horseback riding tour that went up Waipi'o Valley, so this year I joined a tour that explored the valley below, and the lower course was definitely more fun!
In particular, crossing a river that was about waist-deep on the horse, with my feet lifted up in the stirrups, was truly thrilling and enjoyable.
I have a British-style riding license, but I found Western riding to be very enjoyable as well.
The staff brought a lot of organic fruits like avocados and starfruit to share with us.
The horses were well-trained, so I felt safe while riding.
They were all very well-behaved horses.
I highly recommend it!!

去年はワイピオ渓谷を登っていく乗馬ツアーに参加したので、今年は渓谷の下を散策するツアーに参加しましたが、下のコースの方が断然楽しいです！
特に、馬の腰ぐらいまである深さの川を、足を鐙ごと上にあげて川を渡ったのは本当にスリリングで楽しかったです。
ブリティッシュスタイルのライセンスを持っている私ですが、ウエスタン乗りも非常に楽しかったです。
スタッフがアボガドやスターフルーツなどオーガニックフルーツをたくさん採ってきて振舞ってくれます。
お馬も良く調教されてるから、安心してライディングできました。
おりこうなお馬ばかりでした。
とてもおススメです！！

My daughter and I really enjoyed horseback riding through Waipio Valley. Just be warned that if it is the dry sesson, you won't see any waterfalls. We did see lots of water though in addition to taro fields, wild horses and plenty of beautiful scenery. Our guides, Dava and Robert were entertaining, yet professional. I highly recommend this tour, as many people try to hike down into the valley and don't get far. Then they have to walk back up that very steep road! One warning. Do wear long pants or some sort of insect repellant. We were told there were no mosquitos but my daughter and I both returned with lots of bites.

Stunning beauty and fascinating cultural legacy! We had been before with another company. Both were equally as great, but we didn't book ahead this time. Online-no luck...but when I called the 800 number, Reid Oshiro w Veltra helped with concierge service. Booked my party of 10, emailed and phoned me to confirm, etc. Reid, you were our hero of our week on Hawaii! Before or after your HB trip have lunch at the local pizza place in Waipio and shop the couple of nick-nack shops. Ten mins from trails. Really great food! Nice day!

This was my third horseback riding experience in Hawaii. The afternoon reservations were fully booked, so I joined the morning tour. It took exactly two hours to get there from South Kona. I think it would take about an hour from the Waikoloa resort area as well.

We took a van from the meeting point down to the stables. I happened to sit near the sliding door, and since it was open while we were driving, I was able to see the beautiful coastline and waterfalls.

The horse I rode kept stopping multiple times, which made me a bit anxious at the back, but I think even beginners would have no problem riding. I didn't experience any pain in my backside, but towards the end, my knees started to hurt a little, which was tough.

We were able to take photos with the valley in the background. It was my first time entering the river, and I was excited. Perhaps because the water level was high that day, my shoes and even the cuffs of my pants got wet.

They provided a bag to hook onto the saddle for small items like water bottles. I brought my camera and valuables hanging around my neck. I couldn't catch most of the English explanations, so if I had studied the history beforehand, it might have made the experience more profound as a sacred place.

途中で渓谷をバックに写真を撮ってもらえます。川の中に入るのは初めての体験だったのでワクワクしました。この日は水量が多かったのか、靴はもちろんズボンの裾まで濡れました。
ペットボトルなどの小物は鞍にひっかけるバッグを貸してもらえます。私はカメラと貴重品を首から下げて行きました。
英語の説明はほとんど聞き取れなかったので、前もって歴史を勉強して行くと神聖な場所としてもっと感慨深いものになったかもしれません。

The tour we booked had only our group of Japanese participants. The rest were all from Europe and America. The guide spoke English, but also communicated a few words in Japanese. My husband, who was riding a horse for the first time, was initially scared but gradually got used to it and enjoyed himself. We crossed a river up to our knees on horseback, which is an experience you definitely can't have in Japan. 2.5 hours was just enough. However, there were safety instructions in Japanese at the waiting area after the horseback riding, so I thought it would have been more reassuring if they had explained that to us since we don't speak English.

It was my first time riding a horse, but all the horses were very well-trained, so I felt comfortable. On the day we participated, everyone else was from the mainland. The tour is basically in English, but it's not at a difficult level, so even with a middle school level of English, you can communicate just fine. Occasionally, they also provide important points in Japanese, so I think you can participate without any issues even if your English is not great. You can absorb the unique charm of the Big Island that you can only experience here, so there's plenty of enjoyment and healing that only those who go can taste!

However, they were very friendly and kind. The reception is at the counter of a gift shop, which makes it a bit confusing, and since it also serves as a meeting point for other tours, it can get chaotic during the gathering. We participated as a family of three with our 9-year-old son. There were also 7 other Japanese people (a total of 10) and 3 Americans. We enjoyed long horseback riding while taking in the magnificent nature, and I felt the cost performance was very good. I was surprised at how well-trained the horses were. It was heartwarming to have cute dogs accompany us along the way. My son and I are members of a riding club in Japan, but riding in Western style, such as using leather stirrups and operating the reins with one hand, was refreshing and fun. We got to see valleys and waterfalls up close, and we even crossed a deeper river while riding, which was full of the charm of trekking! My husband is a beginner at horseback riding, but he thoroughly enjoyed it without any issues. We definitely want to participate again.

I participated on the morning of October 16. The weather was nice, and I leisurely explored the valley while swaying on horseback.

I was worried about the language barrier since it was only in English, but there were no issues as they explained things with gestures. (I needed a bit more English for check-in than for riding the horse. Basically, it was fine to just hand over the voucher, but I think I was told something like "Go to the restroom" and "We'll leave at 9:30, so be around here.")

By the way, the meeting place was a very stylish shop with many wonderful items that you wouldn't find in the city. (There were lots of designer pieces.)

After descending a steep slope in a 4WD, we entered a quiet valley. I got on the horse from there, and although I was tense and stiff at first, I quickly got into the groove within five minutes. I was able to enjoy walking through the river where the horse's belly was submerged in water and leisurely taking in the scenery.

Although I couldn't communicate perfectly in English, the guide was cheerful and kind, explaining fruits along the way and taking pictures at the viewpoints, which I appreciated.

I think just bringing a camera is sufficient. There isn't much opportunity to drink water while riding. I also didn't need sunglasses since there was a nice amount of shade from the trees.

英語のみ、ということで心配でしたが身振り手振りで説明してくれたので問題なかったです。
（馬の乗り方より、チェックインのほうが少し英語が必要でした。基本的にバウチャーを渡すだけで大丈夫ですが「トイレに行っといて」と「9：30に出発するからそこらへんにいて」と言われたような気がします。）

ちなみに集合場所のお店はとてもおしゃれなお店で
街中で売っていないようなすてきなものがたくさんおいてありました。（デザイナーの作品とかがたくさんありました。）

四駆で急こう配の坂を降りると静かな渓谷の中になります。
そこから馬に乗りましたが、はじめは緊張してガチガチだったものの5分もすればすっかり調子づいてきて、馬のお腹が水につかる位の川の中を歩いたり、のんびり景色をながめたりして楽しむことができました。

英語なので上手な意思疎通はできませんでしたが、それでも途中果物の説明をしてくれたり、ビューポイントで写真をとってくれたりとガイドの方も陽気で親切にしてくださりよかったと思います。

持ち物はカメラだけで十分だと思います。
馬に乗っているときは水を飲む余裕はあまりないですので。
私はサングラスも不要でした。ほどよく木陰がありましたので。

I participated with my mother, who is over 60. The male instructor stayed close to my mother almost the entire time, which was somewhat reassuring, but my mother regretted trying horseback riding just a few minutes into it (laughs). However, by the time she got used to it, she had a bit of a smile, and on the way back, she said, "I'm glad I did it!"

There were about 10 people in our group, and we were the only Japanese. All the explanations were in English, but they shouted out the necessary Japanese, so I didn't find it too inconvenient.

As for the helmets, I thought everyone would wear them, but it turned out we were the only ones wearing them, and they were quite smelly, so personally, I think it would have been fine not to wear them. They really stank...

また、ヘルメットですが、みんなカブるのかと思いきや、私達しかカブっておらず、かなり汗臭かったので、個人的にはカブらなくてもよかったかなぁと思いました。ほんとに臭いです…
あと、乗馬した2日後にきた筋肉痛には、母は悶絶していました。
内容的にはけっこうハードなところもあるので、なんでも楽しみたいと思ってる方には最高に楽しめます。

This was our second time participating as a couple. For us ordinary folks, horseback riding seems like a dream, but it's quite normal in Hawaii.
I’m 59 years old, but I was called by name by the instructor, Yuji, who is much younger than me. At first, I felt a bit resistant, but the staff was very kind, and it made me feel like I was in America.
There’s a tour that costs nearly $100 to go down to Waipi'o Valley, but this horseback riding experience takes you down to Waipi'o Valley and includes riding for just over $80, which I think is quite reasonable. However, it’s a meet-up and disperse arrangement. We were the only Japanese there.
We got to ride for about two hours, and the view of Waipi'o's nature from horseback is absolutely wonderful. The perspective from the horse is quite high, a height I haven’t experienced much before. We walked through rough terrain and even deep water (up to the horse's knees), which was an incredible experience. It was thrilling, wondering if everything would be okay. My wife seemed very satisfied and had a great expression on her face. We plan to go again next year.
By the way, even if it's your first time riding, the horses are well-trained, so you can feel safe. I highly recommend this to everyone.

　今回は夫婦で2回目の参加です。私達庶民夫婦には乗馬なんか夢のような話ですが、ハワイでは普通に出来てしまいます。
　私は59歳ですがユウジ、ユウジと私よりもズーット若いインストラクターに名前で呼ばれていました。最初は抵抗あったのですが対応も親切でここはアメリカかと感じました。
　また、ワイピオ渓谷まで降りるのに100ドル近くかかるツアーがあるのですが、この乗馬はワイピオ渓谷まで降りてしかも乗馬をして80数ドルでかなり安いと思います。ただし、現地集合、解散です。日本人は私達だけでした。
　2時間ほどみっちり乗馬ができ、馬上から見るワイピオの自然は最高に素晴らしいです。馬の上からの目線はかなり高く、あまり体験したことがない高さです。悪路や川の中をかなり深いところまで（馬の膝あたり）馬で歩くのですが何ともすごい体験です。大丈夫かなとスリル満点です。妻もかなり満足そうでいい顔していました。また来年行くつもりです。
　ちなみに、乗馬は初めてでも馬がよく訓練されているので安心です。私は皆さんに是非お勧めします。

Hilarious guide that made it even more fun, outstanding scenery, horses not old nags, good riders......This ride comes highly recommended.....even got to see wild fruit trees. This is a one of a kind trip well worth the value! Definitely one of the best parts of my vacation! Don't forget to try the ice cream at the store where the trip starts when you get back....delicous.

We took our teenage grandsons on this ride and we all had a fantastic time! Beautiful scenery, exciting ride, and friendly, helpful staff made it all a thoroughly enjoyable activity. We highly recommend it!

You descend into the valley with the help of the tour staff's driving, but it's absolutely impossible without a four-wheel drive. It was definitely the right choice to rely on a tour rather than trying to go on your own.

The horseback riding experience was great, but even more appealing was the tour that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the valley.

I heard that the horse I rode was the most spirited one, and indeed, it suddenly trotted a few times during the ride, so I was glad I wore a helmet. Other people's horses had no issues at all, and even small children were riding alone.

The road to Waipi'o Valley also passed through charming rural towns, allowing us to have a very fulfilling time. Overall, the tour was quite rewarding.

渓谷にはツアースタッフの方の運転で降りますが、4駆でないと絶対無理です。個人で行こうとするよりもツアーを頼んで大正解でした。
乗馬という体験もよかったですが、それ以上に渓谷の自然の中に行けるツアーとして魅力的でした。

乗馬では、私が乗せていただいた馬は一番暴れん坊な馬だと聞いており、確かに道中何度か唐突に小走りとなったので、ヘルメットをしていてよかったと感じました。ほかの方の馬は何の問題もなく、小さな子も一人で乗っていましたよ。

ワイピオ渓谷に至るまでの道も田舎のかわいい街があり、とても充実した時間を過ごすことができました。ツアー全体として、やりごたえのあるものでした。

You can ride for a very long time. Everyone's butt hurt after 2 or 3 days. Unlike horses that know the way and proceed in order, they tend to go wherever they want, trying to eat leaves and fruits. It was quite challenging, but I'm glad I had the experience of handling the horse. You really need to listen carefully to the instructions given at the beginning.

Even with quite a bit of rain, the ride doesn't get canceled. They lend you raincoats, but some raincoats only cover the upper body, so my pants got completely soaked. The color from the saddle transferred onto my pants.

The guide says, "Let me borrow your camera!" and takes pictures for you.

I booked a half-day tour with Na'alapa Stables.

I had some anxiety since I had no experience with horseback riding, but I was able to ride without any problems.

The guide gave instructions in English, but they taught us horseback riding using simple words and gestures, so even beginners quickly got used to it.

Along the way, we enjoyed the breathtaking views of Waipi'o Valley, and the course was varied, including riding through the river.

Waipi'o Valley is worth seeing just for the views, but I highly recommend the horseback riding tour.

If there's one downside, it was that the meeting point was hard to find. We happened to stumble upon it. It would be better if it were easier to locate.

I was attracted to the course that crosses the river in the canyon and decided to participate. In the same group, there were American, Indian, Chinese, and two Japanese couples, all in their 20s to 30s.

From the meeting point, we took a car down a steep mountain road while overlooking the canyon, which was thrilling due to the narrowness of the road.

After signing the waiver at the horse area, we chose helmets (none of which were very clean, so it was better to choose quickly), and there was a 5 to 10-minute explanation about horseback riding. (Since my English skills are limited, I desperately gathered information from my husband. I was a bit worried if I couldn't get someone to interpret for me.)

We put the water we brought (which must be purchased at the meeting point as it is not sold at the stable) into a bag they provided (a pocket-like thing to hang on the horse's shoulder). Once you get on the horse, beginners won't have much leeway, so if you want to use a camera, it's recommended to hang it around your neck. By the way, make sure to use the restroom at the meeting point, as there won't be another opportunity until we return.

The horse I rode was a model student and always stayed close to the guide, so I could hear the guide's instructions. (However, it was very tough for me not to be able to respond to the guide due to my lack of English skills, haha.) The other horses were also generally well-trained and calm, so there shouldn't be any issues for those not used to horseback riding, but each horse has its own personality, such as those that stop to graze, those that want to go ahead, and those that try to take a different route, which adds to the fun of the tour.

We walked slowly along the mountain path, enjoying the plants and scenery for about two hours. The breeze was pleasant, making it a refreshing tour.

集合場所からは車にて、渓谷を見下ろしながら急な山道を降りて行くのだが、道幅も狭くなかなかスリリング。

馬のいる場所まで降りて誓約書にサインした後、ヘルメットを選び（どれもあまりキレイではなく出遅れずに早く選んだ方がいい感じ）、乗馬についての説明が5分~10分くらい。（私は英語力に乏しい為、必死で夫から情報収集。誰かに通訳してもらえない場合はちょっと心配。）

各自持参した水（集合場所では購入しておかなければ、馬小屋では売ってない）を、貸してくれる袋（馬の肩にかけるポケットのようなもの）に入れる。
また一度馬に乗ってしまうと初心者ではあまり余裕が無い為、もしカメラを使いたいなら首から下げておくのがおススメ。
ちなみにトイレも集合場所で済ませておきましょう。出発以降は戻ってくるまでないので。

私の乗った馬は優等生で、常にガイドの近くのポジションを取ってくれたため、ガイドの話が常に聞けた。（が、英語力がない為、ガイドに対して返答できないことが非常につらかった（笑）。）
他の馬たちも基本的にはよく訓練されていておとなしいので、乗馬に慣れていない人でも問題はないが、やはりそれぞれ個性があって、すぐに道草を食う馬、前に前に行く馬、違うルートに行こうとする馬などなど、どの馬に当たるかもこのツアーの楽しみか。

山の小道をゆっくり歩き、植物や景色を堪能しながら約2時間の行程。吹き抜ける風は気持ちよく爽やかさを感じられるツアーだった。

You will need a means of transportation, such as a rental car, to reach the tour meeting point. Since it was an English tour, I could hardly understand what the female instructor and guide was saying.

However, we enjoyed the descent to the bottom of Waipi'o Valley in a 4WD with a 25-degree slope (it's quite difficult to reach the bottom of Waipi'o unless you're in good shape). After selecting a horse and receiving a very simple explanation (which I didn't understand much of in English), we began our horseback riding.

We crossed a river that was knee-deep and enjoyed riding on paths that cars couldn't access. The horses are well-trained, so even as first-time riders, they walked on their own. Occasionally, they would playfully interact with other horses, which made them excited, but pulling on the reins calmed them down.

It was a satisfying tour with the deep nature of Waipi'o and the valuable horseback riding experience. I believe it would have been even more satisfying if participants were paired with friendly horses. During the ride, our horses were quite far apart, making it difficult for us to converse.

馬は調教されているので乗馬初体験の夫婦でも、馬が勝手に歩いてくれました。たまに他の馬にちょっかいを出し合ったりし、馬が興奮しますが手綱を引けば落ち着いてくれました。
ワイピオの深い自然と乗馬体験という貴重な経験で満足いくツアーでした。
馬の選定時に、同じ参加者同士に仲の良い馬を与えてもらえれば、もっと満足のいくものであったと思います。
乗馬中は、夫婦の乗った馬が離れていて、夫婦間の会話がほとんどできませんでした。

Great Ride thru Beautiful Valley

A van takes you down to the valley floor where you are introduced to your horses. The ride takes you thru beautiful vegetation (mangos, avacados, bananas, taro and amazing flowers). You cross thru streams and see waterfalls streaming down into the valley. The riding itself is not very exciting. The horses walk at a leisurely pace. However the views are so worth it!
